1. Official Height Guidelines
Surly generally segments their trail bikes, including the Grappler, into five sizes (XS to XL) to accommodate the following height ranges:
Surly Bikes
XS: 4'8" to 5'4" (142 cm – 165 cm)
SM: 5'2" to 5'9" (158 cm – 175 cm)
MD: 5'5" to 6'0" (165 cm – 183 cm)
LG: 5'9" to 6'2" (175 cm – 188 cm)
XL: 6'1" and taller (185 cm+)
2. Check Your Standover Height
Before settling on a size, ensure you can stand over the top tube flat-footed.
Measure your true cycling inseam (not your pants inseam) by standing flat-footed in your riding shoes and measuring the distance from the ground to your crotch.
Compare this to the Grappler's Standover Height (ranging from ~28 inches on the XS to 34 inches on the XL) to ensure you have at least 2 to 3 cm of clearance.
3. When in Doubt, Size Down
On the Surly forums, a common consensus among riders who fall on the border between two sizes is to size down. If you find yourself between a Medium and a Large, the Medium provides better maneuverability and a less stretched-out cockpit, especially if you plan on using it for singletrack or technical trail riding.
If you are located near Berkeley, CA, the best way to be absolutely sure is to visit a local Surly dealer (like Missing Link Bicycle Cooperative or Waterside Workshops) and test ride one in person!
