One Brick (www.onebrick.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides support to other local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. This enables people to get
involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

When we finish each volunteer project, we gather as a group at a local bar or restaurant for food, drinks and the opportunity to continue to get to know each other. This helps to create a really fun social outlet as part of your volunteer experience.
Here's a little more information about the upcoming event:
involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.
Volunteer drivers are needed to provide patients transportation to treatment. Volunteer especially needed for North San Mateo County. This is very rewarding work. You are making a difference for the patient in getting them to treatment. Patients are very appreciative of your time. You are also making a difference to the client's caregiver by giving them a break. Typically you will pick up a patient at home, drive them to a hospital for treatment (lasting about 30 minutes) and then drive the client home. Total time is about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Hours for treatment are Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. You can drive as often as you like. Many drivers take one ride per week, but you can do more or less. Volunteers must have a driver’s license, insurance and a well-maintained vehicle. Volunteers will complete a half hour orientation/training meeting and participate in a one-hour telephone conference call.

Cancer Center Patient Navigators (palo alto)

Patient Navigators are a critical component of Stanford Cancer Concierge Services, serving as ambassadors for the Stanford Cancer Center. They work directly with patients to provide them with the highest quality hospitality and service to ensure a comfortable experience while in the Cancer Center. Volunteering is a rich, rewarding opportunity and we are always looking to expand our group of talented navigators.
Volunteers participate in an overall hospital orientation, go through a brief health clearance (at no cost) and are then trained in the department to familiarize them with the Cancer Center. To ensure the best service for our patients, we require navigators to serve a minimum of one three-hour shift per week for at least 6 months. Our shifts are Monday through Friday as follows: a) 8am-11am; b) 11am-2pm; c) 2-5pm. Education of navigators and staff is ongoing, so volunteers may participate in training seminars or meetings throughout the year. We expect a firm commitment from our volunteers as they play a crucial role in the day-to-day workings of the Cancer Center.
Navigators spend a large portion of their time working with patients, families, and caregivers. As we continually strive to provide the best customer service for our patients, we value volunteers with excellent listening skills, flexibility and an enthusiasm for sharing information about our Supportive Care Program. During a typical three-hour period, navigators will have the opportunity to move throughout the Cancer Center, guiding patients to the main hospital or to appointments, visit the Infusion Treatment Area, the various Clinics and Radiation Therapy waiting areas to distribute reading materials and snacks. Part of their time may be spent at the Welcome Desk directing visitors, answering phones and distributing materials. As volunteers represent the Cancer Center and Cancer Concierge Services, we do request they dress in business attire-blazers are highly recommended-and that they conduct themselves with professionalism and absolute compliance with patient confidentiality. Also, as going through cancer treatments can be an emotional process, we do require that volunteers be at least one year out of cancer treatment (either their own or a loved one’s) prior to participating in the program.

$50.00 - Breast Cancer Screening Study - Volunteers Needed $50.00 (Portola Valley)

Breast Cancer Early Detection Study
Help us fight breast cancer by finding it earlier, when treatment is more successful and less invasive.
A Silicon Valley company is developing a rapid screening test for younger women.
The scan takes 10 minutes, is painless, and does not involve X-rays or blood tests.
(This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute.)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? We are looking for paid female volunteers, ages 21-50, because mammograms are not as reliable for this age group as they are for post-menopausal women over 50.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN? While you lie on your back, a nurse will gently place a hand held scanner (the size of a pack of cards) against the skin of your breast at several locations. A technician, sitting out of view on the other side of a privacy screen, will take notes and run the equipment. There will be no physical examination, and no photographs taken.
WHAT WILL I LEARN? We will not be able to make a diagnosis of cancer in any of our volunteers. This is because we are only studying normal values in women without cancer. However, by helping us you are helping other women in the future, who may benefit when this test is taken into a larger, clinical study. However, if there is, at the end of the study, any scan that looks abnormal we will be recommending a follow up mammogram, which will be paid for, at Stanford.
WHAT DO I RECEIVE? You will receive a $50 check on completion of your test as our way of saying “thanks”.
WHO IS PAYING FOR THIS STUDY? The U.S. Government has provided funds for this study. This technology is under development at Stanford, University of California, Univ. of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere.
THERE ARE A FEW REQUIREMENTS BEFORE YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO VOLUNTEER:

Office space needed for Nonprofit! (palo alto)

GreatNonprofits, a technology nonprofit, is in need of some office space in Palo Alto. We have a lot of Stanford interns so we'd like to be as close to Stanford as possible. We are looking for donated space or shared space for pretty low rent.

More about us below or just check us out online at www.greatnonprofits.org

or send us an email at iskra(at)greatnonprofits.org

GreatNonprofits is a place to find, review, and talk about great -- and perhaps not yet great -- nonprofits. You already know that reviews by other people who have gone to a restaurant or tried out a doctor are the best way to find out about the quality of those services. If you have direct experience with a nonprofit, GreatNonprofits makes it easier for you to share your knowledge so that other people can discover the great nonprofits that are out there.

We don't review nonprofits ourselves. Much like Amazon book reviews or consumer reviews site (Epinions, Zagats, TripAdvisor, Yelp, etc.), the reviews and ratings are posted by people who have been touched by a nonprofit and want to share their story about it. You'll see on our site stories of people who have volunteered for or donated to nonprofits and stories of people who have received services.

Girls For A Change empowers young women to create social change with the guidance of adult women.
Girls For A Change Silicon Valley is now accepting Girl Action Team Coach applications for 2008-09 Girl Action Teams!

You can make a difference in the lives of girls and communities throughout the Bay Area by becoming a Girl Action Team Coach. Coaches guide a group of 10-15 middle or high school girls through the process of identifying an issue in their community and developing a social change project that tackles that issue.

Being a Girls For A Change Coach means working with a team of girls for 8 months supporting them in designing and implementing a project to change their community. It also means telling girls they are important, powerful, and that they can change the world.

We ask coaches to commit from September 2008-May 2009. The monthly time commitment is 15 hours per month including at least two meetings per month with your team. Girls For A Change will provide you with all of the training and resources you need to be successful. You are partnered with another woman coach and then matched to a team of girls. Coaching opportunities are available throughout Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and San Francisco Counties.
