JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, operates heavy motorized street sweeping equipment to clean residential and commercial streets of trash and other accumulations. Performs related street maintenance duties as required.

ESSENTIAL AND IMPORTANT DUTIES:
•Operates heavy motorized street sweeping equipment to sweep streets and pick up leaves and debris.
•Drives and steers sweeper along street near curbs.
•Operates controls to activate rotary brushes and water sprayers.
•Sets patterns on brooms; adjusts grooves, guards and conveyors.
•Removes obstacles from street and gutter areas to permit equipment access.
•Checks and adds gasoline, oil, air, and other equipment fluids; and fills water tank of sweeper from hydrant, using hose.
•Performs routine operator maintenance on the street sweeping equipment.
•Cleans and washes machine after use.
•Performs “Advance Notice Storm Patrol”, i.e., clean “catch basins” (gutters) during inclement/rainy weather.
•Performs related duties as required.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Operation, adjustment, and operator maintenance of heavy-duty mechanical street sweeping equipment. Safe working practices as applies to street sweeping, including traffic precautions.

Skill in:
Operating, adjusting, and performing operator maintenance of heavy-duty mechanical street sweeping equipment. Planning and carrying out efficient routes for street sweeping. Working independently and using judgment regarding street sweeping activities, safety and traffic hazards. Understanding and following written and oral instructions. Using hand and power tools incidental to street sweeping and operator maintenance, or in assisting in Public Works emergencies. Reading and understanding maps.

Ability to:
Rapidly learn the names and locations of streets included in the sweeping program.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; and one-year of full-time experience involving the operating of heavy motorized equipment.

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid California Driver’s Class B License. Willingness and ability to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and holidays, and be subject to call out for emergencies. Willing to work in exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions. Position is enrolled the DOT program and is subject to random drug testing.
