Have fun caroling for charity for two hours in December (All Bay Area)

Hello! We need as many people as possible to help out for the second annual "Carol for a Cause." You don't need to be a good singer you just need to have a good heart. You will be singing in groups of about 8 to 10 during a one night in December wandering through neighborhoods fairly local to where you live or further away if you so choose. It will probably be around 7 to 9pm at night. There will be advanced notice for the neighborhoods so they can look forward to your group’s arrival and we will have one of the event organizers with you to help with organizing and executing the actual night of the event. One of the main purposes for the evening is to accept donations from the houses we pass by and use that for various charities in the bay area of which each group will choose to represent from an option of five bay area charities.

Mostly though it will be fun and bring the Christmas spirit to many who may be feeling a bit, well, hum bug.

Last year was our first year doing the event and we had 4 groups go out caroling and raised just shy of $2000 which went to various local charities. It was a magical experience seeing people’s faces light up as we came caroling along their neighborhoods. We received a lot of love as well as requests to make this a yearly event. We are determined to build off last year and grow in size so that we may bring the joy of caroling to many areas and in turn gather much needed donations for people less fortunate than we currently may be.

Please reply to this email or to sublimelavelle@gmail.com if you are interested and let me know if you have others that may be interested in joining us as well. Another possibility to consider is to have your business sponsor a group of employees and they could maybe wear some sort of company logo (hat, sweatshirt etc.) as they go out caroling. We could also have groups compete to see who could raise the most donations if you are so inclined. While whole groups (schools, business, churches) are encouraged most of our volunteers are individuals which we place together in a group which as it turns out, is a great way to meet amazing people such as yourself!

Once we get an idea of the scope of volunteers we can start planning more details during the next two weeks.

Thanks for reading and we hope you will consider joining us for a couple of hours of merriment in December!

Please visit our MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/431701876 and add us as a friend

We have also set up a facebook account under “Caroling BayArea”

Happy Holidays!!

Under One Roof Needs Volunteers! (Downtown, Castro Street)

The 2009 holiday season marks the nineteenth year that Under One Roof has served the HIV/AIDS community. Since 1990, countless volunteers and customers alike have transformed Under One Roof into an organization sustained by compassion.

The mission of Under One Roof has always been to raise unrestricted funding to support our AIDS Service Organization partners through our retail operations. They, in turn, provide direct services to the men, women and children in our community that are affected by HIV/AIDS – services like prevention, housing, meals, advocacy, counseling and more.

While the economic downturn has caused difficulty and disappointment at Under One Roof, it has also created new energy and focus. Despite adversity, we still care and have a renewed commitment to the community. Our temporary holiday store at Westfield Centre in Downtown San Francisco is just one example of the silent promise our volunteers and staff have made to meet the mission of Under One Roof.

Our temporary Holiday Store at the Westfield Centre in San Francisco, located on the 4th Floor Dome Level, offers a unique mix of ornaments, holiday-inspired gifts and San Francisco mementos. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to enhance our fundraising efforts while bringing the message of our mission to a broader audience.

We are looking for individuals interested in volunteering at either our Westfield Centre location (dress code in effect at this location) or at our flagship store at 518A Castro Street. Opportunities include sales, greeting customers, stock work, gift wrapping and more - everything needed to run a retail operation. Shifts are generally 3 to 4 hours from morning through evening.

Because Under One Roof is a volunteer-driven organization, we could really use your help. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer for this holiday season, please contact Chris Christensen at chris@underoneroof.org or at 415-503-2300 x302.

As we approach our twentieth year, with your help, Under One Roof will continue to create hope for those that struggle with HIV/AIDS. Volunteering will help us forge ahead, grow and continue to make a difference.

Great Integration, a Chamber Hip-Hop Opera is an exciting collaborative effort between the award winning Push Dance Company and Ensemble Mik Nawooj. We are looking to raise $ 10,000 for the premiere in June, 2010 which covers; 9 musicians, 5 dancers, rehearsal spaces, venue, lighting, stage design, props, audio/video recording, piano tunning, and PR.

We need interns to make cold calls to small businesses and corporate companies around the Bay Area to contribute to our awesome super amazing great work. Seriously, it's going to be pretty simple. We tell you what to say, and you dial and tell them about the project, and of course to DONATE.

