This triptych combines the narrative of the Harrowing of Hell as described in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus and Dante. This is characterized by the soteriological paradox that all prophets of the Old Testament, and in fact, all humans since Adam, were said to be in Hell waiting since the time of their deaths. As such, in the image the following characters are depicted: Isaiah, John the Baptist, Adam and King David, and Christ is openly identified with the sun. It also includes the Inca ruler, who was included in this episode in Sermons and paintings of viceregal Peru (Diego Quispe Tito’s Apocalypse in Cusco). Last but not least, Lucifer is represented following Dante’s Inferno: as three-faced, six-winged, and devouring Judas, Casius, and Brutus, and as the center of gravity of the material world.
