CASTING CALL
We are seeking five versatile and expressive dancers and movement-performers for a developmental musical theater workshop in Berkeley, CA.
“THE METAMORPHOSIS of Barry Schleckman” is a new musical that re-imagines Franz Kafka’s classic novella in which a family wakes up to discover their son has transformed into a giant insect. While leaning heavily on comedy, the show remains true to the troubling familial dysfunction at the heart of the story. This production will be a collaborative process, focusing on the creation and exploration of movement and dance while backed by a pre-recorded soundtrack.
All five ensemble members will be masked throughout the play, so performers must have a strong understanding of body language, movement and gesture. This may include mime, acrobatics and dance--the ability to use the body to convey emotion and character.
Performers will be playing multiple characters, including a middle aged father and mother, an office worker, civil servants, efficiency experts, a circus showman, an exterminator and a house maid.
Location: All rehearsals and performances will be at The Monkey House, a 45-seat performance space on University Ave. in Berkeley.
Dates: Auditions will begin soon at the Monkey House, the week of January 26. For the audition, performers should be prepared to experiment and create movement on the fly, responding to elements of the musical’s soundtrack, which we are happy to provide to you in advance. Rehearsals will begin late February. The show will run for four successive Sundays beginning late March. A successful run will be followed by additional dates, likely on weekend nights.
Pay: Performers will receive a share of the gate, a sliding scale admission of $20-40 per person. Use of the facility may also be offered in trade. www.themonkeyhouse.org
