If you are Asian American or European American and at least 18 years of age, you are invited to participate in this study. It is hoped that the knowledge gained from this study will ultimately benefit society by giving professionals and researchers a better understanding of how individuals experience their emotions. The University of Michigan Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board has determined that this study is exempt from IRB oversight (HUM00021690). If you are interested, and have 15 - 25 minutes on your hands, please consider filling out this survey:
About Africa Aid

Africa Aid provides the foundation for innovative partnerships and intimate community-based relationships between developing African communities and their more established American counterparts. To create a sustainable and mutually beneficial community partnership, Africa Aid characterizes the problems of an African community and then integrates foreign aid projects into American university curriculum, allowing university students and faculty experts to design solutions to extreme poverty. Africa Aid implements the resulting university designed solutions in Africa, working alongside African communities to establish basic levels of Education, Health, Water, and Economic Empowerment.

Medi-Cal reimbursements for health care coverage have been FROZEN until further notice. This means NO patient in California with Medi-Cal (i.e. Medicare) coverage will be able to access treatment or even a check-up for any health care need, pending today, until Sacramento comes to a conclusion on the budget! The debate around this budget's passing has been going on for months now, and California's need for accessible health care is immediate. For some, even a day's wait for continued access could be catastrophic.

SF ROMP provides care to injured and orphan animals so they can be released back into the wild.

Volunteering to become an orphaned wildlife foster carer is very rewarding, but also requires training and is a big commitment.

There are many other volunteer positions that require a minimum of training or time commitment to get started and make a difference for wildlife.

Foster care volunteers care for healthy orphaned wildlife.

Clinic help volunteers help with daily clinic activities such as cleaning kennels and cages, washing dishes and doing the laundry. Come and meet the SF ROMP patients !

Transport volunteers drive orphaned babies to foster care homes and pick up donated produce. If you can help, please email or call us with details of your availability and the kind of vehicle you have.

Cage assemblers staple together the wire mesh panels used to house fostered wildlife. These enclosures are easy to build and no prior experience is necessary, but many hands make light work !

PR volunteers put up posters, distribute leaflets and talk to visitors to the SF ROMP booth at events.

Media and video volunteers are needed to help to produce a series of educational videos that focus on peaceful coexistence with wildlife and the need to preserve biodiversity. We also need volunteers with media experience and/or connections who can help let the public know about our programs.

Computer help volunteers we need techies who can provide occasional help with troubleshooting the SF ROMP computer. We also need volunteers to design graphics for our newsletters and website, enter data into our databases and to help update our website. Please call!

Office angels please come and help with our office administrative tasks. There is plenty to do and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Special project volunteers there are many interesting projects you can help with: building nest boxes, winter-proofing enclosures, making posters and thank-you gifts and more.

Habitat planting volunteers help garden the SF ROMP wildlife patch at the West End of Golden Gate Park.

Contact SF ROMP at contactus@sfromp.org or call 415-350-WILD to volunteer. THANK YOU!

Since 1996 this project have been organized together with the Michoacan University and an organization called Ecotonia. This year the volunteers will work with the people of the village to protect the sea turtle, by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information about the turtles.
In this frame a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project, as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.

The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting the international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out mostly at night, together with the people from Colola Village. They are the people who will work with the group and explain what to do. For this camp we will need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved with the work of protection of the turtle.
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people - to help improve the town like putting names of the streets, helping to arrange a multi-use playground and maybe some cleaning work.

The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Age range: 18 and over

The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defence of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.

The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the moment of the project.

Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.

Special requirements: No special Profile is required for this project. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested by this project. A large adaptability is required from the volunteers in any cases for these projects.

Participate in exciting study about disaster preparedness (financial district)

Professor Eric Klinenberg of New York University, who is the author of the award-winning book, Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, and Aaron Platt and Javier Arbona, doctoral students at the University of California, Berkeley, are seeking participants for an exciting new project on disaster preparedness in the Bay Area.

We are hoping to speak with people who run the gamut on preparedness, from those who check their earthquake kits daily to those who have never given disasters a second thought. The goal is just to get a sense of how people go about thinking about preparedness and what they actually do to prepare.

Some notes about the participation:

*If you agree to participate, you'll be asked to take part in an open-ended interview about disaster preparedness in person (no phone calls). The interview would take place in a public area that is most convenient for you (i.e. near where you live, work, at a coffee shop, park, etc).

*It will take about 1 hour.

*Your participation is voluntary.

*You have the right to leave the study at any time, refuse to answer a question, or stop the interview at any time.

*Your responses will be kept totally confidential. Your name or other identifying information will NEVER be used.

Thank you!

Charity project in support of an orphanage in Bulgaria (Volunteer abroad)

"Rodopski pansion" is one of the biggest social establishments of that kind in Bulgaria, providing home and care for more than 140 young people at the ages of 5 to 16. Most of them have grown up in other children's social homes, and, when becoming teenagers, they come to "Rodopski pansion" in Plovdiv. They attend different high schools in the town.

