Do you enjoy reading books about personal development & world betterment?

This book club gathers a diverse group of intelligent and caring people dedicated to personal growth and making the world a better place. It has become a nexus of meaningful connections, both personal & professional, and an incubator of world-bettering ideas.

Each meeting is limited to 8 participants. So far there are about 40 members who attend various weeks; most are professionals in their 20's - 40's, though other career paths and ages are welcome! :-)

Visitors are welcome as long as you RSVP through the invitation, which you can receive by replying via email with answers to the questions below.

The book club meets once or twice a month over dinner, and we meet at a restaurant in the Sunset neighborhood in San Francisco, near MUNI lines. Please read the vision statement below, and email me your response to the questions below to receive an invitation for the next meeting.

Book Club for Personal Development + World Betterment

Vision:
To gain inspiration and knowledge from great books -- and from each other -- on how to create and sustain positive changes in our lives and our world. The focus is on applying what we learn, rather than just discussing theory.

Origin:
The idea for the club originated from the story of a business manager who asked her staff to create a list of 30 - 40 books they think are important. Every month each of the 6 staff reads a different book and reports on it to the others. This way they all learn the essence of 72 new books a year. (from Love is the Killer App, p.86-87)

Plan:

At each book club meeting, 2 books (1 on personal development, and 1 on world betterment) are briefly presented by the presenters, and the group discusses how to apply that knowledge to our lives and our world.

Each member only needs to read and present at most 1 book every 8 weeks -- yet if you attend the club once a month you will have the opportunity to learn from 24 books each year that relate to personal development and/or a better world.

One of the unique aspects of this book club is that each member reads different books (books that speak most to her/him) and present what they read to the group. It keeps the club interesting!

Again, the intention of this group is to inspire greater passion, and clarity of direction in our lives, for the purpose of creating a better world.

If interested, please email me with the following:

Describe briefly your interest in personal development as well as world betterment--what are some topics, ideas, paths, or practices that interest you?

What do you do for a living?

Can you commit to reading and presenting on 1 book (on personal development and/or world betterment) every 8 weeks?

If you'd like, list a couple of books regarding personal development and/or bettering the world that you'd like the group to present & discuss.

Note: we are looking for members who care about both "personal development" and "world betterment" topics.

You can learn about me, the founder and organizer of the book clubs, here: GeorgeKao.com

Testimonials:

"The book club is everything I had hoped for and more: knowledge, intellectual stimulation, community, shared wisdom, and comraderie. Not only is it a place to learn, it's a place to grow. Since leaving graduate school I have missed this kind of environment, and I am grateful to have this space where real discourse is possible."
~ Joanie

"This is a group that brings together all the things I look
for in a weekend — inspiration, wisdom, advice, references, and
opportunities to build new and stronger friendships. For all these
qualities to come together is so rare in any group that I’ve ever been
in — and for this one it just seems to happen naturally. I’m always
looking forward to next time!"
~ Alex

"It is really heartening to see there are other successful professionals
who, despite the daily competitive grind, are committed to social change. The people in the group had wonderful ideas and the energy they brought to the meeting renews my faith in the human spirit."
~ Hassan

"The book club exceeded my expectations. The other members were friendly and inviting; George was warm and well prepared and the conversation was interesting and fun. I was interested in all of the books that were brought to the table and I liked the initial questions we used to introduce ourselves. I felt at home right away and I’m really looking forward to attending the next meeting."
~Suzie
The Mankind Project (MKP) is an organization of men dedicated to supporting each other in our journeys of self-exploration so that we can fully serve our communities, our families and ourselves. Men in MKP often experienced one or more of the following before joining us:

•	An inability to trust, or even like, other men
•	Feelings of isolation, especially from other men
•	Unresolved issues with our fathers and mothers
•	Difficult issues with a partner
•	Loss of boyish enthusiasm and fun

We offer you a chance to look deeper into your life and make healthy choices about your future; we empower each other to realize our full potential so that we can be loving and powerful fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and members of our community. We welcome all men of any age, race, spiritual practice and sexual preference.

MKP has circles of men throughout the Bay Area that sit together either weekly or bi-weekly. We’re a non-profit organization that doesn’t charge dues; some of the circles request a nominal fee for rental of the space, others meet in men’s homes and don’t have fees. Most of the circles require that you attend an MKP weekend training before you can join.

We have two circles that meet in San Francisco and we’re jointly hosting an Open House on Thursday, September 18th from 7:30 – 9:00. Current and former members of the group will be there to discuss what brought us to MKP and how it’s affected our lives.

We hope you’ll join us!

