The City of Santa Rosa�s Art in Public Places Committee announces a new public art commission opportunity for an artist to design and implement a permanent public art project in a streetscape location, as a gateway element near 1275 South Santa Rosa Avenue in Santa Rosa, California.

ELIGIBILITY
This commission is open to practicing, professional artists residing in California�s North Bay Area. Artists working in a variety of permanent media and functional art are encouraged to apply.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT OPPORTUNITY
The Art in Public Places Committee is seeking an artist to design and implement a permanent public art project in a streetscape location, as a gateway element. The location, near 1275 South Santa Rosa Avenue, is on the island near the intersection of Santa Rosa Avenue and South A Street in Santa Rosa California. The art project should create a distinctive visual landmark, monumental in size and represent the gateway into the downtown for those who are traveling north on Santa Rosa Avenue. The art piece should be constructed by using reused materials or recycled material and be illuminated using solar energy for its power. The construction should have a minimal impact on the environment through the use of materials that do not pollute the air during construction or thought off- gassing after installation. The use of organic materials is encouraged. The art should be permanent and lasting and should become an icon representing Santa Rosa�s, Sonoma County�s and Nissan of Santa Rosa�s on-going commitment to a healthy, sustainable, quality of life.

PROJECT BUDGET
The maximum project budget is $37,000 and should be inclusive of all artist fees, and all expenses related to design development, including engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation of the artwork, insurance, and all other project related expenses. Finalists invited to make preliminary proposals will receive an honorarium of $300 for their efforts and materials for a maquette of their proposed project.

BACKGROUND
The City�s Art and Culture Element in the General Plan 2020 calls for creating more inspiring places for the residents and visitors of Santa Rosa. This public art project contributes to these goals and others such as with the Redevelopment Plan, Main Street Program and the recent initiation of a Downtown Arts District. The project site was identified because of its proximity to the Nissan of Santa Rosa auto dealership which is sponsoring this project. This site also acts as a gateway to the Santa Rosa Arts District from the south and will complement the Ned Kahn project at the West 3rd Street entrance, and the Boback Emad project at Mendocino and College Avenue.

I am an enthusiastic photgrapher of 40 years experience who is taking a refresher course at my local college. Our next assignment is for 10 images of the same subject, each image to be as different from the rest as possible. I am looking for an aspiring model, or just someone who would enjoy collaborating with me for an afternoon, either on location or in my work space. Age or race are not a consideration, just be over 18. Yes, this would require nudity and I would share creative control for the shoot. The model will receive copies of all images and it could lead to more work, depending upon how well the project is reviewed. A model release will be required and there would be no remuneration, but I can provide refreshments.
