My 81 year old mother has informed me that having a dog is a �quality of life� need for her. She moved out here several years ago after my father died and has been happily living across the street from us and our dog. This was a wonderful arrangement. Unfortunately, because of her mobility it became unsafe for her to live on her own. Sadly, our house is not accessible. However, she has a wonderful long-time caregiver who recently bought a beautiful, spacious house with a large, enclosed yard and is turing it into a small residential care facility (3 seniors and 2 caregivers.) They have promised my mother a dog and now I am going about trying to find her the right one.
The dog we are looking for is mature, mid-low energy (they go out for walks in the wheelchair and we have a great dogwalker as well) easy-going, mellow, affectionate, soulful, and must be good with kids,other dogs and cats. The dog needs to be adequately trained, good in cars, housebroken and not have issues that simple love and companionship can't heal. We are open to size, though we are leaning toward mid-sized, and age, although "maturity is preferable. Senior dogs with a good 5 years or so left in them definitely considered, even favored.
My mother is the consumate dog lover. She has cared for and loved dogs for over 60 years. She has a certain soul-loneliness that I think only a dog can heal. Any dog would be blessed to share her heart, her love and, no doubt, her bed.
Should anything happen to my mother I would assume care of her dog.(I have a dog and 2 cats.) I will also be responsible for vet visits, etc.

My two adorable cats need a home for 3 weeks. I can pay someone $15/day if they are willing to take them in temporarily. I am moving up to Seattle on August 16 (that's when my lease starts) and they need a place to stay until then. My sublet won't allow cats (I couldn't find a temporary situation that did) and my neighbor had agreed to watch them, and has been taking good care of them until now. However, a new roommate has just moved into the place with a cat of her own, and she doesn't want other cats there. My cats are really well behaved. Lizzy is 6 years old and Annie is 3 years old. They just need some love, a comforting place to sleep, and to be fed, given fresh water, and have their litter box changed. I could even do all of these things myself if you just offered the place for them to sleep and allowed me to come over every day. Please help me out if you can. Martin needs a foster home, can you please help this sweet dog? If so, please call Home at Last Rescue: 510.237.1625 Thank you! Martin has been described as "a lovely dog." Indeed. He is a big boy with a big heart. This pooch did well on his temperament test and could be placed in a home with older children (due to his size) and possibly a cat (with proper management). He appears to like both male and female dogs.

Martin always eager to say hello with the wag of his tail on a walk. He's very attentive to his handler and eager to please. He's pretty strong so training will be in order. Because Martin is so smart and willing to please, he is a good candidate for positive reinforcement training. He already knows "sit" and "down." Martin is housebroken and crate-trained as well. Martin may not have had the best life prior to showing up at the shelter but he's now in a TEMPORARY foster home, but we have high hopes for his chances of flourishing in a forever home. This boy wants to please!

Unfortunetely our Yorkie (1 year+ old) was in a accident this week which had left him near dead. The doctors had given up on him but he has progressed to being able to recognize whom is around him. He is also able to walk gingerly for short periods. The extent of his injuries is unknown even to the doctors or if he will ever be the same. The only way I can describe the aftermath of his injuries is that his motor skills are slow but have progressed slowly. It breaks my heart but I have to find Brighton a new home,because of my work schedule I can not care for him in the capacity which is needed. We will be very "Picky" in choosing a new home for him. It seems so tragic to me to see a senior animal in a shelter, this is particularly tragic because this boy was a stray, having to make it on his own WITH A BROKEN LEG, while other senior dogs are in the lap of luxury. The poor boy's broken leg has had an x ray and been wrapped. What an end to a dog that was a loyal friend to someone, he was neutered and this required some thought and concern. A dog like him deserves a good ending and not a euthanasia in a shelter. There has to be some other alternative.
He is located in HUMBOLDT COUNTY and could be transported to the bay area or other locations. PLEASE help this senior boy!!

