USHER for BACH CONCERTS (noe valley)

The San Francisco Choral Society [Robert Geary, Artistic Director] presents, this weekend, Saturday, December 5th & Sunday, December 6th, in two evening performances, an all Bach program. The program includes the Magnificat, BWV 243, and the second half of the Bach Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, Parts IV, V & VI [first three Cantatas were performed last season]. A member of the Choral Society who writes about music, describes the Bach as "a fantastic dance of happiness..." and about the Magnificat, "...singing this piece is like dancing, a Sacred Dance to New Life and the Miracle of Creation."

A few music lovers who would like to volunteer their assistance as ushers are invited to contact the House Manager to check on available dates. No specific ushering experience is required, though a generally friendly attitude and willingness to help are necessary. An orientation will be given before each concert. The venue is in Noe Valley, in San Francisco, at St. Paul's Church, 221 Valley at Church near 29th, on the J-Church streetcar line. The report time for Saturday is 6:30 and for Sunday at 6:00. For available dates, contact Ruth Geos, for the SF Choral Society at 415: 995-2837, or through this email link. Ruth will confirm dates with you.
"All the children who are held and loved will know how to love others...Spread these virtues in the world. Nothing more need be done." Meng Zi c.300BC

A child who lives her days without being held or touched or talked to often suffers so many developmental delays that by the time she reaches school age, community schools may refuse to admit her...Half the Sky was created in order to enrich the lives and enhance the prospects for orphaned children in China. We establish and operate infant nurture and preschool programs, provide personalized learning for older children and offer loving permanent family care, medical care and guidance for children with disabilities. It is our goal to ensure that every orphaned child has a caring adult in her life and a chance at a bright future...The time they spend in the institution, many months at least and often many years, has a tremendous impact on orphaned children’s long term development. For the children who will never be adopted, Half the Sky programs are the closest thing they will ever receive to the love and support of a birth family...Thousands of children are now enrolled in Half the Sky’s five programs that provide love and hope for children living in China’s orphanages.
Who says a garbage can is trash? Who says sweeping up is a chore? Yes Sweet Can instills new life into old ideas, creating in a world in which anything can happen. This piece is about a group of people who, blown around by a storm of change, come to a place where the old rules of physical limitations no longer apply. In this place, they encounter acrobatic brooms, disco-dancing chocolate milk, and a trio of tap dancing trash cans. Their individual journeys toward expanded perspectives-- with the help of their circus apparatus, aerial silks, acrobatics, slack rope, and hula hoops-- expose the magic of everyday life, accessible to everyone. In Yes Sweet Can the metaphor is made real, and possibility is made tangible, encouraging people to question what they assume to be true.

Onstage at the Lark presents Jazz Nation with legendary jazz vocalist Kenny Washington and his quartet for an evening of exceptional jazz Thursday January 21st at 8:00pm. If you have never heard this New Orleans native sing before, get ready for a jaw dropping experience. Kenny is a jazz vocalist virtuoso. His free playful approach, with over a four-octave range, is awe-inspiring, his tone is liquid, his scat is rapid-fire, passionate, melodious and inventive.

Each Onstage at the Lark production acts as a companion to the National Theatre’s live direct simulcasts of plays from London to the Lark. This show is a companion for “Nation” the third play in the series is based on a novel by Terry Pratchett that will be broadcast January 30th. The live jazz show will realize the "coming of age" theme from "Nation" with it’s opening act, Redwood High jazz ensemble, "We haz Jazz". We Haz Jazz will accompany Kenny Washington on one number as the stage transitions to the professional musicians. Redwood High Music teacher, John Mattern, said the students are thrilled to be sharing the stage with jazz great Kenny Washington.

Tickets for this evening of stellar live music are $25 and can be purchased at the theater or by calling 415.924-5111.

It's that time of year again and the Christmas Jug Band threatens to darken the door of The Masonic Hall in Mill Valley for a repeat performance this year. This irreverent crew of stalwart purveyors of the jugabilly mystique is a seasonal assemblage of misfits of Commander Cody alumni and others from various notable Bay Area musical aggregations. What got started from a Wild Turkey-inspired momentary lapse of sanity is now, four albums and 30 years of fruitcakes later, an unconventional holiday tradition of highly skewed merriment. One never knows exactly what form this 100% acoustic folk-skiffle-swing jug band will take from one season to the next, but those who attend will get a full dose of tongue-in-cheek holiday highjinks.

