Metro Silicon Valley is a weekly newspaper published in San Jose since 1985. Its coverage of news and the arts has garnered dozens of awards from CNPA and others. Its online division, Boulevards New Media, has been online since 1993, and operates a national network of city guides, including SanJose.com, SanFrancisco.com, LosAngeles.com and Seattle.com.
Our internship program requires a 12-week commitment of 20 hours per week. Because we cover a lot of territory, from hard news to in-depth arts features to online work in 20-plus cities, we can generally tailor the internship to suit each student’s educational goals.
In order to ensure the educational benefit of the internship, we work with each student to set goals at the outset. These include quantifiable, specific targets and also broader educational objectives. Students work closely with experienced professional journalists, and are given feedback throughout the internship and at its conclusion.
Students participating in the internship can count on working hard and learning a lot, and many walk away with some serious experience and some good clips.
These are the positions that will be opening up shortly:
NEWS REPORTING INTERNSHIP, LOS GATOS OBSERVER
This will involve hardcore, hands-on reporting—attending city council and planning commission meetings, filing police reports, profiling businesses, etc. The student’s work will appear on the LosGatosObserver.com and SanJose.com. The intern will work with reporters Colleen Watson and Jessica Fromm and News Editor Eric Johnson.
MARKETING INTERNSHIP, METRO / METROACTIVE
Students and recent graduates participating in this internship program will help Metro and Metroactive develop a creative marketing program from the ground up. In addition, Metro is assembling a “Street Team” to attend events, concerts and clubs throughout Silicon Valley, spreading the word about our print and online products, and gathering data about readers and potential readers.
PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNSHIP
We are looking for photographers who are serious about improving their skills and getting exposure. The intern will learn how to shoot for an established online city guide. The intern will learn photography for music events, festivals, local businesses, and nightclubs. Your work will be published in Metro Silicon Valley and on Metroactive. You will be working with Metro photographer Felipe Buitrago.
A successful candidate will have the following:
∑ Your own reliable equipment
∑ A willingness to shoot rain or shine, night or day
∑ A serious interest in photography
∑ Some experience in taking live photography of music events, festivals, local businesses and / or nightclubs.
∑ Your own reliable transportation
∑ Experience with Photoshop
∑ Access to the Internet
∑ A well developed sense of responsibility
∑ Organizational skills (Must be able to plan two weeks ahead and turn around edited images within 1-2 days)
∑ A team-player attitude—fun and creative
∑ Determination to improve your skills.

This is a short-term contract job. There may be ongoing part-time work. You can work remotely.

MUST HAVE
• Extensive experience writing and editing marketing and technical content for web sites, with a portfolio you can share
• Ability to write and edit information, marketing (no hard sell), and technical material with clarity and verve
• Ability to think from customers’ perspective
• Attention to detail -- e.g. grammar, proofing, and making sure material is consistent.
• Excellent organizational skills to manage project tasks and work with the team
• Basic skills using writing software, web tools, CMS, but you don’t need to be an html or Dreamweaver guru.
NICE TO HAVE
• Skills and experience in finding or creating, editing, and formatting graphics and images.
• Experience conducting simple and rapid usability testing.
• Experience of quantitative analysis and modeling – e.g. a degree in science or engineering
• Technical knowledge of energy, environment, and sustainability issues