Aikido - May the Force be within YOU

Aikido, “The way of harmony,” is a non-violent, non-resisting martial discipline. To the untrained eye it appears as if one has supernatural abilities in the art of self-defense. This is an exaggeration of the truth. Anyone can study and practice Aikido.

The essence of Aikido technique is spherical motion around a stable and dynamic center. Aikido is known for its graceful techniques, swift yet seemingly effortless. Effective application is the result of precise timing, leverage, and the correct use of force. The ultimate aim is personal transformation. However, the focus of the dojo (training hall) is practical. Repetition and hard work are required to master the basic fundamentals of training.

Aikido places great emphasis on the dynamics of motion and movement. On a purely mechanical level, Aikido is an art involving balance, timing, joint locks, physical controls, pins, immobilization, and the science, physics, and mechanics of the human body and mind.

Yoshinkai Aikido is one of many samurai martial disciplines imbuing not only applicable physical self-defense, but philosophy, humanism, self-perfection, sincerity in action, in daily life and societal relationships.

The friendly environment of the Aikido dojo makes learning this fantastic art a great way to meet new people and make friends.
Anyone who is at all interested is welcome to come to meetings and contribute. There are going to be all sorts of opportunities to help out so it really doesn't matter what your skills are, just that you are committed to an overflowing abundance of joy and inspiration in your community!
For women who know they need to stop drinking

If you are a woman who knows she needs to stop drinking, and for whatever reason 12-step programs aren’t for you (or if you simply want support in addition to another program), you are invited to check out our San Francisco meeting of Women for Sobriety (WFS). Little dogma, lots of conversation. We laugh immoderately.

We are an abstinence-based secular group: We believe you have the power within you to stop drinking and change your life. We observe a harm reduction approach. This means that you don’t have to achieve ongoing sobriety before coming to our meetings. By learning from relapses, we can make one time we stumble the last one.

We used to have a sign posted outside our door reading, "For the comfort of all our members, we request that you leave any shame you are carrying outside the meeting room." We still mean it. Compared to men, women who drink experience disproportionate guilt and shame. Let's move on and get sober!

We are part of a national organization (http://www.womenforsobriety.org/), but uniquely San Francisco in our makeup: queer, straight, old, young. Our meetings follow a “cross-talk” format that you can see by going to the website above. The theoretical basis of WFS is cognitive-behavioral therapy, which research has shown to be the most useful technique with overcoming addictions.

We meet on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m. You will be asked to identify yourself by your first name and declare that you are a competent woman. Other than that, you can sit and say nothing or participate fully. There are no fees, though we accept small donations for the national organization.

If you’re interested, please go the website above and decide whether WFS might be an organization that would suit you. Then call Jean Taylor, the S.F. volunteer moderator, for the address of our meetings (415) 282-9398.

Youi're invited to join us
on the first and third Sunday of the month

Every ride starts with a7:30
a.m. open A.A.
breakfast meeting at the Alano Club
in San
Francisco, followed immediatly at 9:00 a.m. with the ride. Breakfast is
six bucks and the meeting lasts an
hour. The route is pre-planned with a leader and a sweeper, so just
print a map from our home page
and enjoy the ride. Faster riders are free to go on ahead; wave as you
pass us and we'll assume you know the way. You don't ride so fast?
Don't worry. Ride at a pace you're comfortable with and rest easy
knowing the sweep is happily bringing up the rear so no one gets left
behind. We typically ride 200 to 250 miles a day and stop every 90
miles or so to refuel, stretch our legs and shoot the breeze. There's a
midday stop for lunch (we avoid fast food joints in favor of sit-down
restaurants), and we're usually home by dusk. Don't want to stick
around all day? No problem. Cut out any time. Just let us know you're
leaving so we don't think you're lost.

 How fast do you
ride? Will I be able to keep up? Or are you all slowpokes who'll keep
me waiting at every intersection?

This is another common question, and often a big
concern among new riders. We've got some fast riders. We've got some
slow riders. Most are somewhere in between. Everyone rides at his or
her own pace, and NO ONE is left behind. Every ride has a designated
sweeper who happily brings up the rear, and we've found that even the
slowest riders are rarely more than 5 minutes behind the leader. We
move along at a steady pace, regroup whenever there's a change in the
route and make regular stops for gas. You won't get left behind, and no
one's gonna think you're too slow.

 What
sort of
experience should I have?

We'd prefer that you have at
least a year's
experience and a couple of hundred miles on your bike. Please don't
show up the day after you buy a new motorcycle; it's better if you've
taken some time to get used to it before riding in a group. You should
have a thorough understanding of riding basics - cornering,
controlled stops, riding on rough roads and handing a motorcycle in all
weather conditions.

