We have a room in our 5-person house opening up on December first. $600/month, plus utilities. The house is roughly in the Temescal area (Aileen and Genoa), and is near the F, 18, 15, and 88 bus lines (the 1 line is about a 7 minute walk, too).

The medium-sized room is on the ground floor, with its own private entrance, and a small foyer-like room that doubles as a closet. The room is attached to a massive bathroom, about as large as the room itself (it is the only bathroom in the house that you do not have to go through a bedroom to get to, so it serves as the "public" bathroom for when we have visitors, but it will be mostly yours).

The house is quite large, if oddly put together. In addition to the five bedrooms, there is an obscene amount of common space: we have a living room upstairs ("the parlor") with huge bay windows looking onto the street, a cozy living room downstairs ("the den") with couches and a tv, a dining room, a huge kitchen, a laundry room (laundry is free), a study, and a "dirty room" that currently houses bike parts, tools, and random boxes.

Those of us who are left in the house are all in our mid to late 20s, and are all graduate students at Berkeley (two law students, a sociologist and an historian). We are currently three men and one woman. We are all generally busy, but we are a fun crew. Visitors are welcome (encouraged, in fact), and while sometimes some parts of the house get loud, the place is so big it is really easy to find quiet when you need it. We share some basic foods, but keep mostly separate (and have two fridges to facilitate this).

For Our Six-Bedroom Household We're Seeking a Sixth Housemate

Our house is at 63rd Street and Telegraph Avenue in North Oakland, next to the Rockridge District. Safeway is nearby, Wholefoods, and, a little further but walkable, Berkeley Bowl. Lots of shops are on College in Rockridge and Claremont. We're a block from two Ethiopian restaurants, and 100 feet from a nice Thai place. There's a corner store a block away, a bookstore next to that, and a cleaner's next to that. We're a 14-minute walk from Rockridge Bart, maybe twenty minutes' walk from Ashby Bart, and a longer jaunt from MacArthur Bart. We're a minute's walk from the 1R bus line, offering rapid service between Downtown Berkeley and Downtown Oakland and beyond every weekday. We're right by the 51 and the 18 too.

The neighborhood is old, with many long-term homeowners and a fair number of kids. We're down the block from an elementary school (which is inaudible) and a couple blocks from Bushrod Park a large city athletic park with tennis courts, a large soccer field, and indoor basketball courts. Where Rickey Henderson got his start, it's told.

It's not a far walk from the running track at the top of Dwight Avenue in Berkeley, and close to the Claremont Resort.

But the neighborhood itself is not loud or busy, and not so far into Rockridge that you feel like you're insulated from the rest of the East Bay.

There are two Laundromats not far from our house--about 6 blocks--although we're looking to have a small washer/dryer installed soon.

The physical house is a Craftsman two-storey with a kitchen upstairs and downstairs. We have medium-sized yards in the front, side, and back. We may have a garden going by the time you see the place. I'm planning on digging the backyard when I finish this.

There is a large garage in the backyard that we use for storage, and to keep our bikes in.

The room that is available is upstairs. There is LOTS of natural light, two walls are mostly windows. There is no closet, but the room comes with a wardrobe and a large set of drawers (which you don't have to keep if you don't want).

IMPORTANT: this room is that it is the only entrance to the house's sixth bedroom. This means that one of the roommates, Nova, will need to cross through this bedroom to get to hers. Please do NOT apply if you don't think you will be okay with this.

We roommates are: Elizabeth, a young woman in the science fiction book publishing business; Mike Klopot, a young man in the I.T. field who works for a local non-profit; Nova, a young woman who just got back from a stint working on organic farms in Hawai'i; Sabira, a young teacher and non-profit coordinator working with young children; and Kevin, a young man working with adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. Mike and I (Kevin) have been friends for 11 years, and all of us are friends in the house. Nova first lived in the house a year ago, moved away, then moved back in recently. I'm just saying this to give you a sense of the vibe. We live in a home, not just a house.

What we're looking for in you is someone who's conscientious, sociable, and cooperative. We want someone who is committed to living here for about a year, at least!

We have house meetings about every month, though this schedule may change. It's in flux at the moment. We share chores and some food (though sharing of food is optional, and we're figuring this out at the moment). We make decisions in a cooperative way, so cooperative experience may be a plus.

Utilities run around $50, and include water, gas, electricity, trash, internet, and phone.

