Title: 4 AmeriCorps Employment Readiness Facilitators
Service Hours: 2 Part-time (900 hours) & 2 Full-time (1700 hours)
Start Date: Temporary 11-month Entry Level Position beginning November 23, 2009 and ending no later than September 30, 2010

Program Summary
The Heart of Eden AmeriCorps program will engage 15 full-time and 15 half-time Members in providing employment-related services to at least 840 at-risk youth and young adults in the underserved Eden Area of Alameda County, and in providing volunteer opportunities for youth and adults in the community. Twenty-eight Members will serve in employment programs targeting youth and young adults who need additional supports in completing their education and finding part-time or full-time employment. Service activities will include providing peer mentoring, assisting clients to develop an individualized education and employment plan, helping them connect to support services, and providing workplace readiness skills training. As a result of our program, we anticipate that at least 20% of the highest need youth and young adults served (including individuals returning from incarceration in juvenile or adult facilities) will obtain employment by the end of the program year
Major Duties
Direct Service includes but is not limited to:
Recruit targeted individuals for program participation, workshops, and other activities by developing and distributing outreach materials, directly contacting targeted community members, networking with appropriate community organizations, and utilizing the broadcast and print media
Design and facilitate 6 weeks Employment Readiness workshops
Conducting interviews and collecting and organizing workshop materials
Main high level of retention through monitoring enrollment and recruiting new youth
Case management services include but are not limited to intakes, assessments, crisis intervention, community referrals, and regular appointments to assist participants meet their employment goals
Manage a caseload of youth who are at risk of dropping out of school and young adults who are ex-offenders and who are residents of the Unincorporated areas of Alameda County (San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Hayward, Fremont & Newark)
Keep case files and all other record keeping up-to-date, thorough and accurate
Assess clients work readiness, make referrals, and provide job search skills training as appropriate
Create and maintain job listings
Develop contacts with potential employers
Maintain professional relationships with referral agencies
Communicate with supervisors, administrators, and program staff on an ongoing basis to meet the needs of the program
Maintain close professional relationships and liaisons with local service organizations, businesses and schools in the target area. Make presentations regarding the services of assigned programs to ensure that appropriate referrals are made to ACAP programs
Develop and maintain a resource file of available social service agencies and assistance providers in the target area for use in referring clients for needed services
Complete client records to include eligibility documents, assessment forms, information and referral logs, and other records as assigned
Respond to clients requests for assistance by assessing service needs and providing direct intervention, information, and referral services as appropriate
Follow-up on referrals in order to assess outcomes and provide additional services as required
Provide participant advocacy services to assist participants in receiving needed services and to develop additional resources for services
Coordinate with other internal and external staff and programs so that opportunities for participants can be maximized
Use appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions; understand and utilize available technology as client service, communication, and data gathering tools
Maintain files and records of individuals served, services provided, outreach activities conducted, surveys completed, and other general reporting as assigned
Perform related duties as assigned by site manager
Member Development:
Attend Pre-Service Orientation and Training
Attend weekly Staff Development trainings
Attend a monthly meeting/training with AmeriCorps Management team
Secondary Duties
Positively represent the program in a variety of settings, including partner sites, community meetings or fairs, trainings, and service events.
Work Environment
Duties take place most of the time out in the community, and occasionally at a partner agency or site
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors, as well as some weekend hours
Schedule Requirement
Part-time commitment with a minimum of 900 hours will require that a consistent schedule of 15-20 hours per week is maintained over the course of 10-11 months
Full-time commitment with a minimum of 1700 hours will require that a consistent schedule of 35-40 hours per week is maintained over the course of 10-11 months
Schedules will be put together by AmeriCorps Program Manager and member
If a member is requesting a revision to the schedule, the AmeriCorps Program Manager must be notified at least 2 weeks in advance and a valid justification must be provided
Minimum Qualifications
An interest and/or a background in community service and volunteerism
Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree preferred but not required
Willingness to undergo a state criminal background check and National Sex Offender Public Registry check
Ability to create positive relationship with youth, community, staff, and partners
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks
Possess leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the team
Ability to problem-solve and approach situations creatively
Mental / Emotional Agility Requirements
Must be able to adapt to change in work environment, accept criticism and feedback, effectively handle multiple tasks and competing demands, work cooperatively in group situations, and work actively to resolve conflicts.

Extensive use of the computer
Provide proof that s/he is a US Citizen, a US National, or a Legal Permanent Resident and is at least 17 years of age at the time of sign-up
Provide proof of completion of High School or equivalent, or in the process of obtaining a GED certificate
Employee or Volunteer Displacement
Members are not allowed to perform an employees duties or otherwise displace employees or volunteers at any time, including when employees/volunteers are sick, on maternity leave, and/or have been terminated by the agency.
Prohibited Activities
Attempting to influence legislation
Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes
Assisting, promoting or deterring union organizing
Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements
Engaging in partisan political activities or other activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parities, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials
Engaging in religious instruction; conducting worship services; providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship; constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship; or engaging in any form of religious proselytization
Providing a direct benefit to:
o A for-profit entity;
o A labor union;
o A partisan political organization;
o An organization engaged in the religious activities described in the preceding subclause, unless Grant funds are not used to support religious activities; or
o A nonprofit entity that fails to comply with the restrictions contained in section 501(c) (3) of the U.S. Code Title 26
o Voter registration drives
o Other activities that the Corporation determines will be prohibited, upon notice to the member
Living Allowance and Education Award
Part-Time
During their term of service, part-time members will receive a modest living allowance. For the 2009-10 program year, the living allowance for part-time members is $6,200.00.
In addition to the living allowance, all part-time members who complete a term of service will receive a Segal Education Award (valued at $2,362.50 for part-time members).
Full-time
During their term of service, full-time members receive a modest living allowance. For the 2009-2010 program year, the living allowance for full-time members is $12,400.00.
In addition to the living allowance, all members who complete a term of service receive a Segal Education Award (valued at $4,725 for full-time members).