 What
happens if I break down?

Everyone should make sure his
or her bike is
in solid condition before riding, which means making sure your tires
are properly inflated and have good tread, your brakes are in working
order, your chain is clean and lubed, you've got enough oil and there's
nothing obviously wrong with your ride. Do at least that much and your
chance of breaking down is greatly diminished. Everyone also should
have the tool kit that came with the motorcycle when it was new, plus
an assortment of zipties, a tire patch kit and a cell phone. We've got
enough experienced riders in the group that we can probably get you
going if it's a minor problem. If it's something we can't fix, we'll
make sure you and your bike get home safely.

What happens if I
crash?

We're not going to lie to you - we've had riders go down. It's rare,
and serious crashes are rarer still, but it has happened. In the event
someone goes down, the entire group stops. If the rider is OK and the
bike rideable, we'll continue on our way. If the bike is too damaged to
ride, at least one or two people will stay with the rider and his or
her bike to make sure they get home safely. In a worst case scenario
where a rider is seriously injured, at least one or two people will
wait for police and/or paramedics to arrive, then accompany the rider
to the hospital while another member of the group tends to the
motorcycle. We've got a handy "vehicle release form" (download it here)
that you can use to designate a "guardian" for your motorcycle so the
CHP does not impound it. We recommend you carry one in your tank bag.
We want to stress that
accidents are very rare, but we
want newcomers to know we have a protocol for dealing with them.

generally runs $10-12 per person. Make sure you've got

Gear: A helmet, gloves, boots and a jacket are suggested. Please print

The San Francisco Fibromyalgia (FM) and Chronic Fatigue
Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) Self-Help and Advocacy Group meets on the 2nd Saturday every month, 2-4pm. The next meeting will be Saturday, September 13, 2-4pm.

those who think they may have one of these disorders. Friends and family are also welcome. Observers, such as healthcare providers, may attend if they identify themselves as such. Observers are invited to listen and learn, but advice-giving and self-promotion are not acceptable.

level B. Parking in the garage is free. Take a ticket when you enter and

insert it into the slot when you leave. You will not be charged. Sometimes a ticket is not given when entering. If that is the case, you still won't be charged. Public transportation: N, J, 22, 24, 6, 7, 66, 71. Wheelchair accessible.

This is a ***FRAGRANCE FREE*** meeting. And please DO NOT come to the meeting if you are CONTAGIOUS.

Those who come are encouraged to stand, walk around, or whatever they need to do, in order to be comfortable. Bring a sheet if you need to lay down.

Our group purpose is multi-fold. The main reason we meet is for emotional

support, but self-help, education, and political advocacy go hand-in-hand.

Our focus will be on what we CAN do to improve our health and functionality.

Our medical treatment options may be limited, but what we can do about it is NOT. We do this in the following ways:

· by supporting each other, and sharing our experiences, strength, and hope

· by sharing information about doctors, health care providers, and other

resources

· by using political advocacy to increase research into treatments, and

raise awareness about FM

· and by following the CFIDS and FM Self-Help program created by Bruce

Campbell
The meeting adopts part of it's format from the CFIDS/FM Self-Help Support
Group format, based in cognitive behavioral therapy and created by Bruce
Campbell Ph.D. Here is Campbell's description of the program:

FM changes every part of our lives: how much we can do, our ability to work,
our moods, our relationships, our finances, our hopes and dreams, and our
sense of who we are. Adding to the challenge is the fact that it is a
chronic illness, with no cure or standard medical treatment. Living with
this illness can often feel overwhelming and discouraging.

The CFIDS & FM Self-Help program was developed as a response. The program
is based on belief in the value of self-help: we can learn how to feel
better and increase our chances for recovery by taking responsibility for
the parts of our illness over which we have control. It is also based on
belief in the power of groups: we can help ourselves and one another by
meeting to discuss our experience, and share hope and support with one
another.

We believe there is much we can do to limit the effects of symptoms, to

bring predictability, and to improve quality of life. Strategies include:

- finding and accepting the limits imposed by the illness

- pacing ourselves through balancing activity and rest

- reducing the stresses in our lives

- using medications

- nurturing ourselves through positive and pleasurable experiences

- sustaining ourselves through supportive relationships

- maintaining a positive outlook ***

There is always sharing in the first part of the meeting. What we do in the

second part will always change. Possibilities. Workshops; general

discussions; reading; FM awareness day activities, including letter writing

campaigns, and interviews with the media; show and tell (bring in something

that you have found helpful, i.e. massage tools, a special kind of heating

pad); potluck; poetry/literature reading; topic discussion; speaker;

planning meetings with local elected officials.

