Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to more than 1500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities.
Recently, our employment and training department partnered with San Jose City College (SJCC) to develop an intensive entry level Solar Panel Installation Training and Certification Program. The training and certification program will last 8 weeks and includes the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification. This certification is nationally recognized and will qualify each student for employment in the growing green economy.
In addition, we are working with local "green" employers to place our Veterans, after they complete the training, into a position where they can use their skills in the green workforce. Our program will help to ease their transition from active duty military service into a civilian career. The eligibility criteria are as follows:
• **MUST HAVE SEPERATED FROM THE MILITARY AFTER SEPTEMBER 11 2001**
• Possess a DD-214
• Possess a state issued driver's license or identification
• Possess a social security card
• Are physically able to install solar panels
• Can pass a basic Math and Reading assessment test
• Are looking to launch into one of the fastest growing industries
We are currently enrolling students for the San Jose City College training program, which begins January 19th, 2010.
We are holding two orientations for the training program at San Jose City College; they are scheduled as follows:

The PV Solar installation and NABCEP certification Training Program at San Jose City College begins January 19th, 2010 and will end March 13th, 2010.
In addition to our green job training program, Swords to Plowshares offers other services to all Veterans, such as:
Health and Social Services
Swords to Plowshares’ drop-in center provides emergency shelter, mental health services and referrals to homeless veterans.
Transitional and Permanent Supportive Housing
Swords to Plowshares’ transitional housing programs provides rehabilitation and counseling to veterans in need. This includes recovery, mental health and geriatric programming.
Employment and Training
Through direct training and job referrals, Swords to Plowshares helps veterans re-enter the workforce.
Legal
Swords to Plowshares’ legal department provides free attorney representation and advocacy to veterans seeking benefits.
Iraq Veterans Project
Launched in 2005 to make sure systems of care are appropriate, sufficient and accessible to meet the needs of veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the needs of their families as well.
