ETR Associates, a private, non-profit, health education organization, is seeking a qualified person to join its Center for Youth Success (C4YS) as Community Organizer.
Education, Training and Research (ETR) Associates is a national center for publications, training, research and clearinghouse services in family life, and comprehensive health education, substance abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention and tobacco use education and prevention. ETR’s Publishing Division publishes and distributes curricula, books and pamphlets in these areas for schools, clinics and youth-serving organizations across the country.
SUMMARY
Reporting to the Animando a Estudiantes con Technología (AET) Project Coordinator, the Community Organizer implements the Parent Engagement and Leadership (PEAL) component of this National Science Foundation-funded project. AET provides information technology (IT) education for youth ages 10–18 in three schools in the Pájaro Valley Unified School District’s Extended Learning Program (PVUSD ELP). The Community Organizer will facilitate a process by which community stakeholders become leaders on the issue of youth IT education by helping them learn about how youth are currently using IT, determine the importance of IT education for youth in their community, assess the IT education resources/programs and gaps in resources/programs available for their youth, create and communicate messages to the community about the issue, and generate resources for youth programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Design the Parent Engagement and Leadership (PEAL) component of AET.
• Serve as lead communicator with AET youth participants’ parents and other adult caregivers.
• Recruit a community leadership community (CLC) comprised primarily of parents of youth from project-involved schools that is culturally representative of the AET program community which involves members in a meaningful, respectful, safe, and empowering manner.
• Assist the CLC in determining a leadership structure and operating guidelines.
• Run CLC meetings in both English and Spanish.
• Develop, coordinate and/or deliver briefings and trainings to the CLC on relevant topics.
• Facilitate the CLC’s completion of a community assessment or community map defining the strengths, resources, and gaps in youth IT education in the community.
• Facilitate the CLC’s creation and communication of a position statement and other community-wide messages on youth IT education.
• Develop, prepare for, coordinate and implement CLC activities in both English and Spanish.
• Prepare and conduct communications and learning activities on an online learning management system.
• Assist with the coordination of project evaluation activities.
• Assist in development of project reports and in dissemination of project findings.

• Maintains complete and accurate documentation of project activities.

• Understands public education policies and procedures related to after-school program.
• Actively supports the project research and evaluation processes.
• Creates and maintains effective relationships and communications with other project staff, parents and other community stakeholders, district personnel and program youth.
• Develops and delivers high-quality assessments of areas of responsibility and makes practical and innovative recommendations for improvement.
• Functions as a positive and effective representative of the Center for Youth Success, ETR Associates and any funders of projects to which he or she is assigned.
• Manages a diverse set of complex tasks.
• Adheres to agency policies and procedures.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Maintains a valid driver’s license and access to a registered, properly insured personal vehicle for project business.
QUALIFICATIONS
• 3+ years of professional experience in community organizing or related profession (e.g. designing and implementing parent programs) OR Bachelor’s degree in Community Studies, Education, Public Health, Social Work, Psychology or other related field AND at least two years of experience in community organizing or related profession.
• Bilingual Spanish and English.
• Strong leadership skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral communication and writing skills.
• Experience with, and sensitivity to, adults and youth from different cultures.
• Familiarity with the Watsonville, CA community.
• Familiarity with PVUSD’s schools, faculty, staff and administration, or a demonstrable capacity to quickly acquire knowledge of these subjects.
• Familiarity with issues related to youth’s use of IT and their development of IT knowledge and skills or a demonstrable capacity to quickly acquire knowledge of these subjects.
• Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
• Competence with internet technology, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Must have personal vehicle, valid driver’s license and proof of current insurance, and be willing to travel to local project sites and other locations as necessary.
Salary Range: $20.62 – $22.91 per hour, DOE. 50% time. Grade level 4. Non-exempt.