Here are some of the links you could check out to get a better idea of who we are and what we are trying to accomplish. We've been getting a lot of attention and already had an interview in regards to the performance from a Texas based online music journal, My Denton Music.
Will trade my artwork, old or commissioned, for a good tutor who can help me fill in the gaps in my understanding of basic concepts in mathematics like integration, differentiation, functions, derivatives, and the like.
Volunteers needed to create experiment in Entrainment (San Francisco)

We are creating The Octave in San Francisco - an experiment in the healing of the people we love by the process of Entrainment.

What is Entrainment?

It's the magical phenomenon in physics of one atom evoking its "state" in another atom ... a galaxy apart.

How is this possible? How can two atoms share the same state where they're not connected. Physicists attempt to explain it using mind boggling ideas like Quantum Energy.

But we will actually experience it working on Sunday No 15th at the Fort Mason Center.

Join me at 1pm for a free lecture on Entrainment and I will show you how to Entrain positivity and balance in those whom you love ....everywhere.

We will Entrain our loved ones, those who need nurturing, our bodies and each other.

This is a free talk on how Entrainment can be applied to our Relationships, our Health, our Culture, our Undertsanding, our Economy, our Government and our Art

To register just reply to this email and we'll put you on the list - space is limited.

I look forward to spending time with you as we enthrall to this amazing process.

SMART's mission is to ensure that motivated middle school students have access to a high quality education regardless of their families' financial status. Schools, Mentoring and Resource Team (SMART) is an educational non-profit organization that works with private middle schools in San Francisco to provide motivated students who cannot otherwise afford the opportunities and resources of a private school education. It is SMART's goal that upon graduating from middle school, participants will demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and a strong sense of values positioning them for personal and professional success in high school, college and beyond. The SMART program is comprised of five elements: education, mentoring/tutoring, after school programs, summer programs, and family support.

This opportunity compliments a 40 hour work week!

Minimal Commitment: All volunteer's commit to working with their students for one academic school year. Tutors come in once a week for an hour and a half.
We are uniquely positioned as an organization that brings together business, labor

Global Service Corps, a longstanding Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Tanzania, offers a unique way to experience Tanzania through our Volunteer Vacations, Short-Term and Long-Term Volunteer Programs, International Internships, and Fellowship Programs.

Overseas volunteers in Tanzania and interns participate in two-week to six-month service-learning programs that focus on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Nutrition Education, Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security, and International Health. These programs can be experienced through the Community Training, Community Development or Integrated Program formats. GSC also offers a six-month to one-year Seeds of Sustenance (SOS) Fellowship Program for those with an advanced degree in public health, international health or international development. All Tanzania volunteer programs include in-depth cultural orientation and technical training, Swahili lessons, and a safari excursion!

What Our Volunteers Say About Sustainable Agriculture Program
“I enjoyed the project immensely. I am studying international development and environmental studies so to have field experience, all is it brief and armature on my part, has reaffirmed my conviction to these studies. It made me want to return to Tanzania as quickly as possible to continue work in related topics (not to mention reconnect with the powerful ties of friendship I have there).”

Cambodia, the Kingdom of Wonder, is home to majestic temple ruins, rainforests, laid- back coastal resorts, an increasingly cosmopolitan capital, and warm and gracious people.

Global Service Corp’s international volunteers discover Cambodia by living, working and learning with Cambodian people in their own communities. GSC participants who volunteer abroad with us in Cambodia join the staff of a residential children’s center for orphans or a community-based education program, sharing their time, talents, experience and knowledge with teachers, students and community members.

Living in local accommodations, Cambodia volunteers are immersed in the customs of the local culture by taking part in daily family activities. Evenings and weekends provide time for excursions around the area, seeing artisans at work producing hand-made crafts, visiting temples and museums, and perhaps joining a local festival.
Cambodia Volunteers can choose from a variety of service-learning programs including:
- Teaching HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education
- Orphanage Care in Cambodia
- Teaching English Abroad in Cambodia
- International Health Volunteering
- Integrated Volunteer Programs in Cambodia allow for combining two of more of these programs.
“I cannot truly say which experience that happened in Thailand could be defined as the most memorable. I had such an amazing time in Thailand and I would love to go back as soon as possible. However, I will always remember the orientation week touring around Bangkok and Singburi. My host family was the greatest! Everything was extremely memorable.” – Keith Bachman

Volunteer Mentors NeededSchool-To-College Program is looking for mentors!!

Founded by the Bar Association of San Francisco in 1999, STC is a mentoring program that encourages diverse and at-risk students to go to college and guides them through the college application process. STC works with students in grades 9 through 12 at Balboa High School, one of San Francisco’s most under-resourced and ethnically diverse schools. Over the past ten years, STC has ushered hundreds of students into top-tier universities, thereby reducing the achievement gap and diversifying college campuses nationwide

STC MAKES A DIFFERENCE
STC has been very successful over the years. In 2009, of 152 graduating seniors surveyed, more then 50% of the STC students were accepted into 4-year colleges, universities and private colleges as compared to just 12% of students that did not take advantage of the STC program.