We are more-or-less a quiet house. Things tend to wind down in the common areas around 10 at night.

One housemate is early in recovery from substance abuse, so we are very cautious about the alcohol/drug-using habits of any prospective housemate.

Our house is rented, with a year lease that was last signed this summer, which you'd be asked to sign.

Rent is $495 per month.

Seven of us live under one roof, 4 guys and three ladies (of which I am one). Yes, that might seem excessive, but it works. Everybody has different schedules. Even though there is a lot of movement in the house, it remains very clean, which is a group effort. What mess you have in your room is your business as long as it doesn't stink. A couple of us have the bad habit of smoking but never in the house. 420 and cocktail friendly, but never a lot of huge parties to worry about. No restrictions on the food you eat or cook. We have vegetarians, a raw vegan and bacon lovers. Rent is month to month, but we are looking for someone who wants to stick around for a while. Most of us have been living here for over a year! We would really like somebody that is social and open minded, likes to hang out with others, and doesn't hide in their room.

Only caveats: NO COUPLES and NO PETS.

The Roommates:

Ages from 23 - 34. PhD student (1), Post Docs (1) and young professionals (4). We enjoy cooking together while blasting some tunes, rockin' out at a concert, dancing and singing in the large living room, gardening together, practicing poi in the yard, watching a flick or climbing our neighborhood rock to watch the sunset.

The Room:

The room is quite large (I currently have a bed, desk, dresser, and loveseat in there). Share clean bathroom with 2 males. One HUGE closet (it's really huge), hardwood floors, a big window. The room is on the second floor, and is the quietest room in the house.

The House:

The house is fully furnished, so you would only need room furnishings. Large kitchen, dining room, breakfast nook, spacious living room with bay windows (amazing views of the Bay and of the Golden Gate Bridge) and fireplace, washer/dryer, driveway parking (with overflow street parking, no permit needed), bus stop in front of house, backyard (with a lemon tree and hammock), wireless internet, and utilities are not included (runs about $40.00 summer - $100.00 winter).

The Area:

Very safe; less than 2 miles from campus, Downtown Berkeley, BART subway to Oakland, Walnut Creek, and San Francisco. Close to the famous "gourmet ghetto" food and shopping area as well as Solano Ave; also less than 2 miles from hiking at Tilden Park.

To me, a home is far more than walls, DSL and misc other crap -- it's a place that has ENERGY, INSPIRATION and a certain MAGIC about it. In terms of the place, neighborhood, and the people.

That's why I tend to gravitate toward north berkeley!!

now I just need the right person, and it'll be a dream come true ;)

so, don't put me to sleep with a boring reply, and we'll create a kick-ass household!!

ok, let me get the practical crap-a-doodle out of the way first:

* it's an unfurnished room in a 2-bd/2-bath place

* in north berkeley (or maybe it's officially in albany?)

* about a mile from the Cal campus and downtown berkeley. I can walk it easily; a gorgeous walk (or bike ride)!

* yes, tubs and showers -- and, radical, even hot water -- are included in both bathrooms =)

* yes, there's DSL -- so, go ahead, you can be on facebook 24/7 (don't forget to post daily snapshots of your breakfast leftovers...)

* yes, a washing machine and drier are included -- and they're not coin operated :)

* no, the toilets aren't coin-operated, either : so, a bout of stomach problems won't cost you a fortune LOL

* there probably won't be too many stomach problems, anyway, because I keep things reasonably clean in the kitchen and -- may the Saints help us -- so will you. (I'm not anal about it.)

* small backyard included, woohoo! enough space for halloween graves next year, without having to murder the flowers in the process...

* bedrooms and living room are reasonably spacious, IMHO

* the place seems in decent condition. landlord is in the process of doing some extra fixing up.

* electricity/etc shared, and expected to add $50-75 to everyone's bill

Now, onto the best part, namely me and you =)

I'm a self-employed male artist who likes to transcend the unbearable mundane of existence. I'm personally off drugs (including nicotine) and into healthy living.

I'm easygoing and generally don't judge others : feel free to worship Satan, if you must LOL (If you get tired of Satan, you can hire me as your Guru...)

I'm fine with every kind of eating habits, as long as you don't eat people or pets.

Speaking of pets, I have no pets, other than my girlfriends -- and they don't pee on the floor (if they do, it'd be in my room.)