Please make an effort to be on time to the meeting, as late arrivals can be

disruptive, especially to those who are sharing. It's better that you come

to the meeting late, than not at all, but please make a concerted effort to

come on time.

Signs of Compulsive Debting:

1. Being unclear about your financial situation. Not knowing account balances, monthly expenses, loan interest rates, fees, fines, or contractual obligations.

2. Frequently "borrowing" items such as books, pens, or small amounts of money from friends and others, and failing to return them.

3. Poor saving habits. Not planning for taxes, retirement or other not-recurring but predictable items, and then feeling surprised when they come due; a "live for today, don't worry about tomorrow" attitude."

4. Compulsive shopping: Being unable to pass up a "good deal"; making impulsive purchases; leaving price tags on clothes so they can be returned; not using items you've purchased.

5. Difficulty in meeting basic financial or personal obligations, and/or an inordinate sense of accomplishment when such obligations are met.

6. A different feeling when buying things on credit than when paying cash, a feeling of being in the club, of being accepted, of being grown up.

7. Living in chaos and drama around money: Using one credit card to pay another; bouncing checks; always having a financial crisis to contend with.

8. A tendency to live on the edge: Living paycheck to paycheck; taking risks with health and car insurance coverage; writing checks hoping money will appear to cover them.

9. Unwarranted inhibition and embarrassment in what should be a normal discussion of money.

10. Overworking or underearning: Working extra hours to earn money to pay creditors; using time inefficiently; taking jobs below your skill and education level.

11. An unwillingness to care for and value yourself: Living in self-imposed deprivation; denying your basic needs in order to pay your creditors.

12. A feeling or hope that someone will take care of you if necessary, so that you won't really get into serious financial trouble, that there will always be someone you can turn to.

Master H.L. Schauer founded the Shaolin Wudang Association to teach practical martial arts to dedicated and mindful people in the local community. Training at the school includes traditional Kung Fu (Northern Shaolin, Hung Gar and Wing Chun), Daoist arts (Tai Chi, Ba Gua and Xing Yi), practical self defense techniques like grappling, defense against weapons, and many other skills synthesized from the best martial arts sources around the world. Members of the school gain strength and confidence with an emphasis on mental, physical and spiritual balance as well as a strong social ethic of awareness, compassion and fairness.

The lessons serve as a path toward real personal development in terms of physical ability, mental awareness and spiritual growth. The learning environment is welcoming to all types of people, young and old, fast or slow, and can provide a much needed network of honest hardworking people with integrity and values that support eachother. Combine the best exercise in the world, realistic self defense technique and solid philosophical and ethical foundations and you have the Shaolin Wudang Association.
Rates are very reasonable considering the level of training, and are determined on a sliding scale based on income. Come visit a class(see website for schedule) or contact Master Schauer at (415) 564-9282 and email: swakungfu@gmail.com.

Hey everyone...so about three months ago I started posting ads on Craigslist to see what other people out there might be going through the same shift in consciousness that I was going through based on the Eckhart Tolle books. To my surprise, there were a ton of likeminded people and a group was then established called A Good Idea (www.agoodideasf.org). As the group kept having more and more meetings where we'd often discuss the Tolle books and watching Eckhart Tolle seminars, the group began to have an interest in taking our newfound awareness and presence and sharing it with the world. A few weeks ago we had our 1st big event called Intentional Acts of Kindness. You can read about it here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/08/03/BAMT124BEE.DTL

We meet weekly and plan to have many more events coming up in the near future. We will be having our next meeting next Tuesday, September 9th, at 6:30pm. We will be meeting at the Red Vic Peace Cafe located at 1665 Haight St. (at Cole). We'll be dicussing the idea of Scarcity vs. Abundance and also have a brief discussion on a passage from one of the Eckhart Tolle books.

This group is filled with amazing, smart, driven people who want to make great changes in the world. If you are interested in checking it out please feel free to call me at (415) 806-5116 or email me at jmp1930@hotmail.com and I'll add you to the evite.
THE TRIPLE PUPOSE OF LIFE:
We live not in one world but in three worlds.

a) SPIRIT: The upperworld journey is a path of transcendence: where we transcend the boundaries of our everyday personalities to experience non-separation from all of existence. In the upperworld dimension of our being we experience ourselves as the Spirit that moves through all things. Through the practice of meditation we can attain spiritual realization: the recognition of the limitless/timeless dimension of our being.

b) SOUL: The lowerworld journey is a path of decendence: a burrowing down into our depths where we encounter soul, which depth psychologist Bill Plotkin describes as, “The deepest core of your human nature, the reason spirit has taken shape as you, and the essence of your specific life purpose.” Through soul work practices we can become soul embodied human beings, thereby fulfilling our deepest longings while serving the human and more-than human realms.

c) BODY/MIND: In the realm of the body/mind we engage in multiple practices: shadow work to restore emotional balance, relational work to bring harmony to our interactions, physical exercise to strengthen our bodies, and reading/lectures to stimulate and expand our minds.

