Visitors interact daily with animals, educators, and biologists within immersive, hands-on exhibits. And the research collections that form our foundation do not just sit in storage; they are used in cutting edge research about biodiversity and sustainability.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of both the Naturalist Center Manager & Senior Educator and the Naturalist Center Manager & Reference Librarian, the Naturalist Center Interpreter is responsible for assisting with facilitating educational experiences for the general public, providing basic public service to the Naturalist Center visitor, and providing support to the Naturalist Center. This is a part-time, on-call position and is not eligible for benefits.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Assist in facilitating Naturalist Center experiences focused on Academy’s exhibits, research and sustainability
Set-up and clean-up educational materials
Help stock educational supplies and assist staff with preparation of educational materials
Basic Public Service and NC support
Meet and greet public visitors and school groups
Help visitors locate materials, use computers, microscopes and hand lenses
Clean glass cases (inside and out) and dust specimen cabinets/bookshelves
Reshelve books
Help maintain Naturalist Center natural history and library collections
Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays in the Naturalist Center
Follow all Academy safety regulations
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or experience to succeed in this position:
High school degree required. Bachelors or Associate degree (completed or in progress) preferred
Knowledge of biological science, education or related fields is preferred but not required
Experience teaching or working with the public is highly desirable but not required
Knowledge,Skills & Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member with other staff and volunteers as well as independently
Ability to relate well to children of varying ages as well as adults
Commitment to public education
Ability to work independently as a part of a service oriented professional team
Strong commitment to the preservation of biological diversity
Comfortable using both Mac and PC platforms
Familiarity with or wiliness to learn the use of library databases
Experience locating and using Internet resources
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
