My band is a 3-piece, we've been sharing with a 5-piece without any problems because the rooms are big and they have storage space built in. The atmosphere is cool - everyone's super cool with each other and the guys who run the place are nice and actually give a shit about you. If you want a non-shared space they run from $375 up to $500 depending on the size.
There's only two shares available right now - they won't last. There's one single-occupancy room available as well.
I am doing remote recording for people in other parts of the world but it would be cool to work with someone local, take ideas from the ground up, then take them back down deep, where in-the-pocket is a way of life, and a 3rd party has to step in to break up the groove.

Super Big-band Jazz

Every Wed. nite at 8 p.m., at "Roosters Roadhouse," a funky art-deco club
at Grand & Clement in Alameda, "Soundwave," the 20 piece Bob Enos jazz
band plays. Enos, who did some arranging for Kenton in the fifties, is the arranger,
composer, and conductor of this band, with a book totaling over 1,400 charts!

Playing in the Kenton, Ferguson, Rogers, Basie, & Ellington modes, the band is
comprised of "heavyweights," including Jeff Roach and contemporary alto sax recording
notable Pete Yellin. The well-known Kentonite bandleader, Mike Vax occasionally
guests to help "wow" the audience. Bob Parlocha, of KCSM broadcast fame, plays
in the sax section as well. Latin percussionist Jay Adams, an original KJAZ broadcaster,
weaves rhythym, melody, and accents to add to the texture and fabric of

the band.

Coincidentally, Jay, while a KJAZ broadcaster, drove a black on black Jaguar roadster.
A movie (Play Misty For Me), directed by jazz lover Clint Eastwood, was rumored to be
be loosely patterned after him and the Jag.

The band had rave reviews after a couple of outings in the San Jose Jazz Festival.

Come listen!

A REAL OPPORTUNITY!

Established touring fast punk/pop punk/heavy band seeks touring drummer, current drummer works so we are looking for a potential fill in or full time member who can tour frequently and devote more time and energy into the group.. This is a good op. We currently have some great label interest and would like to put out a new release and get back on the road asap. Been featured in national magazines, videos, radio and more. played Vans Warped Tour, and other big tours. 12 tours total. played with many BIG bands, good tourvan, booking agent. National sponsors you HAVE heard of, Full merch catalog etc. We HAVE FANS all over and play larger shows frequently. have a great chance at "making it" with our band, just need to keep up our momentum with a tour ready drummer. Basically jumping into an established band and skipping all the B.S and 6 years hardwork it took to get here, lucky you ;)
NO, hard drugs or douchbags. Alcaholics pretty much suck too, ,we're very driven and work hard with our band, all that stuff is no good and just gets in the way. weed is fine.
we're easy going and generally nice dudes, but are VERY serious with our goals as a band and its success.
ages 17 - 28 roughly, MUST be a skilled drummer who hits hard and plays solid. must be able to play super fast punk beats, AND double bass metal style and everything in between WELL and SOLID**. Previous band/tour experience is good. Please only respond if you are awesome on the drums, this is a good opportunity and requires a basically professional drummer, period. showmanship and look is a plus.
MUST be ready to rehearse 3 times a week, and able and ready to tour ANYTIME. we dont give a shit about your job, and neither should you.

We need a bass player for a gig Aug 8th, with the intention of playing together long term if its a good fit.

We play mainly classic rock covers (Police/Zeppelin/Beatles/Deep Purple/Aerosmith/Ted Nugent/Rush/Aretha Franklin/etc) and also some blusier stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughn/Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and some newer stuff like Stone Temple Pilots/Cake/No Doubt/Cracker/etc. I put our song list below. We rehearse in San Rafael at Music Spectrum and have a pretty flexible rehersal schedule, usually once/week from 6:30-9:30, We play for fun and are not looking to tour the world anytime soon yet take the music seriously and hope to at least cover our rent every month. Let me know if seriously interested so we can get together and jam!

1. Come Together - The Beatles

Hi - I'm looking for a fellow guitarist to start writing tunes with. I've been taking lessons for years now and practice regularly by myself (and jam with a few friends every couple of weeks) and while practicing is fun it's best to test your chops by trying to play lead over a riff you didn't come up with yourself.

About me
-25
-Playing since 16
-Good gear - I own a few guitars with a full pedal board of effects (built it myself) and a not so great (and soon to be upgraded) 40 w marshall amp (I haven't gone bigger since I mainly play in my room)
-Know my theory - scales, keys, covering the fretboard (I'm trying to improve on how I cover chords, but that's a whole different story)
-Mainly play lead
-Can sing
-Have a few songs I've written in the past 6 months but have no vocals for them

I guess my first love is grunge rock, but I listen to all types of stuff (Pantera to CCR to the Who to Jimi to Sevendust to Pearl Jam). That said my playing has taken me heavily into jazz and blues (though I love nothing more than rocking out to Tool)

Ht me up if you're interested.

