Summary:
Ensure the effective development and execution of agreed HR strategies, processes and services. Function in a strategic business partner role, providing and facilitating HR solutions and services to support the business strategies and mission initially for the northwest region which has approximately 400 employees in 12 locations, three of which are in Canada.
Duties:
• Develop, recommend, and implement agreed HR strategies and initiatives that support the Northwest and Canadian businesses, including staffing, talent management, succession planning, communication and employee development. This will be done in conjunction with corporate HR resources i.e. recruitment, communications, and training managers.
• Ensure that performance management system is fully implemented and effectively utilized. Assist managers in setting SMART goals and preparing for employee reviews. Conduct training as necessary.
• Develop and implement programs which help managers address people-related issues and provide guidance/interpretation about company/division HR policies and practices. Insure that company personnel practices and policies are uniformly followed.
• Ensure that location personnel actions are in compliance with state and federal regulations. Conduct required compliance training. Provide labor relations support in unionized locations. Participate in grievance meetings and contract negotiations. In union-free locations, make sure that proactive employee relations programs are in place to maintain union-free status.
• Oversee and provide guidance and support to local HR personnel in all areas of personnel administration including benefits, recruiting, and training ensuring administrative tasks are completed within deadlines.
• Manage benefits administration in northwest including Canadian locations in conjunction with centralized administration and provide benefit education to all employees.
• Manage a two person Payroll Department servicing employees in CA and NV.
• Educate and mentor the office coordinators/managers and payroll staff.
Specific Job Skills:
• Experience in developing and implementing HR strategies and initiatives across multiple sites and countries
• Demonstrate knowledge and experience in labor contract administration and employment law
• Knowledge of CA and NV payroll procedures
• Strong hands-on training skills (DDI background preferred)
• Ability to multi-task, and have a sense of urgency and high energy
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Flexible problem-solving approach
• Ability to operate independently
• Knowledge of principles and practices of personnel administration
Education and/or Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 10 years in a exempt-level Human Relations Management Role
• Minimum of seven (7) years experience in a unionized, multi-state organization
• Understanding of Canadian (western provinces) personnel laws and benefits administration issues
• Experience working in a Sarbanes–Oxley (SOX) environment preferred
• Manufacturing, mining, agribusiness or related experience preferred
• Experience working in a de-centralized environment preferred
Supervisory responsibility:
Initially this position will supervise one HR Assistant and a two person Payroll department.
Job Conditions:
Ability to travel 25% of time and ability to work with multi-company policies and procedures (Sims Metal Management, Richmond Steel Recycling, etc.)