Once again Mill Valley's Balboa Cafe is providing an incredible sampling of food and wines. Last year our Meet and Greet was over the top. It also includes a reserved seat. This is going to be THE holiday party so get your tickets early and get ready for some serious cheer.
"Here's to the bright New Year, and a fond farewell to the old; here's to the things that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold." .... and we are going to create some memories NYE. It's gonna be a Funkified R & B Dance Party with Mill Valley’s own Curt Campbell (The Beast) and his all star band. There will be incredible delectable chocolate treats, party favors and complimentary Champagne at midnight. Ring in 2010 movin’ and shakin’! Join your friends and family in the heart of Mill Valley at the now becoming famous Masonic Center across from City Hall.

Inspired by the San Francisco Bay Area Music Scene Curt Campbell's influences come from bands such as Steve Miller, Tower of Power, Santana and The Doors. Mesmerized by the harmonica playing of front man Huey Lewis, Curt learned to play the blues by listening to the likes of James Harman, Charlie Musselwhite, and Norton Buffalo. Curt is a Tam High graduate and the only Navy Seal to come out of Marin so far!

Creekside Craft Fair - San Leandro (san leandro)

6th Annual Holiday Art and Craft Sale

Creekside Community Church, located at 951 McArthur Blvd. in San
Leandro, will be sponsoring their 6th annual Arts and Crafts Holiday
Show and Sale on December 4th and 5th.

Two local charities, Building Futures for Women and Children and Interfaith Homelessness Network will be the beneficiaries of proceeds from the show.

Building Futures for Women and Children work to build communities with underserved women and children where they are safely and supportively housed, free from homelessness and family violence. They offer a variety of services including adult and child counseling, food, shelter, and children's activities.

Interfaith Homelessness Network provides food, clothing and personal supplies to
homeless individuals in the greater San Leandro area.

Local artists are pleased to be able to assist Creekside in its ongoing efforts to
sponsor these charities.

Quality gift items and holiday decor that are unique and
beautiful will be displayed. All pieces are handmade and will include
paintings, hand-blown glass, ceramics, stained glass, pottery, jewelry,
gourds, quilts, clothing, ornaments, fused glass, inlaid wood items and wreaths.

Each artist will donate one of their pieces for a raffle which will be held on
December 5th at the close of the show (you need not be present to win).

To obtain a free raffle ticket bring a full sized shampoo or
conditioner to donate. Additional raffle tickets may also be
purchased.

Show hours are 12 to 7pm on Friday and 10 to 4:30 pm on Saturday.
Come early for the best selection, as this has become the most
anticipated event in San Leandro for unique holiday shopping.

Also available for purchase on Friday is a lasagna dinner and on Saturday a
Chile and Sandwich lunch may be purchased. Proceeds from the food
sales will also support the two charities.

San Francisco Community! We are looking for some monetary help! I know times are tough but we need folks to help raise some money for the Bayview community. The Renaissance-Bayview office is having a Holiday Festival on December 12th and we have decorations, food vendors, tree lighting ceremony, toy giveaway and awesome entertainment. The event will be held in the Bavyiew Opera house and Joe Lee Rec Center. I know it's last minute and we are tight on time and resources, but I would like to ask anyone out there if they could help raise funds to bring an ice skating rink for the kids of the Bavyiew community. If you or anybody you may know can help or is interested in helping, please contact Wendy Guzman at wendy@rencenter.org or 415-647-3728 ext. 409.

THANKS!!!!!

Celebrate the holidays with family and friends at the 24th annual Christmas Revels, a beloved Bay Area holiday tradition. This year’s homage to the frosty season will feature music, dance and folklore from 19th century Bavaria as California Revels explores the very roots of modern Christmas, with song, dance, storytelling, and the blessings of children and laughter.

