Under the general supervision of the HIM Director, the Lead Coder will oversea the coding of all coders in the HIM department. In addition to monitoring the coding process, the Lead Coder will provide data for the hospital's inpatient, outpatient, emergency care and ancillary Coding/DRG information systems. The Lead Coder assures that records are coded in a timely manner and works with the Business Services Department to provide them with any additional information they may need to complete the billing process. The Lead Coder will review staff coding quality and accuracy and provide feedback to coding staff. Productivity statistics will be maintained by the Lead Coder to monitor the coding process and forwarded to the HIM Director on a monthly basis. This position will also monitor RAC and other regulatory agency actions and be responsible for replying to any correspondence received related to coding of records. The Lead Coder must demonstrate the analytical ability to participate in troubleshooting of challenging accounts utilizing their expertise and experience. The Lead Coder will draft annual performance evaluations for review by the HIM Director and will be present when the evaluation is given to the employee. The Lead Coder will also draft disciplinary actions as necessary for the HIM Director to review and together the action will be issued to the employee if necessary

Education:
High School Diploma
Experience:
Three years related coding experience in an acute care hospital setting required. Any lead or supervisory experience preferred.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
1. Demonstrated knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, statistics and computer skills required.
2. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with all levels of hospital and support personnel.
3. Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing, stay organized, work effectively with intricate and detailed subject matter, use good deductive reasoning, shift priorities smoothly, and act independently within established guidelines.
4. Demonstrates the analytical ability to participate in troubleshooting of challenging accounts utilizing their expertise and experience.
5. Excellent clerical and general office skills.
6. Demonstrated tact and diplomacy.
License/Registration/Certification:
Coding certification: RHIT or RHIA or CCS required.
