925-348-1244. We do not respond to texts because the SCAMMERS use texts to waste time.
Hours: 9-11:30 a.m., 1:30-4 p.m., M-F. By appointment only.
Open most days about 9 or 10, occasionally as early as 7 but some days as late as 12 or 1. We close about 5:30 or 6, occasionally about 4 or 5 but sometimes as late as 11 or 12. Some days or afternoons, we aren't here at all, and lately I've been here just about all the time except when I'm someplace else, but I should be here then too!
Everyone wants used pallet racks. And now we have some American made seismic design. 12" high x 42" deep uprights, 8' long beams and 42" deep x 46" wide wire decks.
1. Used pallet racks hardly ever will pass the code requirements for seismic design, which changes every time we have a major earthquake, because they were made before current revised safety codes were made. And since CAL-Osha is the safety code of California which requires all pallet racks to be permitted and seismic design, USED PALLET RACKS ARE ILLEGAL if they won't pass for seismic design in CA.
2. The same goes for Chinese made pallet racks which have no quality control of their steel. No engineer will put his wet stamp on the calculations necessary to get your permit. Therefore, CHINESE MADE PALLET RACKS ARE ILLEGAL.
3. Also, pallet racks from catalogs made outside of California are not seismic design so PALLET RACKS BOUGHT THROUGH CATALOG HOUSES ARE ILLEGAL.
4. Do you want to know which pallet racks are legal in CA? NEW PALLET RACKS MADE IN CALIFORNIA ARE LEGAL IF YOU GET THE NECESSARY PERMIT. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PERMIT THE PALLET RACKS ARE ILLEGAL. That's right. You have to prove your pallet racks can withstand the strongest earthquake in your fault zone with your loads on them. We can provide that proof in the form of California structural engineer's calculations with their wet stamp backing up the calculations.
We have new California made pallet racks that ARE seismic design (earthquake resistant/safe to use), teardrop style, green and orange, Interlake style, "Hannibal" brand 8'h, 10'h, 12'h, 16'h, 20'h, 24'h x 36, 42, 44, 48"d, GREEN SEISMIC TEARDROP UPRIGHTS. Ask for the innovative uprights that are knocked down for ease of shipping; and are easily set up with nuts and bolts.
Then we have ORANGE BEAMS that are 6', 8', 9', 10', 12' long with capacities from 2200 lbs./pair to 8204 lbs./pair.
Don't forget about the wire decks made necessary by the fire dept. They want you to have "flow through" decks that allow the sprinklers to put out the fire below, the heat to rise, set off the alarm and activate the vents. Call for prices.
We finance, ship to your door, and install what we sell.
We also sell USED PALLET RACK if it is AMERICAN SEISMIC DESIGN. Chinese made and most of the used pallet racks are not seismic design. Chinese pallet racks have no quality control so you cannot get your required permit for them. Used pallet racks cannot keep up with the changes made every time we have an earthquake. You don't usually see used pallet racks less than 10 years old and by that time we have had 3 earthquakes that caused seismic design changes making the footplates larger, increasing the number of connector rivets on the ends of the beams from 2 to 3, and sometimes requiring backers (double columns) on the upright channels to at least the first beam level.
How do you get your forklift from the ground to your dock or the bed of a truck? Use a MOBILE YARD RAMP. They roll around to various locations and can be towed by your forklift. They adjust in height with the use of a pump handle. They have different capacities for whatever you need and various lengths to fit any situation. The level off feature at the top end is needed to see where your forks are headed in the truck to load or unload.
Ground-to-trailer application best served with 36' ramp including a 6' level off. Note the lip on the top end that is welded onto a frame for long lasting support of 20,000 lbs. capacity as opposed to a flimsy hinged steel plate that doesn't have 20,000 lbs. capacity. Other sizes and capacities available.
All steel welded construction. MADE IN AMERICA. Ramps made in China do not have quality control of their steel. Therefore, the capacities cannot be guaranteed.
Add the full undercarriage with solid 18" rubber tires standard: pneumatic tires optional.
Double-action hydraulic pump-the hydraulic system allows for smooth and quick raising of the front lip to the proper dock or trailer height. Simply open the release valve to safely lower the unit into position. The pump is mounted internally to protect it from accidental damage. Or we can replace it with cheaper old-fashioned trailer support wheels that are much harder to adjust.
