GENERAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INITATIVE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Youth Development Initiative promotes and advocates the development of youth in the community, by treating youth as valued resources and encouraging youth-adult interaction. High-school youth are able to be trained as Peer Educators, and serve as members of the school's Youth Advisory Board. They may also become involved outside the school campus with the San Mateo County Youth Commission and other County boards and commissions, and educate adults about the importance of involving youth. The Youth Commissioners build connections with other youth advisory bodies, such as cities’ youth action councils and School Wellness Policy committees, to strengthen community-wide positive youth development.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Menlo Atherton Youth Development Coordinator position is a unique opportunity to work directly with youth on a high school campus. The goal of this position is to create opportunities for meaningful youth engagement for under-utilized youth through structured and unstructured programming. This position includes coordinating a school-wide Youth Advisory Board, Peer Education program and freshman transition program for underserved youth. In addition, to running formal programs, the YD Coordinator will be responsibly for creatively engaging students before school, during lunch times and afterschool hours. There is also a component of case management, as the YD coordinator helps to connect youth and their families to community resources. Above all, this position will serve as a trusted adult for students on campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Act as a trusting adult to the students at Menlo Atherton High School
• Collaborate with program partners to design program assessments tools and standards of practices that adhere to positive youth development frameworks.
• Coordinate a Youth Advisory Board for the school, including designing a school-wide need assessment, frequent lunchtime awareness activities and opportunities for school and community engagement
• Recruit, train and supervise Youth Peer Educators who provide classroom, campus and community education and awareness activities. Through these various activities the Peer Educators must serve 900 youth
• Support and promote activities that help youth develop leadership skills both during school and in after school activities.
• Help maintain a clean, safe and fun Student Services office
• Reach out to the nontraditional leaders for leadership programs.
• Provide opportunities for youth involvement in leadership and decision-making at the school site and in the surrounding community.
• Support on campus school clubs especially the EPA Youth Council
• Collaborate with program staff, school staff and administration to foster a school environment that promotes youth empowerment and participation.
• Help students and their families connect with community resources especially YFES affiliated programs
• Support and collaborate with community agencies that serve Menlo Atherton • Co-coordinate and supervise summer activities.
• Implement and/or support community projects that involve youth.
• Manage the project to ensure that high quality services are consistently delivered along with records maintained in accordance with appropriate standards.
• Evaluate the program and make suggestions for improvements.
• Implement the mission and vision of YFES as developed by the Board of Directors and Executive Staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree and relevant work experience
• Proven track record of positively engaging underserved high school aged youth
• Familiarity with a Youth Development or Asset Development approach to working with youth
• Comfortable with primary job function providing direct service with MA students
• Strong leadership skills and abilities
• Familiarity working on school sites
• Ability to develop strong working relationships with students, teachers, co-workers and school administration
• Ability to develop and implement new programs and structures
• Exhibit initiative and the ability to work independently and as a member of a close team
• Experience using common computer software packages (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and willingness to be trained on data collection software
• Valid CA Driver’s License, car insurance and clean driving record (we will check)
• Creativity, flexibility, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor
• Maturity and ability to work through challenges
• Some weekends and evenings required
• Community organizing experience including the ability to develop strong working relationships with community agencies and their representatives
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to communicate ideas and programs to adolescents and adults.
• High level of cultural competency.
• Strong organizational skills


PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bilingual in Spanish
• Masters in Social Work, Counseling or related field
• Experience providing individual and/or group work with underserved youth
• Knowledge of positive youth development theory and practice
• Knowledge of community resources in East Palo Alto and the San Mateo County
• Familiarity with the Sequoia Union High School District
