1) SPOKEN ENGLISH

* Tutoring is done in downtown Berkeley on the Cal campus at a cafe or in a library--U. C. Berkeley and Berkeley Public Libraries are available.

* I offer private, one on one lessons, although group rates are available.

* I work very intensively on the proper pronunciation of the 44 main sounds of the English Language. I give detailed but easy to understand descriptions of how the sounds are made. I have designed handouts with diagrams explain the basic parts of the mouth, and how English sounds are made by moving the tongue, lips, jaw, etc.

* I teach proper intonation, rhythm, and stress as well as word grouping. In spoken English you've probably noticed how some words have very short pauses or no pauses between them.

* I will provide handouts, web links, and other resources to help you with everything described above as well as with slang, informal, and colloquial speech.

* I will make written and recorded study material available to you in the form of PDF (acrobat) text documents and MP3 files (audio files for Ipods, MP3 players, computers, etc.) so you can practice at home, on the bus, etc. When listening to these files at home, I encourage you to record yourself with a tape or voice recorder, so you can check yourself against the MP3 files

Oral Presentation Assistance for ESL Students

* I encourage you to bring a tape recorder to class so you can record my voice for practice at home. Some of my grad students and PhDs have me help them with their preparations for oral presentations and speeches. First we sit down together and correct the vocabulary and grammar. Next we go over the pronunciation of difficult words. I recommend that you record my pronunciation of these words for future practice. Finally, I record the whole presentation for my clients so they can take it home and practice pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, stress, etc.


2) WRITTEN ENGLISH

* I can help you understand written English, including the news, novels, magazines, professional and legal documents, etc.

* I taught writing at U. C. Berkeley for five years and am a good writer and teacher. I can teach you how to write proper English prose and edit your papers, business letters, etc., so your written English says what you mean. As noted above, I can make recordings of you oral presentations so that you can practice them later.

3) EXPLANATION OF AMERICAN CULTURE

My system involves giving you drills and exercises in the full spectrum of vowel and consonant sounds, and working on distinguishing the sounds from one word to another. Depending on your linguistic background, I tailor the sessions to your needs and ability. Issues addressed include, but are not limited to:

-Identifying and understanding the function of diphthongs.
-Proper consonant and vowel sounds.
-Placing the accent on the proper syllable.
-Becoming familiar with the phonetic pronunciation guide in a dictionary.

Usually, I work in ninety-minute sessions, and find that to be a good meeting time for this work.

I generally recommend that students work with me twice a week and practice with a conversation partner every day. Other recommendations include:

-Listen to and imitate newscasters on the TV and radio.

-Listen to a variety of American blues and country music and imitate them. This is a fun part.

-Read out loud to yourself, focusing on diction and pronunciation.

-Keep a vocabulary list of new words and try to integrate them into conversation and the business day.

-In most case, focus on speaking more slowly and in a lower vocal register.

In our lessons, I may have you read from a newspaper or magazine article, while I make notes about your pronunciation mistakes as you go along. Then we break down where the mistakes occur, with regard to accenting the proper syllable, the proper consonant sound, and emphasizing whether the vowel is a long or short sound. I then, ask you to use the word in another context or sentence. Sometimes, I use drills more associated with a singing lesson. These are some of the methods I have used with success since 1982.

I also offer tutoring for writing, grammar and literature, and counseling for admission into college, graduate or professional schools.

I have learned many of the best techniques to grapple with the different problem sets that make up the GRE verbal. I have incorporated these strategies into lesson plans that will help you to widely improve your fluency in terms of how to approach the GRE verbal test. The most important thing in regard to the GRE is, of course, vocabulary, and I can offer strategies as to how to effectively manage this aspect of studying for the test as well. One of the first principles to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to score in the higher percentiles of the GRE without first developing a certain level of vocabulary. I can share with you the same strategies that I used in order to develop and retain a broader vocabulary in preparation for the GRE verbal test.

Please send me an e-mail including your scheduled TEST DATE if possible so that I can begin developing lesson plans that would be appropriate for the amount of time that we have to prepare for the test.

Please also include your city. I am happy to drive to your residence, provided that it is a reasonable distance from North Berkeley. The further the drive, the higher the hourly rate will be. A small amount of biographical information in the e-mail will also be helpful, mainly for the purposes of scheduling our appointments. In order to offer my services, I would ask that a client has the need for a minimum of 5 hrs. of tutoring over the course of
3 weeks.

***A SINGER'S MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WHEN TRYING TO SING HIGHER NOTES***

#1 STRAINING - Many improperly trained singers push their low (chest) voice up too high (which sounds like yelling.) This is very harmful to the vocal cords and can lead to fatigue, hoarseness, vocal nodules, hemorrhaging, etc.

#2 CRACKING/DISCONNECTING INTO "FALSETTO"- Falsetto is a breathy sound which results from the vocal cords not closing properly (like they do when we speak correctly.) Singing in Falsetto results in limited strength/expression and is also damaging to your vocal cords over time. Did you know that whispering creates edema, swelling of the vocal cords?

SLS IS THE SOLUTION: If you sing with closed vocal cords and a low, stable larynx (Adam's apple,) you will be able to sing smoothly from low to high through the breaks in your voice and be able to more easily focus on the art of singing because your voice is consistent, strong and healthy! ***A SINGER'S MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WHEN TRYING TO SING HIGHER NOTES***

1) STRAINING - Many improperly trained singers push their low (chest) voice up too high (which sounds like yelling.) This is very harmful to the vocal cords and can lead to fatigue, hoarseness, vocal nodules, hemorrhaging.

2) CRACKING/DISCONNECTING INTO "FALSETTO"- Falsetto is a breathy sound which results from the vocal cords not closing properly (like they do when we speak correctly.) Singing in Falsetto results in limited strength/expression and is also damaging to your vocal cords over time. Did you know that whispering creates edema, swelling of the vocal cords?

There are many styles of teaching. It is important to give directions in a simple and positive fashion. The instructor should be able to give clear instructions in English. My students have included teenagers, seniors as old as 95 and drivers with phobias.



I have broken down each maneuver into easy to understand steps. A new driver needs to be told more than "look over your shoulder before changing lanes". It is necessary to tell the inexperienced driver which mirror to look into, when to turn the signal indicator on or off, when to speed up or to slow down and of course, when is it safe to change lanes in front of another moving vehicle. For the beginner, I try to make it as easy as painting by the numbers.

Over the years, many students have expressed a preference for my teaching style and technique over those of their previous instructors. A lot of the instructors teaching at a discounted rate have no previous background in driving other than possessing a drivers license. Many will have you driving in a straight line with nothing to be learned. I truly care. I want my students to learn how to drive as quickly as possible. My lessons are 2 hours of intensive training. Lessons are given in a mid-sized Toyota Camry for added safety. I dare say, my reaction to hazards are second to none.



In the Bay Area, you will find instructors who charge anywhere between $25/hr. to as much as $85/hr. I've had students come to me after taking lessons from other instructors with the complaint, "I couldn't understand what he was trying to tell me." Important question to ask yourself. Do you want an instructor who charges $35/hr. to tell you "No, don't do that." or would you prefer a driving instructor to tell you what just happened and how it can be corrected. In addition to pointing out the error, I will offer a solution.
