HarperOne, a San Francisco-based imprint of HarperCollins Publishers seeks a motivated university student who would like to learn the ins and outs of editing in the publishing industry. What are the qualities that make for a best-selling book? How does a publishing company decide on which book proposals to publish? What’s involved in the acquisition process and working with book agents and authors? By taking part in regular office administration duties, special projects, and important publishing meetings, the intern will learn all this and more.
Job Responsibilities:
*Perform administrative and editorial duties and assist in coordinating the publication process from manuscript to book.
*Compose correspondence, memos, and other related items as needed; prepare and respond to routine correspondence.
*Return rejected manuscripts; assist in researching permissions information.
*Maintain communication with authors and agents; read, edit, judge manuscripts; exposure to publicity and promotion, copyediting and design process and illustrations procurement.
*Assist others in department as needed.
*Work with editing manuscripts.
*Write jacket copy for book covers.
Job Qualifications:
*Must be in active pursuit of a college degree and be able to receive academic credit. This is non-negotiable.
*Must possess college-level understanding and use of English language; be detail-oriented
Openings are for the Spring (January-May) and Summer (May-August) semesters with a minimum commitment of 2 days per week or 15 hours per week.