Nora is a petite girl (approx. 35 lbs.) who would rather curl up in your lap and get some loving, rather than cavort with a fellow canine. She is spayed, housebroken, and crate trained and is used to being home alone, during the day. She has had some training and knows basic commands. This attractive, soft-coated girl would make a wonderful companion to someone looking for a quiet, gentle dog on the smaller side, who is easy to handle, very well-behaved, and most endearingly, as generous with her affection as she is needful of it. (She adores being held while on your lap!) She is very calm, especially for a young dog, but is playful as well! As you can see in the pic below, she loves her ball... so much that she fell asleep with it in her mouth. Nora is a little shy with new people, but really bonds quickly and loves her family. She would be fine with older children, but may be too shy for little ones. She is best placed as an only dog or with a well-socialized, mellow yet playful male dog. Rescue Dog "Chief" Needs A Home!!! (oakland west)

This is Chief and he needs a home! I rescued him from the Pinole Animal Shelter just an hour before he scheduled to be put to sleep! Before he got sent to the nasty shelter, him and his sister Brittney were abandoned by their owner at the boarding facility that I work at. They spent 6 weeks there before being sent
to death row. So I had them both pulled from the shelter. I have been fostering Chief and Brittany has been living the life at a friends house. He is 6 years old, American Stafforshire possible Boxer mix. He came to the kennel very overweight at 85 lbs, the owner was free feeding him. In his time there he lost 10 lbs and I have him on a diet right now. He's looking very handsome! He definitely needs to go on some long walks! He is great on a leash, responsive and obedient. He is adorable and is always smiling and he does this cute thing with his paw that gets us every time. Rescue Dog "Chief" Needs a Home!!! (oakland west)

This is Chief and he needs a home! I rescued him from the Pinole Animal Shelter just an hour before he scheduled to be put to sleep! Before he got sent to the nasty shelter, him and his sister Brittney were abandoned by their owner at the boarding facility that I work at. (you can read Brittney's posting at http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pet/767108092.html)They spent 6 weeks there before being sent to death row. So I had them both pulled from the shelter. I have been fostering Chief and Brittany has been living the life at a friends house. He is 6 years old, American Staffordshire possible Boxer mix. He came to the kennel very overweight at 85 lbs, the owner was free feeding him. In his time there he lost 10 lbs and I have him on a diet right now. He's looking very handsome! He definitely needs to go on some long walks! He is great on a leash, responsive and obedient. He is adorable and is always smiling and he does this cute thing with his paw that gets us every time, and he lays with his back legs sprawled straight out!! Why do people get a PUPPY for their children only to find out that the puppy is "to much" or the child is "to rough" or "irresponsible". Why don't these people get an older more mature dog?! I adopted this lovely, purebred Persian girl a couple of years ago, and she's a delightful kitty that I love very much. She'll be 3 years old in Oct/Nov of this year. Unfortunately, she has special needs that I don't have the time nor the space to accommodate. She came to me as a cat with litterbox avoidance issues. I thought I could change her, but have never had more than a 50% success rate.

As much as I'd love to keep her, this problem is too much for this tiny apartment. This cat needs a home with either enough spare floor space (i.e., spare bathroom, garage, large pantry, etc.) to accommodate her indiscretions, or else possibly more ideally, a home with a kitty-door and a fenced yard or screened-in porch.

She also needs someone who is devoted to meticulous grooming, because this cat grows a HUGE coat! She needs a thorough combing-out at least once a day. (She's currently about half-grown-out from a summer "lion" cut.) Her flat face means her eyes water frequently, and she needs daily face-washing. She likes my other kitty, but she HATES dogs, and is too sensitive for a home with small children.

PROS:
- This kitty is BEAUTIFUL!
- She's extremely HEALTHY, still quite young at 2-1/2, and a lot more active than the usual Persian. (If she weren't a purebred Persian, I'd think she's part Bengal!) She will play with you with a string all day long, if she can.
- She's a fearless HUNTER OF BUGS, and will keep your home almost completely spider-free!
- She likes to sleep on the bed with you most nights (unless it's really hot.)
- She has a very tiny voice, and isn't very vocal.
- She is very good about being bathed and having her claws trimmed.
- She's a good eater and drinker, and loves Petromalt hairball remedy paste.

