A man convicted of three muggings in Queens, including an attack on a 101-year-old woman, was sentenced on Wednesday to 75 years in prison.
In imposing the sentence, Justice Gregory L. Lasak of State Supreme Court in Queens lashed out at the defendant, Jack Rhodes, 47, for preying on older women, and noted that his sentence added up to almost one year for every dollar he stole from his victims. Prosecutors also read a statement from his oldest victim, Rose Morat, now 103, whose assault was captured on surveillance tape and led to an intense hunt for her attacker.
Ms. Morat said in the statement, “Atrocities done frequently by the man Jack Rhodes must be stopped,” adding, “so that this will never happen again to other good people and life once again can be enjoyed without fear.”
Mr. Rhodes was convicted in October of robbery, burglary and assault, and had been facing up to 90 years because the assaults were classified as hate crimes as a result of the victims’ ages. His lawyer, Paul Montgomery, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Wednesday night.
Mr. Rhodes’s mugging spree began on Dec. 30, 2006, when he attacked Angela Kahn, 51 at the time, punching and kicking her in her Jamaica building before fleeing with some of her property.
In March 2007, Mr. Rhodes approached Ms. Morat in the lobby of her Jamaica Estates building, offering to help her outside as she walked toward the door using a walker. A moment later, he hit her repeatedly in the head, ripping her pocketbook from her arm as she fell to the ground. Mr. Rhodes got away with about $33 and Ms. Morat’s house keys.
“I did see stars,” Ms. Morat testified last year on videotape. “But I held onto my walker.”
Mr. Rhodes was also convicted of assaulting another Queens woman, Solange Elizee, who was 85 at the time.

Hasan has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder in the Nov. 5 shooting spree on the Texas post, which left more than two dozen others wounded. Authorities have not said whether they will seek the death penalty.
“Given the magnitude and seriousness of the crimes alleged … such alleged conduct makes me believe … that the accused lacks mental responsibility and capacity,” Capt. J. Huber wrote in the notice sent to Galligan.

Zeituni Onyango told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that she is troubled that her immigration woes have made her a political liability to her nephew. Onyango, the half sister of Obama’s late father, said she has exiled herself from the family after attending Obama’s inauguration because she didn’t want to become fodder for his foes. Lately I’ve had so much to write that I’ve adopted a strategy of exploring my local region, working in as many towns and cafes as I can. This keeps me in slightly unfamiliar territory, constantly needing to notice, adapt, find the best place to work, and meet new people. This month’s positively incredible astrology involves your ruling planet Jupiter, and it takes place in your 3rd solar house — Aquarius. This is the house of your local environment. In the current version of the world that means anywhere within one hour’s driving distance. Have you ever had that experience of noticing some really interesting detail right outside your door, even though you’ve walked past it a thousand times? The first of these is about focusing your intentions, your abilities and your understanding, in one gesture. The keyword is alchemy. Consider this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you feel yourself balking because you’re afraid, admit that to yourself, and then see if you can get to the root of the fear. That may be the principal benefit of the aspect. Second, the meeting with Neptune will make what is difficult seem easy; that is, you may have the sense of your commitment flowing through you. Now, to turn this around from the passive role to the active one: rather than information coming to you, consciously envision what you want. Or as a surfer once said to me, “Look where you want to be.” The idea of a conscious visioning process sounds nice, but it has two liabilities. One, we don’t necessarily know the implications of what we’re trying to manifest, and therefore it’s better to make sure that it’s directly within one’s deepest values. Second, it takes you out of the passive/victim role and puts you into the role of co-creator of your life. This is not as appealing as it sounds. The reason most peoples’ lives are in the condition they are in is a direct result of resistance to take up any real measure of responsibility for what they create. This is in part a function of lack of awareness; if this is intentional or convenient, it’s called ignorance. As the Sun and Venus cross the powerful, energetic midheaven of your solar chart, it is essential that you take responsibility for awareness, and for making your decisions based on what you know. You have room for error — but not to pretend that your choices don’t matter.
