It uses a 3 foot-long tightening bar.
"The standing press is used to compress books during the process of binding and there are several different forms of it. The typical standing press consists of vertical pillars, a long stout screw, a platen, and the bed. In the bookbinder's press the power is applied by a long iron bar that is inserted in holes drilled in a ball of iron that forms the bottom of the screw. The folded sections of the book are piled upon the bed of the press, and the platen is screwed down as tightly as possible."- excerpted with deletions from "Bookbinding" by P. Hasluck
Note this press could be used for other work that is commonly done with a hydraulic press, such as jewelry, repair, silversmithing, bending, piercing, punching, bearing work, etc. Of course it has a much taller working area than all hydraulic presses. We calculate it generates about 11 tons of pressure. If you contact me, I can email pictures.