Capacities from 16,000 to 60,000 lbs.
Wide range of capacities and sizes available.
Steel serrated grating for traction and strength.
Beveled approach provides smooth transition.
Safety chains are included to secure the Yard Ramp to the dock.
Used pallet jacks leak. PALLET JACKS really are great for moving up to 5500 pounds on 1 pallet. That's 2.25 tons! And they are so much more maneuverable than forklifts in tight spaces. All the controls are in the handle. Want to put on the brakes? Just lower the pallet to the ground by pulling the trigger. Easy rolling poly-wheels make the job of repositioning pallets on the floor easy. Get an E-Z LIFT PALLET JACK that lasts with A FULL 12 MONTH WARRANTY. 5500 lbs. capacity. All controls in the handle. Smooth rolling polyurethane wheels. 2.9" lowered height of forks. 20.5" or 27" widths x 36", 42", or 48" length of forks. We used to sell used pallet jacks but within a few weeks the customer would come back and want to get a refund because it leaked. Remember used equipment is sold "AS-IS, WHERE-IS, CASH AND CARRY, NO REFUNDS, CREDITS, WARRANTY, EXCHANGES OR RETURNS".
Warehouse Racking Permits in California - Know Before You Buy
All California cities and counties require a permit for warehouse racks taller than 5’ 8”. The state of California also requires warehouse pallet racks to meet seismic (earthquake) code. Before you buy pallet racks from the east coast, Canada, or elsewhere, find out what you need to know about installing pallet racks, or other warehouse shelving.
Warehouse Storage Rack Permits:
When applying for a permit, the fire department will always be involved. They need to sign off on your racking system for your safety and theirs. A large job may require a separate analysis by a licensed fire engineer to ensure there is adequate fire protection within the building.
Generally speaking, storage racks taller than 5’ 8” require a permit. Storing products in concentrated small spaces creates the potential for a fire hazard. Anything over 12 feet is considered a high pile because of the increased amount of material that can burn and because certain storage methods impact fire behavior.
The fire department looks at several factors before granting approval. Considerations vary by area, but here are a few common ones to know
- The maximum storage height (top of beam plus the pallet)
- Is there at least 18” clearance below the sprinkler head? Greater clearance may be required depending on the products being stored.
- How densely is the product being stored? In-rack sprinklers are sometimes required.
- How combustible is the product? For example, Class III plastics are more volatile than: Groups A, B (class IV) or C.
- How many sprinkler heads are there?
- What is the temperature at the sprinkler head? At the ceiling?
- What other features does the building have: smoke vents, draft curtains, smoke detection systems?
A properly-designed system will include flue space between pallet loads. This space allows heat from a fire to vent upwards, queuing for the sprinkler system to activate sooner. Solid deck systems typically require in-rack sprinklers, but wire decks may not as water and other suppressants can flow through and around them.
This is in addition to the seismic engineering required for the building department. They need to make sure the rack you’re placing in the warehouse will hold the weight of the product.
Pallet Racks and California Seismic Code
There are plenty of racks produced on the east coast (and elsewhere) for California. The manufacturers are aware of the extra bracing, larger footplates, stronger uprights and load beams needed. However, there are also a lot of rack dealers that sell rack by the piece or truckload for a price that is too good to be true….it generally is.
Some won’t tell you their rack doesn't meet CA standards, some will. Some companies purchase sub-standard rack anyway because it’s less money. But, will it pass inspection? More importantly, how much will it end up costing you to fix?
When purchasing rack, spend a little time upfront and ask for the seismic calculations for your address. This will save you a boatload of headaches as you move forward.
There was a company who purchased a mezzanine system along with rack from a vendor in Canada. It was a good product, well built, and the price was 25% less than what they were quoted in California. The local building department looked over the plans with the engineered drawings provided by the manufacturer and the plans were rejected due to the lack of seismic details required for California. Not only that, the cost to bring the material up to code was twice the cost of what it would have cost to buy the racks in California to begin with.
The customer was out the original dollars, plus shipping and had to spend the money to purchase all new products from the correct vendor. Needless to say, the purchasing agent is no longer with the company.