CONS:
- The obvious... she uses the floor right next to her litter box about 50% of the time. :(
- She isn't a "lap cat"... prefers not to be held for too long, and doesn't like being groomed while sitting in your lap. (Prefers to stand on a desk or table, instead, so it's really not too much of an issue.) She DOES like to be near you, though.
- She is a slightly dominant cat, and likes to play with others by stalking, chasing, & wrestling. A good thing, if she has a young, equally active playmate. Not so good for my other, older, couch-potato kitty!

A small rehoming fee of $35 applies if she is adopted. Miles is a 4 1/2 month old german shepherd pup who's previous owner kept him tied in the backyard and fed him nothing but white rice, what a boring life! Luckily for Miles,his owner decided that he didn't want the puppy and dumped him with his neighbor, a co-worker of mine who called me asap. I have been fostering Miles for 2 weeks and he's doing great. He now is free of fleas, worms and ticks and i have had him neutered, brought up to date on shots and thoroughly vet checked. Miles was under-socialized with other dogs when he came to me and he has improved drastically, but he will still bark sometimes when he sees another dog, especially when he's on-leash. Miles continues to improve and I have no doubt that he will completely stop this behavior soon. Miles loves my two dogs and plays non stop with them, he also loves the dogpark and we go hiking off-leash in the hills almost every day. Miles makes a great running and hiking buddy and can more than keep up, his ideal home would have another dog and athletic parents! Miles had never been in a house before coming to stay with me but he is now about 70% housetrained and is pretty good in a crate. He has learned how to "sit" and is trained to walk with the headcollar while on-leash so he won't pull. My vet says that Miles will be about 75-80lbs when full grown so training is a must! The vet also says that he is a purebred shepherd and that his ears will stand all the way up soon, he's gonna be one handsome boy! I am hoping to find Miles a home with another dog and with someone with puppy or german shepherd experience, please tell me about yourself if you are interested in meeting this special boy. Thanks!

Got a great selection of wonderful fun loving, sweet and purring cats from young to older available to good homes at the Berkeley animal shelter at 2013 2nd St. by Aquatic park, just one block south of University Ave. exit off I-80, west of RR tracks. 510-981 6600 "0".

Check out the young pair of lovers, Saffron and Buster in cage S (as in Sam) or some of the other wonderful cats and/or kittens or teenagers here. Some are in/outdoor combo, others best indoors only.

$75 fee includes microchip, shots and fixing.

BERKELEY HAS THE BEST CATS! Plus lost and found cats and dogs from Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville and Piedmont come to the Berkeley shelter, which is a low kill shelter. However, whenver the shelter cat room is full like now, some may be euthanized to allow for new cats to come in ESPECIALLY since Mayor Bates didn't give us our new shelter voters voted for money in 2002 to build on a new bigger site with more room especially for cats. Complain to him or better yet, vote for Shirley Dean for the new Mayor, and adopt a cat from the shelter to make room for more. Often most at risk are older cats, ones that have been at the shelter a long time, sometimes a bonded two-some, and shy or semi feral.

This editorial is not by a city employee of the shelter but by a citizen who loves animals. Do not complain to the city or shelter if you do not agree as they are not responsible for this post.

Hi, My dear friend died and left her cats and neighborhood strays she fixed and fed and loved. They won't do well in a cage at the shelter so I am looking for the right indoor/outdoor homes for a bonded pair (white and black, tabby); a solo white with black tail (needs some shade in day time sun) and another solo cat a black spry girl who likes to dance and prance around; and a calico with tabby who climbs trees and wants lots of human interaction. Actually, they all do. The black and calico girls are ok with mellow other non alpha male cats. Note: Some are a bit shy at first so some experience with shy or feral cats helpful. Hello...A woman who transported cats a few weeks ago for lake county saw these two kitties, a handsome gray and white male and his sibling, a black female kitty. It was cleaning time at the shelter and these two cats were so docile and calm as they sat in a small cage during cleaning time. She found it so hard to leave these two behind. Her coat is silky & shiny (she's gotten many compliments) and has the cutest little white paws with tan freckles. She knows most basic commands (sit, stay, laydown, rollover, come, off, leave it). She is also crate trained & housebroken!