Come join this Free Introductory class Wed Sept 10th!

Are there any other youngish women (I'm 38) in SF who are into these old-fashioned handicrafts? It would be fun to get together and chat while we work, or trade fabrics, or just share tips. Any takers?

If you are looking for a good form of exercise, learning about self defense, or just interested in the martial arts then this style might be what you've been searching for. Drop-ins are welcome. It is non-competitive and offers a compelling way to train the whole body in a harmonious way by improving muscles, cardio, coordination, and balance. Our class is small, which means more personal attention, but space is limited. Looking for dedicated students at any level from beginner, intermediate to advance. So drop by and see if you like the class. No obligation to join. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us.

A little about what we do in class (may vary depending on skill level): kicks, punches, sets, hand and weapon sparring. We have 5 different animals in our system: Crane, Tiger, Snake, Leopard, and Dragon. A few weapons in our system are staff, sword, and saber.

We practice in the basement, so the lights upstairs are usually off. Just walk in and come down to the basement.

M4M Monogamy Group, a Place to Meet other Monogamous Men (san francisco)

Geoff's Cab

A straight friend who drove cab in SF, until he retired from years of careful real estate investing (damn he's good), told me on many occasions about the socially wounded gay men who would ride home in the back of his cab.

Really the most shocking stories he told were of the "beautiful" gay men who would cry all the way home from the Castro, as my friend drove them. Usually their emotional agony had to do with becoming "jaded old queens", decades before aging physically.

How so? I think the heart withers in a gay ghetto culture that quite actively (oh yes-) shames: closeness, monogamy and commitment in favor of sex on drugs (or while drunk), with as many throw-away partners as possible.

It is in the spirit of offering a real alternative to the above, that our group was begun as a place for: gay and bisexual men, 18 and older, who value monogamous companionship; our friends, family, and supporters.

While the majority of our membership lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, all monogamous gay and bisexual men are welcome to join.

This is a free photo personals site helping individual monogamous gay/bi men find one another.

There are no group meetings.

Some will join to screen-out non-monogamous partners, in the course of finding a close companion.

All can bring the value of personal experience and a willingness to support and learn on the spiritual path of monogamous companionship.

This is not a place to challenge monogamy. Here it is simply a principal, without attachment to any particular organized religion.

Now with over 480 members, just as with our 300+ member yahoo m4m monogamy group, this has primarily become a group that monogamous gay/bi men can silently join in order to "neon sign" to other gay/bi men: "Hey! I'm monogamous. Are you?"

We are located on a free community website. Unfortunately craigslist does not allow the posting of free community website URLs. So if you would like the group's online address, just reply to this post and I will send it along.

Cheers,

In the last 11 years, the Marin Association of Female Executives (MAFE) has grown to be the premier networking organization in the San Francisco Bay Area. Incorporated in 1996, MAFE is a diverse group of energetic, accomplished, multi-talented women in business. We create and develop business and personal relationships; and we support, encourage, refer, inform as well as enjoy and participate in MAFE activities. Our members come to us from all over the Bay Area - you do not have to be a Marin resident to join MAFE.

MAFE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to Women Executives. MAFE is committed to assisting all women in their personal and professional development through networthing, mentoring and education.

MAFE generally meets the last Monday night of each month (except holidays) from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a dinner event. Spend an evening with smart, dynamic, and interesting businesswomen. Come and connect with new contacts and renew relationships with old contacts, building relationships that can help your business and, at the same time, finding women who share your interests and experiences.

This is an opportunity to get to know entrepreneurial and corporate executive women with unique skills and services…or to find the right resource for business needs…or to meet new friends who have similar hobbies and interests. MAFE is about creating relationships…and these meetings are structured in a way that will give women the time to create new meaningful relationships and prosperous business contacts.

We need this man to set it straight, he has no bankers or financiers to tell him what to believe or do. He is on the right track about the economy, the war, politics and the beliefs or the American people. He may be republican but that doesn't mean he acts like one. Look at his website, do your research, find out what this man is all about. I will leave it up to you to make the decision; you can choose a democracy or a dictatorship. I am voting for Ron Paul ! ! ! NOW ! ! ! It's time for us Americans to take back our RIGHTS and Ron Paul is going to help us do that.
