The Artists of the Novato Arts Center present First Sunday Open Studios, when on the first Sunday of every month (commencing December 6) artists will open their doors to the public from 11a to 4p. Over 40 working artists will welcome visitors to their studios. Free.

The Kanbar Center for the Performing Arts presents Joshua Nelson & the Kosher Gospel Singers, on Nov. 21, 2009 at 8:00 pm. The event will be held at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael.

Inspired by his faith, & love of gospel music, Joshua blends Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of American gospel music to create this own Kosher Gospel. His fire-and-brimstone voice was "discovered" by Oprah Winfrey and compared with the late Mahalia Jackson.

Cultural traditions typically change slowly, over the long arc of history. But occasionally a folk cultural innovation emerges that are startlingly fresh in its outward manifestation, although it remains deeply-even reverently-traditional at its core. You may have never heard of "kosher gospel" music before today, but the inspirational performances of Joshua Nelson, the creator of this style, will surely call out to your soul.

While the word "gospel" a Greek word meaning good news, is usually associated with African-American Christian churches, the musical styling is African, sounds that came from several African tribes, and developed as a tool to escape social injustice. This was the Spiritual, the Meter Hymns, Jubilee songs and ultimately, the coined "Gospel Music." These African rhythms, pre-date the West Africans introduction to Christianity. These same sounds have been retained in the musical cultures of Black African Muslims and Jews, and such soul-inflected vocalizations filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua Nelson attended as a child with his family, observant Jews who traced their lineage back to Senegal.

The band will be joined by locals The Red Hot Chachkas for a special collaborative piece.

Bringing Joshua to The Osher Marin JCC has been a collaborative effort from the North Bay Jewish community and is sponsored by Kol Shofar and in association with Rodef Shalom.

Rabbi David Wolpe and Marin Interfaith Leaders Explore Why Faith Matters

Do religions cause war? Does "belief" go against science? These and other questions about faith will be examined in a program entitled "Why Faith Matters" being presented by the Center for Jewish Life at the Osher Marin JCC on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 7pm. Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, Newsweek Magazine's #1 Pulpit Rabbi in American and the author of Why Faith Matters, will deliver a talk and then be joined by a panel moderated by Reverend Carol Hovis, Executive Director of the Marin Interfaith Council, featuring Presbyterian Pastor Doug Huneke of Westminster Church, Buddhist Priest Fu Schroeder of Zen Center Green Gulch Farm, and Sufi Muslim Dr. Arife Ellen Hammerle.

There's been much written in recent years painting those who practice religion as fanatic or irrational. The wish to defend religion and show its relationship to history and science led Rabbi Wolpe to write his book; the desire to broaden the discussion of faith led to the creation of this program at the Osher Marin JCC. Joanne Greene, Director of the Center for Jewish Life, is proud to be presenting Rabbi Wolpe and an esteemed panel representing the religions most commonly practiced in Marin County.

"We are blessed," said Greene, "with compassionate, open-minded, articulate religious leaders in a community that prizes spirituality and social justice. Exploring the similarities and differences in the practice of our respective faiths can only serve to increase understanding and cooperation."

The Center for Jewish Life at the Osher Marin JCC, funded by the Koret and Taube Foundations, is dedicated to providing adult Jewish learning opportunities to both Jews and non-Jews in the North Bay. Monthly classes with JCC Scholar Rabbi Darren Kleinberg include "On One Foot - All of Judaism in 60 Minutes", "Repairing the World" and "Jewish Identity and Diversity in the 21st Century".

What is Contra Dancing?
Contra dance is a form of couples� folk dance that emphasizes pattern, flow and rhythm. Easier dances are at the beginning of the evening, then a break for snacks and socializing, then more complex contras. The live music features fantastic fiddle tunes, driving Celtic rhythms, Cajun, old-timey and whatever else the band gets charged up with.

People of all ages and lifestyles are welcome. A dancer and his or her partner dance a series of figures, or moves, with each other and with another couple for a short time. They then repeat the same figures with another couple, and so on. A caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances. The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. This gives everyone an idea of what to expect so the movements can be easily executed. The figures are similar to those of old-time square dancing. The figures are combined in different ways for each different dance. After teaching a dance, the caller continues to call the figures while the music plays and the dancers dance, until the dancers appear to have mastered the figures.