-Dave

piano teacher (glen park)

I am a teacher with over 20 years of experience who enjoys working with students of all ages. I graduated at the top of my class from a major music conservatory (The Eastman School of Music), hold Bachelors and Masters degrees in piano performance, have done doctoral work in performance and music theory, and have performed throughout the United States. I currently maintain a large private studio in San Francisco and teach piano and music theory at University of San Francisco, where I am an adjunct professor.

In this classically-based instruction you will learn pieces by great composers from Bach to Brahms and beyond, discover how to feel comfortable at the piano, develop good reading and listening skills, learn how to practice, understand some theoretical aspects of music, and, if desired, learn how to perform and communicate your musical ideas to listeners. My students range from beginner to advanced. I welcome students who are returning to the instrument after a hiatus.

My music studio--which houses a small grand piano, audio equipment, music software programs, and hundreds of scores and books on music--is located in Glen Park, walking distance from BART and the 26, 44, and 52 bus lines, and right off I-280.

Well said. And I must ad that it's your fault you're not getting what you so richly believe your entitled too. People don't want to listen to you for a reason. What do you think that reason may be? Hint: it has everything to do with YOU!!! and what you're selling or trying to sell.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think we as musicians need to take more responsibility for our own demise. Clubs hire cover bands because that is what their market wants. You guys for some strange reason cannot understand that concept. You feel entitled just because you feel your talent is special. Then you blame record companies, promoters, clubs, and other pop bands. What about the fans? They are the ones who decide, not you, not clubs or record companies. It's the fans, the market. Here is how you beat them. Find out what the market wants, create it, and they will support you. Period.

The music industry did not give us those Disney bands or all of those no talent pop groups we all hate so much. The market did. For some reason, they are not feeling what you're sellin'. You can do something to change your attitude about how you record music, or you can continue being pissed off at the wrong enemy. It's wasted energy. If you are no playing music for money, then you have nothing to be angry about. Nobody is stopping you from playing music. Why stop them from doing their thing? This is not Iran. Take some responsibility.

RE: TO ALL COVER BANDS AND PEOPLE THAT BOOK COVER BANDS (novato)

First off I've been involved in one way or another with the music scene here in the Bay Area since the late 60's. So, I've seen more than most of you. And I can say in all honesty, that it has been a VERY long time since I've seen or heard an original band that was worth the price of entry. There have been a few. But for the most part since the advent of Punk, Garage, Grunge, Alternative and what have you. The original music scene has SUCKED! And here's why. Since the beginning of Punk the standard for musicianship has fallen to an all time low. Why? Because there is so little musical skill involved. That means ANYONE who can count to four and down-stroke a few simple chords now feels compelled to make music. Because they realized how incredibly simple it is to do. And since then the playing sucks, the music sucks, the songwriting sucks, and the singing sucks. The bar has been set SO LOW that the scene is overwhelmed with mediocrity. I've heard so many bands that just plain suck in every way possible. But that's all you know. And you didn't bother to do a little research to find other music. And when you did a little research you quickly relized this! HOLY SHIT!! I'll have to actually learn how to play the guitar. And I don't want to put in the time and energy to actually get good enough to play this other music. So I guess I'll stay right here where I'm accepted as a "musician" even though I know that I can't really play the guitar well enough to be in a band that requires it's members to ACTUALLY play with skill.

Now what you have with cover bands is a bunch of players who were able to recognize superior playing, writing and singing and decided that they too wanted to aspire to a higher and more skilled musical level. AND LOT"S of people recognized the great skill set and enjoyed it. Those same people went out at some point to hear original music and were disgusted at the crap they heard. And so they went back to what the liked. There are some enormously talented musicians playing in cover bands. MUCH more talented in every way than most all of the original bands I've heard. The guitar players can play circles around some nit-wit strumming chords or down-stroking the same 3 chords to a slammin four four beat.

Face it man people have come to realize that there is so little worthwhile going on in the original music scene that they all ask "why is music dead here in the Bay Area" Because a bunch of hacks are still sound like a bunch of hacks. So my advice to you is: Listen to what has gone down in the past (before punk etc..) take a few lessons in composition and skill. And maybe, just maybe someone will pay attention to what you have to offer. Until then.... learn how to actually play your instrument.

Jazz Bassist Seeks Jazz Pianist (Belmont)

I'm an upright bassist with a lot of professional jazz and latin experience. I was schooled on the bandstands of NYC by playing with some notable artists such as Norman Simmons, Jimmy Heath, and others. I also play electric bass guitar. In recent years I've been mostly using that ax to play funk, r&b, blues, rock, etc. Now, I'm itching to refocus on jazz and maybe latin or latin-jazz.