The talented ensemble of more than 70 performers includes Revels’ Artistic Associates, Shira Kammen on fiddle and song-leader Wendell Brooks along with an adult chorus and children’s chorus, the Revels Brass Ensemble and the Golden Ring Morris Men. Sankt Nikolaus (Robert Sicular) and his sometimes alarming and always-unpredictable helper Knecht Rupprecht (James Galileo) are sure to make an appearance, and of course the audience also gets into the act!

One doesn’t just “go to” the Revels; they participate throughout the entire performance! Each year, Revelers of all ages come together to sing 3-part carols and rounds, enjoy grand chorale works, Morris dancing, a German Sussex Mummers play and more – and then dance out into the lobby with the cast for The Lord of the Dance, Revels’ signature piece and a highpoint of every performance.

The California Revels have brought since 1986 the unique theatrical, participatory arts-form founded by singer, author and music educator John Langstaff in Cambridge, Massachusetts to the audiences of the Bay Area. Crossing religious and ethnic boundaries and appealing to young and old alike, Revels blends traditional music, dance, ritual and folk plays, presented by a large volunteer chorus of children and adults drawn from the community, and a number of highly talented professional actors, musicians, artists, directors, and “bearers of tradition” from many cultures. It is a winning combination that is personally uplifting and theatrically engaging – the critically-acclaimed Christmas Revels has been named among the “Top 10 Theater Events of the Year”.

Hi, I live in Nob Hill and am looking for a place to have a garage sale. I have a ton of really good stuff to sell--mid-century modern furniture, lamps, glass ware, vintage clothes, records, pulp paperbacks etc--that attract buyers and I would be happy to do all the work--cleaning, arranging, sitting all day and watching the stuff...I have tons of "sale-ing" experience so hopefully you would not only get rid of unwanted items, you would make some nice x-mas money too.

I'm hoping to not have go too far from Huntington Park cause I don't have a car but I am flexible. I am also super responsible and totally hard-working and trustworthy...I will not make a mess of you place and I will make the signs and do all the promotion.

If you are interested...please contact me ASAP!

PS I am totally flexible about the date too...

Berkeley Poetry SLAM! (berkeley)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BERZERKELEY POETRY SLAM --Next Slam: EVERY WEDS.
Ekabhumi checks in:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

---THIS WEEK: Dec 2: THE GREAT POET SWAP! Anyone can sign up, but poets who perform a poem written in the style of another local poet get priority on the signup list. $150 Cash Prizes. Hosts: Joshua & Betsy Gomez, with Live Jazz by 3 Blind Mice. Plus cool Irish beer, fresh pizza, and metaphorical mayhem!

---- JOSHUA SAYS GOODBYE: “My last time hosting the Berkeley Slam is tonight which coincides with a blow out special themed event where poets imper- sonate each other's style, making for comedy galore. I'm stepping down as I just got a artist in resi- dency at the Climate Theatre and will be producing new solo work in SF starting in the new year.

--- “Get ready for a night of unforgettable, ridiculous performances—with the most distinctive voices in the Bay Area coming together to try on each other’s voices! Part homage, part creative challenge, and all-around great time for audience and performers alike, this open slam will have poets coming to the stage with material written and performed in the style of another local slam poet. It’s going to be a night of non-stop verbal acrobatics, hilarity, and surprises, with each poet doing their best to capture the spirit of another’s work. If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like to hear Oakland’s 2009 Grand Slam Champion Joyce Lee rip a poem as local loudmouth, emcee extraordinaire, and seasoned veteran Jamie DeWolf— or if that just sounds like a lot of fun now that you’re thinking about it—don’t let yourself miss this slam!”

---- FEATURING: The American Indian poet known as Luke Warm Water was born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota, and is an Oglala Lakota (Sioux). Luke has featured at poetry venues throughout the United States and in Europe, and has won Poetry Slam competitions from Oregon to Germany. Since 2005, Luke has been awarded three grants for his poetry endeavors. Recent poetry books are Iktomi’s Uprising (2007) and On Indian Time (2005). Luke currently resides in northern California (What Luke’s bio doesn’t tell you is that he’s not only a talent poet, he’s got a great sense of humor. –ed).