We invite you to be a part of our School-To-College program this Fall. This is great a opportunity to check out the STC program and work with students as they prepare for the college application process. Potential mentors must attend ONE mandatory training session; the training sessions will explain your role as a mentor and train you to better assist students with the college application process. All sessions will be conveniently located at Balboa High School.

Dates and Times mentors are needed

Wednesday – 1:00pm to 5:30pm (For at least an hour)
Thursday – 3:30pm to 5:30pm (For at least an hour)

If being a mentor for School-To-College sounds interesting please send Brandon Butler an email at bbutler@sfbar.org

PRESERVING THE CULTURE OF THE HILL TRIBES IN NORTHERN THAILAND

                    December 14 - December 27, 2009
January 11 - January 24, 2010
February 8 - February 21, 2010
March 8 - March 21, 2010
April 12 - April 25, 2010
May 10 - May 23, 2010

Volunteer project: The Akhas are part of the Golden Triangle hill-tribe cultures. Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defense of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing different kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend on the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.
Special requirements: No special profile is required. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested in this project. Adaptability is required from the participants.
Age range: 18 and over
Project language: English
Leisure time: The free time will be organised according to the weather and the actuality of the communities but in general it will be essentially spent in the community. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about Akha cuisine, massage and specific handicraft. They might have the opportunity to attend traditional Akha ceremonies and events (like the principal Harvest celebration in March). If the weather permits it, trekking in the hills can also be foreseen.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted by the villagers in the communities where they will work. The conditions will be the same as for the Akhas themselves: very basic compared to urban Thailand, but very authentic. Do not expect occidental luxuries in any case.
Location: The project will be held in the Chiang Rai region (North-west Thailand) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the Golden Triangle borders, maybe one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma, Laos and China shapes the culture here.

For more details and enrollment, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US), 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org

Meet Malcolm, a young pitbull/border collie mix. Malcom is about 6 months old and a fun & friendly little guy. He gets along great with other dogs, walks well on the leash and even knows basic commands. Even though Malcolm is still a young pup he knows when to settle down and relax. He loves to crawl into his foster mom's lap to cuddle and is VERY affectionate. Malcolm would make a great companion to any family. Malcolm appears to be potty-trained.

Malcolm needs a new foster, starting Saturday afternoon due to his current foster's schedule. If you would like to foster Malcolm, please contact us! We provide collar, crate and leash, and ask that fosters provide dog kibble during the foster period.
NonProfit Social Venture Startup which puts love together with Justice and the Planet needs volunteers for 3 positions:
(can be called Internships, or given major professional titles with commensurate responsibilities (to enhance your resume), and eventually turn into
well paid positions if and when we become a hit, get funding or both.

The startup is a pioneering Internet company to help the approximately 97% of unhappy couples who cannot afford a marriage therapist--approximately 35MM-- to save (if savable)
and revitalize their marriages/committed relationships. Moreover, the founder wants to donate most of whatever revenues he is able to control
(beyond what might end up being due to investors) to help prevent war, increase democracy, and save the planet. Since revenues could reach $10mm/mo, this startup could have substantial impact --could do an immense amount of good for millions and millions of people. The founder has devoted fulltime and most of his savings into the research and development of the company, which includes 3 highly talented individuals. Our BusinessPlan was one of the finalists in a major BP competition.

The positions or areas of responsibility the volunteer can choose from are as follows:

Psych Research Director
Intern or Director of Marketing (or Social Media Marketing)
Director of Business Development (or Intern)

You can work from home and choose your own hours, though prefer at least 1-2hrs per day be during working hours in order to reach people in their office, unless you dislike the phone and only
want to do Internet research and email, which would also be OK.
Minimum Hours: 10, though closer to 20hrs/wk the better

To Apply: In subject box indicate: CL/[city]/Volunteer/[which of the 3 positions you prefer]
A short note as to
1) why us and what you hope to get out of working for us (to help ensure we meet your needs)
2) available hours and
3) any particular skills or contacts (potential mentors, people high up in companies or organizations)

We will then send detailed position description, as well as backgrounders on our startup.