Can You Install Warehouse Racking Without a Permit?
Can you? Yes. Should you? We don’t recommend it. Installing without a permit sets the stage for a lot of headaches and heartache. Unfortunately, some businesses take the chance and do it anyway. Ultimately, you are responsible for the permitting for the rack. There are 9 pages of violations and fines in "UFC-Article 81. section 1013".
http://dps.gov.mp/downloads/Fire/Operational_Support/Fire_Code_Section_1013_Fines.pdf
Worse case: the city can make you take it all down, fine you, have you apply for a permit and prove the rack you purchased will be adequate for the product you’re storing. It will also have to pass the fire department’s regulations. Also, you’d better hope there isn’t an earthquake or a fire.
Getting a permit can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, but it’s better than having the city close you down. At AMOT, our experienced team can help you find the right rack and provide a permit package for approval.
What’s Required for a Pallet Racking Permit?
Requirements differ from city to city, but generally the municipality wants to see the configuration for your pallet racks to make sure they don’t create a safety hazard by blocking doors, or creating dead-end aisles. Some cities require detailed drawings of the attachments for the columns and posts along with the method and type of anchors used. You’ll also be asked to provide engineering/seismic calculations for anything weight bearing or bolted to the floor.
One Last Thing: another common mistake buyers make is not buying enough racking. Consider buying a racking system with a few extra bays (if your facility has room for them). Your future self will thank you.
The Bottom Line: inexpensive rack that seems too good to be true - probably is.
1. Insurance companies will no longer insure a distributor who sells used racks and shelving because they are not usually seismic design. They now have statistics that show the frequency of failures. There is a lot of used equipment being sold by people without insurance.
a. If you buy it and it collapses and kills someone who can you take to court? Do you remember this person from Craigslist that sold you these racks? Did he give you an invoice with his company name, address and telephone number on it? Of course, when they were selling it, they were moving and they are no longer at that address or telephone number. Did you get a forwarding address?
b. And used equipment is always sold "Cash and carry, no guarantees, warranties, returns, refunds, exchanges, or credits". But boy was it cheap!
c. Did they ask you what capacity was needed for each shelf and upright?
d. Did they offer to install it properly for you?
e. Did they offer to ship it to you?
f. Did you get a written quote with their company name, address and phone number?
g. Did they tell you what brand it was? Or where did it come from?
h. Is there any value to purchasing equipment from a reputable dealer who has been around for a long time? (We have been serving the S.F. Bay Area since 1976.)
2. Used racks sit outside collecting water in the beams and uprights. The water rusts the racks from the inside out making them weaker.
3. Every time we have an earthquake the standards for seismic design increase in strength. Used racks cannot keep up with these changes. When someone sells their racks, they are usually at least 10 years old. During that time, we have had 3 earthquakes and the footplates get larger, the column gets larger, the number of rivets in the beam connector plates increase due to sideways thrust. What was "seismic design" 10 years ago is not seismic design today.
4. Chinese made racks have no quality control. Therefore, no engineer who does the calculations to get your permit will put his wet stamp on the calculations because he cannot guarantee that the strength is uniform throughout the racks. The Chinese made racks never have any identification on the racks like the American made racks do. We won't buy used Chinese racks because without identification you cannot get a permit. And if they cannot be permitted then they are not seismic design. If they are not seismic design, they are dangerous to your health. And a distributor of dangerous racks will lose his insurance. I won't take on that kind of liability. Why should you?
Do your homework and prevent delays and lost time and money down the road. Work with experienced professionals who can ensure things are done right the first time. They will quote you New California made Seismic designed pallet racks that will pass codes in CA and have them installed with the proper anchoring and inspections. It takes 12 weeks, or up to a year to get a permit and finish, but the job will be done right the first time. Even if you don't get a permit do it right the first time. Why buy racks and shelving that will not qualify for a permit and then have the fire dept. or PG and E tell you that you must have a permit and they tell you that you have 10 days to start the permit process or they will cut off your electricity. When you start the permit process you finally go to someone like us who can get your permit but then we tell you that these racks and shelving are not seismic design so you will have to throw them out and buy new American made racks and shelving to get your permit. (We advise you to scrap the racks because if you resell them then you are incurring the same liability for selling non-seismic design racks as we would have and there are 9 pages of fines on the Internet under "UFC_Fire_Code_Section_1013_Fines" that could be charged to you.) So, all that money you thought you saved on used racks or Chinese made racks is lost, plus the entire cost of the racks because now you have to buy New American made Seismic designed pallet racks and shelving with footplates, anchors and tie plates or row spacers.