To get things started, I'm hoping to find a jazz pianist who'll make the time with me to work up fresh arrangements of standards and possibly original compositions. The goal is to get out of the studio quicly and get work for the piano-bass duo. If and when it seems right, we can add vocals, drums, or other instruments, provided that (a) I can find work for the bigger combo, and (b) the musicians we add don't transform us into a pickup band dong fakebook gigs. In the past I've gotten a stable combo working regularly, up to 5 nights each week, and kept it working for many years. I'm hoping to do this now.

I'm very serious about this. I can provide most of the resources needed to get started. I have a professional recording studio with plenty of room for even a large combo. It's equipped with an acoustic piano that's well tuned and voiced with good action. It also has a high quality drum kit. The studio is a professional recording facility with a sound tech available for making, mixing, and matering a demo or a full album.

So, I hope to find a pianist with the experience, skills, passion, and the commitment needed for creating a working jazz combo. If you're interested, please tell me where to call you. I won't waste your time.

Showcase your musical talent on live stage

We are hosting the open mic this Tuesday in the inside dining room. Play your original music, play some covers, jam with others, or demonstrate your virtuosity. Just make sure you have a good time. Music is generally acoustic but we can run an electric bass through our board. There is also a piano available.

Many performers who have played the open mic have been recruited into playing regular gigs. With three stages for live performance and the summer season kicking in, we are always on the lookout for new talent.

Angelica's serves from an excellent dinner menu and superb wine/beer list. It is a great place to bring your family and friends for dinner and drinks and be entertained by some of the bay area’s phenomenal up and coming artists.

show starts at 6:30pm

Prog-rock band looking for committed, high-skill LEAD guitarist (sunnyvale)

We are a technical-progressive project looking to complete our roster with interests of recording, live performance, and ultimately getting signed.

Currently our line-up is: a vocalist(22yo), a guitarist(24yo), a bassist(21yo), and a drummer(20yo). Our style is probably best defined by as by one of the more over-used terms in music...Progressive. We don't write in generic formats and incorporate a heavy amount of dynamic layering with plenty of instrumental sections(we have some instrumental songs, as well). Some bands/artists we're influenced by are Dream Theater/Cacophony/Queensryche/Zero Hour/Racer X. We will email you recordings upon request.

In a guitarist, we're looking for someone who's talented and versatile, as some of the riffs are heavy, technical and fast, so chops are a must. We're no strangers to arpeggios/fast scale-runs/tapping/etc, so it'd be a plus if you are already fairly fluent with these techniques/concepts. There's a lot of room in our music to show off your talents, along with a good number of guitar harmonies.

Please also be reasonably within our age range. No disrespect at all tothe older players/singers, but we're looking for players between about 18-25 years of age.

Email a response to this ad with your name, a description of yourself and influences, a phone number to reach you by, and a previous recording if you have one (perfectly fine if you don't). We take this band very seriously, so please don't expect any response from us if your reply is all of 2 sentences.

Thanks for reading and hope to hear back soon
Cover bands are not taking any original bands gigs- the clubs that cater to cover bands are different, and so is the clientele;the people that do original music are not there to see cover music.. -gypsy jazz ryhthm (la pompe, waltz, latin)
-left hand fingerings and patterns, arpeggios
-gypsy waltzes
-developing speed, playing fast and staying relaxed
-improvisation
-Django Reinhardt solos

Looking for a fun and entertaining musician for your upcoming Bay Area event?

Michael Udelson has over 20 years of experience playing for parties and weddings, and entertaining guests at San Francisco's finest hotels and restaurants.

Getting married? If you need ceremony music, solo piano is a classy & elegant choice! But get the right one....
There are a lot of great song and style options for solo piano: standards, classical, jazz, pop or even current songs done instrumentally.

Michael Udelson has been the house pianist at the Four Seasons Hotel SF for over seven years.
His repertoire ranges from 1930's standards (Gershwin & Cole Porter, Sinatra tunes) to songs by current artists such as Coldplay, Green Day, Oasis.
And EVERYTHING in between. Michael can play over 1400 songs from every era in between.

visit his website www.SFpianoplayer.com
to listen to audio samples and read press and comments too!

In fact, Michael would be great for your reception, cocktail hour or dinner as well.
Affordable, because you only have to hire one musician. One entertaining musician with a fun and eclectic repertoire.
You can save by having Michael play for both the ceremony, and the reception!
He has a great portable keyboard that sounds like a nice grand piano- (if one of your venues doesn't have a piano.)

He's available throughout the Bay Area and even Napa, Sonoma-- hell even Sacramento? give it a shot....

