Founded in 1998 by a coalition of youth, educators, and community leaders, Literacy for Environmental Justice addresses the ecological and health concerns of Bayview Hunters Point and the surrounding communities of southeast San Francisco. In 2010, we will be opening the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park—the first environmental justice education facility in the Bay Area and SF’s first completely off-grid building. www.lejyouth.org

Title: Development & Communications Coordinator
Compensation: $37,500-$40,000 DOE plus full benefits; LEJ's normal office hours are M-F 9:00-6:00, but some evening/weekend work is required for this position.

Scope of Responsibility:
Fund Development (55%)
* Provide resources to support Board-driven fundraising initiatives.
* With Deputy Director, research and write all grant proposals to private foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
* With Executive Director and Deputy Director, maintain relationships with LEJ’s funders, including ensuring regular meetings and site visits and responding to requests for reports and other information in a timely manner.
* Cultivate new funders, including actively seeking out opportunities for meetings and site visits.
* Support and grow strategic corporate partnerships, particularly around volunteer workdays and special events.
* Create and implement strategies for attracting and retaining individual supporters, including annual appeals, web-based giving, major donor development and special events.
* Acknowledge all donors via letters, phone calls, and/or face-to-face meetings as appropriate.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of individual giving and donor contact information.
* Maximize opportunities for increasing individual support through LEJ public events such as volunteer workdays, People’s Earthday, et al.

Communications (40%)
* Maintain regular institutional contact with LEJ constituencies; write, design, produce, and distribute newsletter and events calendar.
* Work with executive director to manage LEJ image and branding; write, design, and manage the production of informational and promotional pieces such as brochures and annual reports.
* Manage contacts with news media: write and distribute news releases, maintain up-to-date press list, develop and pitch feature story concepts to the media, and coordinate staff interviews.
* Monitor mentions of LEJ in the press and maintain up-to-date press archives.
* Maintain website: draft and/or edit copy for all pages; secure active participation and buy-in from board, staff, and youth. Identify and work with vendors to provide technical support as needed for website maintenance and functionality.
* Identify opportunities to expand LEJ's online visibility and impact through Web 2.0 techniques and vehicles such as blogs and social networking sites.
* Maintain LEJ’s databases, both in-house and with e-marketing vendors (i.e. myemma.com). Lead day-to-day database redesign project (Salesforce) in collaboration with Taproot Foundation volunteer team, January-June 2010.

General (5%)
* Share general office administration and maintenance with all other colleagues, including telephone and visitor reception, and cleaning of office common areas.
* Other projects and duties that may, from time to time, be assigned by the executive director.

* A passion for environmental and social justice
* Great writing skills; able to switch styles easily between formal grantswriting and lively newsletter copy
* A “people person” with natural aptitude and strong track record in special events planning and supporter cultivation
* Experience with donor databases
* Comfort working in a diverse and sometimes noisy youth-based workplace

Value Added:
* Professional experience and/or roots in southeast San Francisco or similar environmental justice community
* Successful track record placing stories in the news media
* Experience with web-based outreach and promotional strategies
* Successful track record working with graphic designers
* Experience with Salesforce database software
* Experience with Contribute web software