I had an old boss who used to say, "Why is it that we never have enough time or money to do the job right the first time? But we always find the time and money to do it right the second time!"
We also have NEW INNOVATIVE MINI-PALLET RACKS used for hand stacking 6' high, 8'h, 10'h x 18 "d, 24"d, 36"d and 48"d. Also 12'h x 3'd, and 4'd, with wood or wire shelves, 4', 6', 8' long. Why use heavy duty pallet racks when you don't need them? They look exactly like pallet racks; put together the same way; are the same green uprights and orange beams with teardrop shaped holes. But they are smaller. These also use the revolutionary knocked-down feature of the uprights for low-cost storage and less expensive shipping; and are easily set up with nuts and bolts.
We have the exciting new wood and steel INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH RIVET TYPE SHELVING that is gray and very popular because of it's ease of set up (boltless) and adjustment, both new and used. This fascinating shelving/bulk rack can be installed with a hammer. It comes in sizes 3'h-15'high, single piece heavy duty and seismic uprights (versus the wobbly 2-piece uprights that are sold with the "gorilla" racks), and 12"deep-4'd, starting with 3 shelves for a 7'h unit which is most popular. Then you can add as many shelves as you like. Capacities range from 225#/shelf to 2000#/shelf which is incredibly as much as the mini-pallet racks. Call for pricing.
We also sell NEW EXCLUSIVE STRUCTURAL CANTILEVER RACKS for pipe, moldings, lumber, rod, anything too long for pallet racks. (Keep in mind that pallet racks come as long as 12' and there are a lot of wood lengths that can be stored on the less expensive pallet racks up to 12' long saving you money. And you can store longer than 12' on the top level of pallet racks.) The cantilever racks range in size from 6' high to 20'h x 18" deep to 4-6'd. They come in single side or double side uprights. Bracing is 2'-10' wide. Arms can be straight or slanted, and with or without lips to keep things from rolling off. Call for pricing.
New SAFETY Yellow ROLLING STEEL LADDER with 50-degree forward descent, and lock down front wheels. Make sure you get on top of a used ladder before you buy it. If it is bent it will wobble and it is very scary at the top of the ladder. All used ladders have been damaged. We used to buy them and fix them but then the welders stopped fixing them because there is too much liability. 450 lbs. capacity, Yellow powder coated paint finish, Step-Lock positive locking system engages when the user steps on the first step, Perforated slip-resistant tread design, steel, gray color, with handrails all 3 sides, ships unassembled, takes 3-4 weeks to ship, sizes are 2 step to 16 step which is 13.33 feet to the top step, most are 24"wide steps, optional gradual rise offered for ease of walking down with cartons in hand, optional top step depth of 20", Complies with applicable OHSA & ANSI standards, steel prices are going up every week so buy now. Don't wait. We have seen 100% increases in the past year on new steel pallet racks.
Are your pallet racks ILLEGAL?
If you cannot get your CAL-Osha required permit for them then they are illegal.
Used racks are usually illegal. We used to buy used racks to resell but not anymore since 99% are not seismic design for the state of earhquake prone CA.
Chinese racks are illegal because they have no quality control of their steel.
The structural engineers who do the calculations will not put their wet stamp on any calculations for that reason.
Racks purchased from a catalog are illegal in CA. You have to specify that you want to get a permit in CA for them to furnish the seismic pallet racks for California. And then there is an upcharge.
What is legal? New seismic design pallet racks made in CA and designed for your load capacities near your closest fault line on a 6" concrete slab and anchored with certified inspectors.
So, you don't care about that stuff? When you have an accident that kills or permanently disables someone during the next earthquake the relative's attorney of the harmed person will sue you for providing ILLEGAL PALLET RACKS.