The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. Those who have completed 19 years are not subject of social care any more. They have to leave the orphanage and start an independent living. Many of them turn to be unprepared to make this step after spending all their lives up to now in Social care institutions. That's why the interaction with other young people from different countries while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project is essential for their socialization and adaptation.

The volunteers will be engaged with organizing variety of activities like: sports events, gardening, group games, thematic workshops, walks in the city of Plovdiv, visits to different sights and events, etc. for the children and the youngsters in order to optimize their free time during the summer period. Some maintenance and domestic works will be done together with the residents.

Because of the lack of funds and the difficult economic situation of the social establishment, the volunteers are invited to contribute with their creativity, enthusiasm and ideas. They have to know that this is definitely not a touristic or leisure program in which they just have to join in with the orphans. The experience of more than five years proves that even without expensive events, this can be an unforgettable and really rewarding time for the both sides - the volunteers and the youngsters.

The Orphanage is planning a new playground for the kids. If they get support from the sponsors and the construction starts as anticipated, the volunteers will help with the final works, cleaning the site and decoration of the playing equipment.

Project dates:
August 3 - August 16, 2008
August 17 - August 30, 2008

Accommodation and food will be provided for the participants at the orphanage boarding house.

Breast Cancer Early Detection Study
Help us fight breast cancer by finding it earlier, when treatment is more successful and less invasive.
A Silicon Valley company is developing a rapid screening test for younger women.
The scan takes 10 minutes, is painless, and does not involve X-rays or blood tests.
(This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute.)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? We are looking for paid female volunteers, ages 21-50, because mammograms are not as reliable for this age group as they are for post-menopausal women over 50.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN? While you lie on your back, a nurse will gently place a hand held scanner (the size of a pack of cards) against the skin of your breast at several locations. A technician, sitting out of view on the other side of a privacy screen, will take notes and run the equipment. There will be no physical examination, and no photographs taken.
WHAT WILL I LEARN? We will not be able to make a diagnosis of cancer in any of our volunteers. This is because we are only studying normal values in women without cancer. However, by helping us you are helping other women in the future, who may benefit when this test is taken into a larger, clinical study. However, if there is, at the end of the study, any scan that looks abnormal we will be recommending a follow up mammogram, which will be paid for, at Stanford.
WHAT DO I RECEIVE? You will receive a $50 check on completion of your test as our way of saying “thanks”.
WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS STUDY? The U.S. Government has provided funds for this study. This technology is under development at Stanford, University of California, Univ. of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere.
THERE ARE A FEW REQUIREMENTS BEFORE YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOLUNTEER:
− You must be female
− You must be 21 to 50 years old
− You must not have (or have had in the past) breast cancer
− You must not have (or have had in the past) breast implants or breast surgery
− You must not have had breast biopsy, breast trauma, or breast infection in the past 90 days.
WILL MY PRIVACY PROTECTED? Yes, strict Federal Laws (called HIPAA) protect your privacy. Your name and personal information will be removed from all data before it is submitted to the FDA or published. However, certain agencies such as the FDA occasionally and legally may request a list of our subjects’ names.
WHO DO I CONTACT? Please provide your first name (and optionally your last name), contact phone, e-mail address, and the best time for us to call. Send this to breastcancerstudy@gmail.com. A nurse will call you to confirm your interest, verify eligibility, answer your questions, and schedule a study. Studies are performed on mondays during normal business hours.
For thirty-one years now, we have taken in and rehabilitated thousands of injured, sick and orphaned California’s native wildlife in Solano County. You can help us care for the animals! Currently we have an urgent need for volunteers. Orphaned baby birds and other wildlife have arrived!!! 13 baby opossums received in one afternoon and 5 baby racoons removed from wall of house in Rio Vista!!! Baby racoons now numbering 18 on site. We need volunteers for our 7 days a week operations. We operate in two shifts per day, 9 am to 2 pm and 1pm to 6 pm. If you are over 16 and love animals we could use your help with caring for the babies. There will be lots of laundry and dishes to wash as well as pens to clean up. Did I mention the baby birds (30 at last count) will need feeding every twenty minutes, those little guys are hungry! If you don’t have the time for a once a week commitment then you can help with a donation of money, aluminum cans or supplies to help us keep going. Here is a list of what we always need:

Food: apples, seedless grapes, carrots, peapods, bananas, meat (lean steak and ground beef/hamburger only), raw fish and shrimp, puppy chow, dog chow, unsalted nuts (in-shell and out), bird seed, mouse food, raw eggs, mushrooms, avocados, dry cat food, Evo kitten chow, plain yogurt, dried egg whites, calcium powder, and bird liquid vitamin.

Other supplies: bottled water, paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues, Dawn liquid dish soap, laundry detergent, newspaper, Pine-Sol cleaner, pine shavings and mouse bedding, small pet water bottles, bleach, plastic baggies (all sizes), anti-bacterial hand soap and lotion, small and tall kitchen garbage bags, trash compactor bags.