I'm a drummer with recording and gigging experience looking for an original rock/pop/indie type band with a good sense of dynamics, melody and song arrangement. There seem to be a number of acoustic-rock, metal or jam bands looking for drummers, but that is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a band that wants to play mostly electric stuff and one that has catchy and memorable vocals. You should be able to play at a reasonable volume; loud is not better. Age doesn't matter to me as long as we can rehearse twice a week and get local gigs.
Please reply with something online that I can listen to and a little bit about yourself. I'll reply with samples of mine if I'm interested. Thanks.

The Peatot band plays cover versions of famous Israeli songs from the recent 30 years. Our styles are very diverse, ranging from rock, pop through ethnic and Mediterranean.

In the recent year we’ve had a chain of successful gigs in the SF bay area, packing up houses in Palo Alto and Cupertino, headlining "The Independent" in SF, and entertaining thousands in the annual "Israel in the Gardens", held at the Yerba Buena gardens. (see videos below)

For us, playing in The Peatot is a fun, exciting and rewarding experience. We work hard, we deliver the goods, and we get excellent response from our audience.
Would you like to join us? Send a message and we'll happy to meet you and see what works out!

I record/create experimental music and I'm looking for space in which to build a small project studio. I currently have a home recording studio but I'm running out of space, and I'd like to set up a studio in Oakland or Berkeley.

My ideal situation would have a modest "live room" (maybe around 15'x15' or more) and a second room to use as a control room (10'x10' or so), where all of my equipment would be set up. I would also be interested in a large enough space where I would have the option of building my own control room - sort of a room within a room.

I am just beginning my search, so I don't know what's out there or what people are asking for. If you have something that's available, or have any suggestions, please email me (Jeffrey) and tell me what you've got.
Thanks!
Really good music. We have the technology, we have the desire. We need a bass player.

I'm a Marin-based saxophone and clarinet player who has over 15 years professional experience playing jazz, swing, blues, Dixieland, and classical music. My jazz playing style is in the mode of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and early Sonny Rollins on the sax and Johnny Dodds, Bob Helm, Edmond Hall, and a touch of Benny Goodman on the clarinet.

I can read music and improvise on the complete range of saxes and clarinets (bass through soprano). I own most of the saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) and clarinets (soprano, alto, and bass). I've also performed classical, pit band, and other various "legit" gigs on both sax and clarinet.

I'm available for paid gigs and studio work, either as a sub or, if the situation is right, a regular player. I can play solo and my small jazz group is available for hire as well. Check out sound clips of my playing at this site: http://demos.campbellsjazz.com/.
Monday night open mic - The Hotel Utah Saloon (SOMA / south beach)

Winner of "Best open mic" in the Bay Guardian's "Best of Bay" awards...

Every monday night, we have an open mic at the historic Hotel Utah Saloon here in San Francisco. Signup by 7:30. The Hotel Utah is located at 500 4th St. (at Bryant), SF, CA.

The Utah has a house guitar, a piano, and a PA. So, if you want, you can come empty handed and still play us your songs.

For more information, go here: http://theutah.org

Here's our most recent newsletter:

JJ here. Say, Bridget put together the photos from last week's open mic - she's got them up on the ol' website: http://theutah.org. Thanks so much Bridget - they look great (as always).

The featured performer this monday is Avaghys! yeah, there's an 'h' in there and its hard to say, but I give it a try every time. Avaghys rocks his own brand of world* music. Now most the time, I have no idea what words he's singing, because I'm only fluent in English and Canadian, and Avaghys, he's not singing in either of my preferred languages. What's cool though, is it doesn't really matter - I know what he's singing about. and I'm probably just projecting my own heartbreaking little stories onto his indecipherable (to me) lyric, I hope he doesn't mind... Avagys sings with a rare passion - he can lull you in with his calm and his smile, and then boom, he lays you out. great stuff - hey for more on Avaghys, have a look here: http://theutah.org/artist/avaghys

* I hate** that term 'world music'. Not so much the music, but the fact that pretty much any music that's not common in the ol' usa is lumped together under the 'world' category. It's kind of like the world series, but in reverse. but perhaps its necessary on some level to lump a lot of stuff under the same label, you know, for brevity, and I guess we do the same thing with rock and roll, and so I guess I don't know what my point is. I'm still upset about it, though.

** I know hate is a strong word.

that's about all I know today. hope you're doing good.

I've got some material. I'm looking for some people to play with and form a band. The only requirements are that you need to think of a name for yourself that sound famous and can collaborate. The end goal is to only play well written songs that make people want to move, or do something rather than standing still. Some music that I like; Death Cab, Radio head, Slint, Pin Back. I play rhythm and own good equipment Tele, Mesa. I've been on a label toured etc. The first goal would be to be able to play the second billing at the bottom of the hill. The fact is that there are a billion bands and most people don't become famous. There's a lot of work that comes first, I'm more focused on having fun and having something in my life that motivates me.
