I’m moving and don’t have room for two cars, so I’m selling my GTI.
TLDR: Runs great, drives great, needs cosmetic work. Solid running car with no mechanical issues. KBB lists good condition at $3196 and fair condition at $2687, so I’m pricing it between that at $2800. Bought the car in 2023 with 133K, now at 146,xxxK, selling due to moving. The car is located in Oakland under a covered driveway, and I'm in SF, so we'd have to make an appt to see the car. Send an email with your phone # and I will get back to you.
2005, 5 speed manual, strong clutch, 146,xxx miles, everything works. Car is quick, handles great, gets close to 30mpg during highway trips, is easy to park, and is surprisingly roomy for its size. Front seats feel fantastic. Sunroof, original CD player, AC/heat work great, heated seats work great. The car runs great, but it’s not the prettiest. I was planning on keeping this car and fixing the cosmetics, but the move is forcing me to part ways with the car.
I’ve had the car for a little over two years and it’s great fun. The car is originally from Chicago, and the original owner sold it to a mechanic at Tomas Sport Tuning in Berkeley, a VW/Audi specialist. He replaced the timing belt, chipped the car, and generally took care of it while in his possession. Because the car is chipped, it’s a little quicker than a stock GTI, and it also sounds pretty cool too.
Since I bought it I have kept up the maintenance. I have a google folder file I can share with you that shows the work/money I’ve put into the car. I have parts for the car that I’ve been meaning to put in, but life happens, you run out of time, and now it’s time to sell. You will get all the parts that I have for the car.
The good:
Passed smog with flying colors
New oil pan! (146k)
Fresh Oil change (@146K)
Recent brake job front (pads) and rear (pads and rotors)
Just bleed the brakes too!
Newer Catalytic converter (replaced at 136,000, have the paperwork)
New rear shocks (within the last 5000 miles)
New front driver side wheel bearing/Hub/Knuckle (within the last 5000 miles)
Newer windshield (within the last 10,000 miles)
Swapped. out the cloth door/rear inserts for leather cards
Tires have good tread all around
Everything works
No check engine lights
Air and cabin filters replaced.
The bad:
The rear hatch lock doesn’t have a key. The original lock was broken and I got a replacement lock but the key doesn’t match and I don’t have the key. You can open it using the button on the fob or from inside the car, just not with a key.
Same with the glovebox. Replaced the glovebox with a used one but I don’t have the key, but it opens/closes just fine. (these are two common problems with these models)
The Ugly:
Rust on the rocker panels needs to be cut out. I bought new rocker panels and my plan was to cut out the rusty parts and weld in the new panels, but I never got around to it.
Driver’s seat fabric is coming undone from entering/exiting the car. I have put a patch over it.
Headliner needs to be replaced–it’s being held up with staples (hey, it works)
Dents on the passenger side door/side panel. The car was swiped while parked on the street :(
