This historical house was built in 1894 by the famous architect Thomas J. Welsh (1845–1918). It is the earliest Colonial Revival–style building in Berkeley, with the first owner being Captain John Slater (1849–1908). It was the former the home of former Berkeley mayor Samuel C. Irving (1858–1930).