---- TEAM SEASON has begun! Each time you finish in the top 5, you get points toward our Semifinals, to be held next spring. Top 5 poets win a free trip to the National Poetry Slam, representing Berkeley on the big stage!

---- LAST WEEK: Over 100 in the house, sitting on the ground, responding with high energy and having lots of fun. The Sock Puppet Slam was a big success, with 8 puppeteers. Some of the puppets were adorable and creative, though a couple were lame, truth be told. Winning the slam was Forward, and it was FANTASTIC to see him back on stage, after his horrific Halloween car accident. Despite (or because of) the cane and frail composure, he earned a VERY RARE perfect 60. Seriously, I can count on one hand the number of times we've had a poet get a perfect score on both rounds. Damn impressive! Lucky 7 finished 2nd doing “team” pieces by using puppets on both hands. Caligula 6 did ACTUAL team pieces for 3rd, so it was a night of creative diversity on the mic. And our feature Mike McGee... what more is there to say? Everyone knows he's the shit. He gave us a brilliant 30-minute set that had folks alternately pondering and laughing their asses off! This makes two weeks in a row of absolutely amazing slams. Yay!
1. Forward 60
2. Team Schmolive (Lucky 7) 59.8
3. Caligula 6 (Lee and Melisa) 59.7
4. Trashcanpoet 59.5
5. Amani Johnson 59.4

---- UPCOMING:
----Dec 9: Open Slam. $150 Cash Prizes. Featuring: Seattle’s legendary Buddy Wakefield. Hosts: Lucky 7 & Betsy Gomez, with Live Jazz by: 3 Blind Mice.

----Dec 16: Open Slam. $150 Cash Prizes. Featuring: Columbus’ Will Evans. Hosts: Jamie De Wolf & Betsy Gomez, with Live Beatbox by: Syzygy.

Affordable acupuncture for weight loss, stress relief, and more (santa rosa)

Tonight, Wednesday, at 6:30 PM, there will be a community acupuncture session at the Saxena Clinic (633 Fourth Street, Suite H--between Santa Rosa Avenue and D Street, up the stairway to the right of La Vera Pizza). The suggested fee is $20 per person.

At each session, several patients will be seated at the same time with each patient receiving the same acupuncture protocol. The NADA protocol (so-named because it was originally developed by the founder of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association for use in the treatment of drug addiction) has been reported to have a wide range of benefits--including:

-a reduction in the PTSD symptoms of military veterans and trauma survivors

-improved sleep

-better stress management

-weight loss and diminished food cravings

-lowered blood pressure

-a more optimistic outlook and improved energy

-smoking cessation and cessation of other addictions and addictive behaviors, and

-alleviation of depression and anxiety.

If you are looking for help with any of the above concerns, this session is a safe and affordable place to start.

Patients typically report a sense of relaxation and improved well-being during and after the treatments. The needles are remarkably small--about the thickness of a human hair--and are inserted into the outer ear.

You will want to plan between 30 minutes and an hour for your treatment, and I can provide you with a voucher for free parking if you park at any of the downtown garages.

Walk-ins are welcome--but seating is limited, so I suggest that you email or call ahead to guarantee your space.

Looking forward to seeing you at the clinic!

Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm's Annual Winter Faire is an opportunity for young and old to share in an old-fashioned holiday outing. This year's faire features crafting activities such as beeswax candle dipping, gingerbread cookie decorating, evergreen swag-making, and other projects using natural fibers. The traditional holiday puppet show is always a joy for young children. And a homemade hearty lunch and holiday desserts will be available for purchase. Keith Hennessy announces details of his 2009 - 2010 season, which runs December 9, 2009 through January 31, 2010. Keith Hennessy’s A Queer 20th Anniversary will be a retrospective of two seminal pieces performed by Keith Hennessy & company including SALIVA (1989)— A restaging at the original site under a freeway South of Market in San Francisco (12/13/09), a talk & video presentation a few days before the performance (12/9/09) with a panel including artists Kirk Read and Philip Huang to discuss gay men, queer performance and AIDS, then & now - presented by Shaping SF as part of the Art + Politics TALK series at CounterPULSE; and HOW TO DIE (2005 - 06) — A performance by Keith Hennessy with Jules Beckman & Seth Eisen at Dance Mission Theatre (1/15 - 17/10). A highlight of the season will be the West Coast Premiere of CROTCH (all the Joseph Beuys references in the world…)(2008) — A performance by
Keith Hennessy at Dance Mission (1/29 - 31/10). CROTCH had its US premiere at NY’s Dance Theater Workshop in April 2009, garnering much acclaim by NY critics: “an outré, charged solo” - NY Times.
The season is rounded out with TOO MUCH! A queer marathon: 10 hours of performance, video, a dinner hour, a make-out room, & a dance party, co-produced with and staged at Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory in SF (1/10/10). For info please call 415/401-9376.

