General Job Descriptions:
Hazardous Waste Specialist, FT, Permanent
• Provide technical expertise in characterizing hazardous waste for proper disposal options.
• Input and Maintain the Hazardous Waste Tracking database.
• Prioritize the collection/pickup of hazardous waste from ARC and Resident Partner (RP) facilities.
• Schedule trucks for transportation of hazardous waste to disposal facilities.
• Oversee the transport, temporary storage, manifesting and disposal of hazardous waste from ARC and RP facilities.
• Oversee any required sampling for hazardous waste characterization.
• Prepare labpacks and hazardous waste containerization in compliance with D.O.T. requirements.
• Responsible for the ordering of supplies, tools and materials needed to provide required services and operate the Hazardous Waste Storage and Transfer Facility (HWSTF).
• Provide oversight for maintenance of all vehicles used in the daily operations of the HWSTF.
• Prepare and maintain all required reports, records and documentation including waste profiles, manifests, land ban forms, bills of lading, etc.
• Provide waste management labels, packaging materials, guidance and advice to waste generators.
• Generate monthly hazardous waste activity summaries
• Participate in and provide support for the ER team.
• Attend meetings with customers/generators as required.
• Teach the Hazardous Waste & Environmental Essentials Class (5-6 times annually).
• Prepare cost estimate for waste disposal services as required by the manager.
• Maintain the Ames Chemical Exchange (ACE) and Central Chemical Storage Facility (CCSF) Inventory.
• Supervise weekly inspection for compliance with all regulations.
• Ensure compliance with all pertinent hazardous waste regulations.
• Maintain training to meet regulatory and job requirements.
• Other tasks, as directed by manager.

Qualifications:

• Minimum: AS/AA degree in Chemistry or related discipline. BS degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related discipline preferred.
• At least 2 to 5 years experience in the management of hazardous waste operations including experience as a hazardous waste “chem pack”, lead or supervisor.
• 40-hr HAZWOPER training certificate.
• DOT Transportation training.
• Must possess a valid California Driver License.
• Will be required to lift, pull or carry items of size and weight up to 50 lbs. commensurate with job requirements.
• Must be a self motivated starter who can effectively and assertively communicate with customers, management, employees, military personnel and civil servants both verbally and in writing.
• Basic computer skills required including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the Internet and Email programs.
• Must be a US Citizen

GIS Intern
Student to aid personnel in becoming fluent in GIS through on-the-job use of ArcView software.
Seeking an individual to provide GIS and CAD support for a variety of environmental remediation projects. The position will support the work of staff engineers and scientists with varying levels of expertise. Duties will include data development and editing (geodatabases/shapefiles), georeferencing/integration of CAD data, integration of field-collected GPS data, and presentation of environmental sampling and analytical results figures. Pay based on student level and hours worked. Must be US Citizen.
