Historically and arguably, this is the movie milestone that started it all. Tim Burton's Batman was the very first legit big budget motion picture that was able to successfully draw a dark reality live action comic book character onto the big screen - rendering an image that would re-set the mold and tone for a more realistic "flesh & blood" type of cinematic superhero. Up until this point, 1989 Batman's only rival was director Richard Donner's highly successful 1979 Superman movie. Although Superman was brilliant - a virtual straight lift from comic book pages to silver screen - being somewhat campy and comical put it out of Batman's league altogether. Burton's darker image of Batman made a huge worldwide mega blockbuster impact, creating a massive wave from which all comic book superhero movies (both DC & Marvel) have been riding for more than 30 years now - and will continue to do so, long into the future.