Note: Please bring your own water bottles/mugs to conserve resources. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents: all non�dancing children must be supervised.

Murch�s �Three Fathers of Cinema� are Edison, Flaubert and Beethoven, in his lively and provocative analysis of the narrative arts, drawing on literature and music as well as film. Murch will also describe his personal �detective� work restoring the first attempt at a synchronized sound film by Edison, made more than 30 years before the advent of talking pictures. Following the lecture, Walter Murch will participate in an onstage discussion about his work.

Judd�s Hill Winery is hosting its third annual Hanukkah Hootenanny on Sunday, December 13 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., at the winery, 2332 Silverado Trail in Napa (between Hardman & Trancas). The event will be a lively celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah---focusing on Judd�s Hill�s limited production, award-winning wines. Hanukkah, also known as the holiday of lights, takes place December 11-18 this year. There will be entertainment by Meshugga Beach Party (more at www.meshuggabeachparty.com), who play traditional Jewish folk songs in an instrumental �surf music� style. There will be, in Judd Finkelstein�s words, �a latke bar unlike any other,� with accoutrements such as sour cream and applesauce and other exciting toppings created by Pat Burke, the winery�s award-winning chef and national BBQ champion (think barbecued beef brisket in slivers on top of the potato pancakes). All of Judd�s Hill�s current release wines will be available as well as library selections.

Partial proceeds from the event will benefit Napa Children�s Health Initiative, whose mission is to make sure that all children in Napa County are covered by health insurance (www.napachi.org).

TERESA TUDURY started writing songs at age 12 and was performing in San Francisco nightclubs by the time she was 15. She has played on and off in the Bay Area for years, and for almost two decades was based in Los Angeles where in addition to music gigs, she wrote comedy and worked as a character actress on stage and screen.

With a deep, sultry voice that magnetizes audiences, and a scathing comedic wit to match, Teresa is a consummate performer who pours out her original songs with power, verve, passion, and disarming humor. Her vocal stylings are perfectly complemented by her bluesy guitar playing.

Throughout her career, Teresa has recorded or performed with such greats as Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones, Lyle Lovett, Taj Mahal, Leo Kottke and Bonnie Bramlett. Mendocino coast photographer Larry R. Wagner will present a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the making of his latest artistic project, Mendocino Art Center's 50th Anniversary Exotic Calendar, Thursday, December 10, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Photographer and editor of the popular books "Artists of the Mendocino Coast Volumes 1 and 2," Larry will delight with tales and a slide presentation revealing the inspiration behind some of the creative, high-quality images that could diversely be described as unique, exotic, sexy, funny, riveting and more.

Larry collaborated with each of the models, both men and women, brainstorming ideas for each of the months, resulting in an eclectic array of images spanning from mermaids to wood nymphs to impeccable re-creations of famous works of art, including Dale Moyer's tribute to Norman Rockwell's "Art Critic," Don Paglia and Elyse Wyman's homage to Jean-Leon G�r�me's "Pygmalion and Galatea," and Richard Yaski's ode to Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man." Many images portray a personal statement from the model, whether to convey a love of travel or reflect a life transition. Larry even got out from behind the camera and posed, as Adam, with his wife Marilyn, as Eve, for "Botanical Garden of Eden."

Mendocino Art Center's 50th Anniversary Exotic Calendar pictorially reveals an exciting selection of the top coastal artists and community members as you've never seen them before in a stunningly photographed and designed 20-month calendar, featuring full color and classic black and white images. The artistically rendered calendar, which begins in January 2010 and runs through August 2001, is a fundraiser for the Mendocino Art Center's 50th anniversary.

All roles are open. This is a non-AEA production and there is no pay. Class registration is required. No appointment is necessary. Rehearsals begin on January 25, 2010 at 6:40 pm. Born out of a single email, MoveOn.org has spread through the Internet to become one of the most powerful progressive players in American politics. With no central office and a small staff working from their homes, MoveOn.org grew to an organization with over 5 million members. Director Alex Jordanov followed this movement for 6 years; a movement built on the strength of its membership and best understood through their individual stories.