Keith Hennessy’s A Queer 20th Anniversary celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hennessy’s coming out
solo performance SALIVA, with a full season of events including performances, publications, and a queer performance marathon. The performances — one premiere and two restaged works - will be complimented by both teaching and archive projects. All will be marked by a complex approach to socially-conscious autobiography and the evolution of an accessible, subversive and queer voice. Additionally the season highlights grassroots arts spaces and their contributions to aesthetic experimentation and community organizing in San Francisco.
Co-Presented by Shaping SF as part of the Art + Politics TALK series at CounterPULSE

20 years ago Keith Hennessy created SALIVA, an interdisciplinary dance-performance-ritual under a freeway in downtown San Francisco. Deep within the rage and grief of the AIDS crisis, Hennessy performed a ritualistic reclamation of the body, the queer male body, as holy. SALIVA was also presented at Highways in LA, was featured in the national gay magazine The Advocate (1990), and has since inspired chapters in two academic books: Gay Ideas by Richard Mohr (1992) and How To Make Dances in an Epidemic, the landmark study of AIDS and dance by David Gere (2004). Since 1989 Hennessy has created ten full-evening solo performances (while performing in and/or directing several noted collaborative companies). All of his work has been presented in San Francisco except CROTCH (2008). Since 1998 Hennessy’s work has also been commissioned and presented in Europe, mostly France.

Do you know how to sell yourself? SFPCN's November 10 program, “Take Command of Your Job Search through Informational Interviewing,” was well attended and highly regarded. Although not explicitly stated that day, the skills necessary for securing informational interviews in many respects parallel those required to be successful as a consultative sales person. This week’s program, "Selling: A Simple Plan," is meant to expand the discussion and provide a basic framework for selling yourself effectively by creating and executing a targeted plan. The program will provide you with an outline of each of the steps necessary for creating your own plan and will be interactive with Q & A encouraged as we walk through each segment.

Leading the discussion will be Gary Kowalski, this Group’s Founder and Organizer. As Sales Team Leader with Parson Consulting, Gary used consultative sales techniques to successfully establish and expand client relationships with C-level executives of companies such as JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, L’Oreal, and TIAA-CREF, and over a two-year period was ranked #4 and #1 out of a team of more than 60 sales people nationally. Gary also created a Sales training guide that was used nationally by the firm.
If you have a camera, bring it as there will be live music and most likely some interaction with the UC enforcement of their policies. Cameras do improve the accountability of law enforcement. Cop Watch will be present. We live in the park because we love to Steward it and to appreciate it as well as to participate in its user created format. Our community is so alive and full of creative and expressive beings. There will be a Wing Nut Fashion Show courtesy of the free box.
As one of the nation’s top film schools, San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking (SFSDF) is a leader in the training and development of independent filmmakers, film actors, and screenwriters.

From its inception, SFSDF has dedicated itself to the re-imagination of the film school model and to building a more creative and educational environment, which puts students at the center of the experience. We nurture an aspiring filmmaker’s indie aesthetic spark while providing the critical hands-on training necessary to have a successful career in the film and new media industries.

This Thursday evening, come tour our facilities, talk with the faculty about our unique hands-on, digital filmmaking program, our film acting program, or our screenwriting workshops and enjoy refreshments and meet other aspiring filmmakers!
