Summer Science Instructor (santa cruz)

The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth is looking for an instructor to teach the course Principles of Engineering Design to academically talented 7th - 10th graders in Santa Cruz, CA at UC Santa Cruz. The dates of employment are July 18 - August 8. This is a residential program for students and staff. Exceptions can be made for local candidates. We provide our staff with a salary, room, and board. Salary for the position is base on experience but ranges from $2100 - $3000 per three week session (this is an opening for one three-week sessions). We can provide some curricular support for teaching the course. If you are interested, please respond to this posting with a resume, and if possible an unofficial transcript. Below is information about the position and the course.

Description of the Position:

Summer programs instructors are responsible for teaching an appropriately challenging and rigorous course to approximately 15-18 highly able students (12-14 in Young Students classes). Instructors' primary responsibilities are to plan and conduct their classes and labs within our guidelines, to monitor the progress of each of their students, and to supervise their assistants (there is one assistant for each instructor).

Instructors' daily working hours are class times (which includes some evening sessions at 7th Grade and Above sites) and additional class planning and preparation time as needed. At residential sites, instructors are responsible for Sunday evening class sessions, and working the opening weekend, some of intersession, and the closing weekend when all staff must remain on campus to assist with student arrival and departure. Otherwise, instructors do not have scheduled responsibilities on the weekends.

Terms of Employment:

Starting salary is $2100 - $3000 per three week session, based on experience.
Employees pay their travel to and from domestic program locations
For residential program employees, room and board are provided

Desired Qualifications:

Teaching experience, preferably with children or adolescents
Graduate course work in the appropriate field with a GPA of 3.2 or better
Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
Maturity, responsibility, and creativity

Course Description

Students in this course work primarily in teams to solve real-world and simulated problems in the field of engineering. Case studies of real-world engineering projects are used to demonstrate principles of design. As examples, students may analyze the failing O-ring on the space shuttle Challenger to investigate how components in a system function together and the significance of manufacturing tolerances. Or they may review the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse to understand how inadequate knowledge of materials and insufficient testing can lead to failure.

Student teams also construct and test their own working models and prototypes, such as suspension or truss bridges, solar-powered cars, electrical circuits, or gliders. They learn the physics behind their designs, covering aspects of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, fluids, or optics.

As a part of the engineering design process, students create decision matrices that help them weigh economic and ethical considerations along with technological ones. Students submit written reports for review. They leave the class with a broader view of the field of engineering and deeper understanding of the day-to-day work of engineers. Moreover, they leave with skills and knowledge that they can apply to creating innovations or developing solutions to real-world engineering challenges in their own lives and communities.