Do you have a few extra hours a week and a desire to give back to your community and make a big difference in people's lives? Why not become an OMBUDSMAN? They are the trained and state-certified individuals who investigate complaints and help resolve problems for residents of nursing homes and long term care facilities. Maintaining a regular presence in these places enables the OMBUDSMAN to monitor the concerns of residents and function as an ADVOCATE for them, ensuring that their rights are upheld and promoting both quality of care and quality of life for this isolated and vulnerable group of citizens.

Due to the pressure of recent STATE-MANDATED BUDGET CUTS, we now depend more than ever on the generosity and civic spirit of our volunteers to make certain that these vital services are not curtailed or disrupted.

JOIN THE HYPHEN STAFF

But wait, what is Hyphen might you ask?

Hyphen is a national magazine for urban, in-the-know Asian Americans. Covering arts, culture and politics with substance, style and sass, Hyphen has become a media must for one of the fastest growing populations in America.

Hyphen was conceived in 2003 by San Francisco Bay Area journalists and community leaders who saw the need for a publication about Asian America that would go beyond Lucy Liu, sushi and yet another examination of the "model minority" story. With award-winning design and fresh perspectives that aren't just about identity issues, Hyphen covers the artists and change-makers who are shaping what it means to be Asian American. By showcasing people outside the boundaries of stereotypes, Hyphen acts as a cultural catalyst, inspiring its readership to branch out — to do, think and create.

Hyphen is not-for-profit and run entirely by volunteers. The hundreds of hours spent by writers, artists, editors, designers, web gurus, bloggers, [fill in the blank] coordinators, and other lackeys all unpaid. It's a labor of love.

BUSINESS TEAM

Hyphen is looking for smart, overachieving, creative, articulate, innovative, detailed-oriented and above all, dedicated members to join its Business Team. We are interested in social justice issues, politics and pop culture. There is no money involved, just the experience of working alongside the finest Asian American minds that community college ever produced.

General Duties & Responsibilities:
· Commit to attending meetings (two Tuesdays a month)
· Lend your hand to existing projects, such as advertising and sponsorship efforts, and event planning
· Brainstorm for the good of the magazine
· Lead new initiatives from start to finish (and take over others should you wish)
· Table at Hyphen sponsored events
· Sport our merchandise because it's in fashion every season

Knowledge and Skills:
· Proven human intelligence, don't worry we won't poke you to see if you respond to stimuli
· Team player, and not a lone wolf
· Self-motivated, hard-working ethic
· Post-identity politicked
· Down for the cause but not obsessed by it
· Not easily offended or dissuaded by hard-asses
· Loves culture, your momma and self (not in that order)

In a nutshell, we're looking for non-flaky folks landlocked to the San Francisco Bay Area. Those interested should submit a resume to hung@hyphenmagazine.com and fill out a questionnaire that we will provide you then.

Rollie is 3 year old rough coated collie mix. You would never guess he is three, since he very much still looks like a puppy. Just look at that sweet, innocent face. Rollie is a huge lover who can't get enough of hanging out on his foster parents' laps. He is quickly learning his basic commands and seems to be potty trained. He loves to run and play outside and has been getting along great with the playful pup in his foster home. He is a sweet, very laid back, snuggly dog who would fit in anywhere and seems to love everyone he comes in contact with.

Rollie needs a foster starting TOMORROW since his current foster needs to go out of town. He is so sweet though that you might fall in love and decide to adopt. Pls let me know if you can foster! We provide collar and leash and ask if fosters can provide food during the foster period.
Thanks!

Interested in learning more about recycling and composting? Confused about what goes into the green bin and blue bin? Be a waste wise volunteer this Saturday at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, and learn more while helping others.

On a typical Saturday at the market in 2007, more than one hundred 45-gallon garbage bags were sent to the landfill each week. Empty coffee cups, orange peels, glass bottles and paper plates were wasted at an alarming rate. Earth Day 2008, we introduced the 3 bin system found throughout SF. Now, over 90% of our waste is either recycled or composted. Volunteers help monitor each station to ensure everything goes to the right place. Sounds gross, however it's quite entertaining, you meet a lot of nice folks and you rarely handle any of the waste yourself. You'll simply answer questions and help the occasional shopper find the right bin for their coffee cup/apple core/soda can/whatever. There's a quick orientation before you start, and we'll provide materials and refreshments.

We need volunteers this Saturday, November 14th, from 10am to 2pm. We'll provide materials, refreshments and training.

To sign up, please e-mail ashleigh@cuesa.org, call 415-291-3276x105 or just show up at the market information booth. Check out http://www.cuesa.org/events/waste_wise/index.php for more details
