Founded in 1889, Family Service Agency of San Francisco is the oldest nonsectarian, nonprofit charitable social-services provider in the City and County of San Francisco. Our mission is to strengthen families by providing caring, effective, and innovative social services, with special emphasis on the needs of low-income families, children, and the elderly and disabled people, thus improving the quality of life for all San Franciscans.
Department Description
Family Service Agency has an annual budget of approximately $15 million, of that, the Development Department produces approximately $9 million in service contract proposals, and $1 million in private foundation and individual donations. In addition to the Development Director, the department has a staff of four: Associate Director, Grants Manager, Communications Manager and Database assistant.
Job Description
The Development Director provides leadership to Family Service Agencys efforts to obtain financial and other support to sustain its work, including planned, annual and deferred giving; approaches to individuals, foundations and corporations. The position manages the overall marketing and promotional functions to construct and market an appropriate image, develop ties with the community, and achieve individual giving goals. The position manages department budgets and participates as a member of the senior management team to formulate and implement policies and plans to meet the organizations short- and long-term objectives. The Director of Development will participate in all aspects of fundraising. Additional duties as needed.
Program Specific Responsibilities
Manage the Development Department which generates $12 million annually
Organize and oversee grant and contract proposal submissions, with some writing involved
Participate in the development of new enterprises and fee-for-service endeavors
Undertake direct-mail campaigns and capital campaigns
Oversee the semiannual newsletters
Participate in concept development and writing of organizational materials
Conduct major donor research and organize annual major donor program with board and management with an eye toward completing a capital campaign
Event planning and coordination
Understand and be able to utilize social media in fundraising efforts
Minimum Qualifications:
Excellent Management skills with experience in development
Excellent writing ability, including proofreading and copy-editing
Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to independently prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and manage several projects simultaneously
Demonstrated and documented success in fundraising
Broad understanding of all fundraising tools and how they work together
Must be able to assimilate and retain a great deal of information and frame it in clear, concise terms for potential audiences
Must be flexible, calm under pressure, and able to work well both independently and as part of a team
Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds including staff, consultants, board members, foundation staff, donors, business leaders, etc.
Ten years development experience in increasing positions of responsibility
