THE COLLEGE:
Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts is the largest regionally accredited, independent, nonprofit school of art and design in the western United States. Noted for the interdisciplinary nature and breadth of its programs, CCA offers studies in twenty undergraduate and eight graduate majors in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and writing. The college offers bachelor of architecture, bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, master of architecture, master of arts, master of business administration, and master of fine arts degrees. With campuses in Oakland and San Francisco, CCA currently enrolls more than 1,800 full-time students.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The design manager is responsible for the development and production of the college’s publications, including recruitment material and catalogs, posters, brochures, postcards, invitations, exhibition catalogs, books, email communications.

REPORTS TO: Vice President of Communications

DEPARTMENT: Communications

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Project management. Manages college’s publications process. Works with designers, writers, editors, and printers to produce printed material. Oversees publications to ensure the college is appropriately represented and standards are adhered to. Maintains production schedules and billing. Procures bids for print jobs. Makes mailing and distribution arrangements. Manages proposals and contracts with book distributor for college’s larger publications.
• Planning. Assists clients in developing their promotional materials, determining the most effective use of resources to reach a target audience. Works with marketing manager and editor to maintain consistent messaging. Assists in developing email calendar and communications.
• Design. Manages student design studio, Sputnik, with assistance from design faculty member. Assists students with print production, web and video projects, and editorial processes. Creates and manages email templates for the college. Occasional design projects and/or updates to existing design projects. Attends press checks.
• Production. Troubleshoots files and prepares them for print. Edits files and resizes for new and reprint jobs independently. Prepares files for transition to web presence. Responsible for updating/redesigning advertisements.
• Administrative. Maintains library of publications, photos, vendors, and paper samples. Works with clients and Business Office on billing. Keeps accurate records of past projects as both traditional files and digital files. Supervises work-study students to archive files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BA or equivalent and substantial experience working in design studio or publishing house. Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to work on deadline and manage multiple projects. Excellent design skills; and mastery of design programs, e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Acrobat Pro, Suitcase. Understanding of HTML and basic web/email design; thorough understanding of all aspects of the printing process, proofing, paper, font management. Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and volunteers; and a proven record of working cooperatively and flexibly as part of a team. Proficiency with Mac systems, word processing, and spreadsheet software required.

SALARY: $44 - $46,000 / annually, commensurate with experience, and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

The Junior Web-Designer supports our web development team in designing, maintaining and updating the look and functionality of our ADDY® award-winning website.
