About me: I’m a light smoker (hopefully not forever), about 2 packs a week, but I’m not looking for a household that has smoking indoors, and that includes 420. I can be flexible with the 420, as long as it’s in moderation (moderation is not daily). I drink a fair amount but am not looking to go crazy during the week (though I do go out on weeknights sometimes). My job will require a fairly regular 8-5 schedule, so the household shouldn’t be insanely noisy after 10pm. Weekends are fair game for reasonably late nights and guests, as long as friends are respectful and not the drunken frat-boy type. I will want to have friends come by and possibly stay a night (not 5 or 6 people at a time, but 1-2), so a household that is cool with this would be great.
I love cats. I won’t be bringing any with me, but it would be great to live in a household that has cats, or a small dog. I think animals make a household more complete.
I obviously am a vegan, but it’s not essential that my household be entirely vegan/vegetarian. Of course that would be FANTASTIC, but I’m not holding my breath for it. As long as people are respectful of me, I will return that respect. Also, although I generally eat pretty healthy, it may be apparent that I am not a “health” vegan. Veganism is simply an extension of my personal ethics. Many people have difficulty understanding how smoking cigarettes and drinking is compatible with veganism, but I am of the opinion that it is totally acceptable.
A household with at least 2 currently residing members is ideal. Preferably a total of 4-6 people (including me). I can’t budge on this one, so if you have one room in a two bedroom place, I’m not interested. A cooperative would be awesome. I’m active with the veg community here in Boston and would like to keep that up in my new location.
I won’t be bringing furniture with me, so if you have a roommate trying to get rid of a bed/dresser or general living necessities, I’d be happy to negotiate something.

"How much are you willing to pay?"
I am willing to pay what I can afford, and what I feel the situation is worth to me, that's entirely dependant on what exactly you have to offer. There is no answer to this question, as every situation is different, with a different value. It would be impossible to outlay all of the factors in my decision here(and this ad is already VERY long for a craigslist ad), so I would much prefer that you determine what you would like to get for the situation that you have to offer, and I will let you know if it fits my needs and my budget.
"Do you ever bring work to the house other than your own?"
Generally, I don't make a habit of it, but I need to have the option for certain tasks when the only alternative is to lose the job. I do work on family and friend's cars, however, and need to be able to do so.
"When do you want to move/when can you move in by?"
My timetable is completely open, so aside from wanting to give 30 days notice at my current place before I move, I can move whenever I find the right place. I will not under any circumstances move out of my current situation without first giving 30 days notice, however, so please don't ask me to(yes, I have been asked this before).
One other thing that is worth mentioning, as this has come up as well - I am NOT interested in subletting from someone who is renting a home. I am only interested in renting from someone who actually owns the home and the property that it is on. There are many reasons for this, but I am not in any way flexible on this.
I know that what I am looking for is very uncommon, but I am hopeful that I'll find it. Here's my basic situation:
I'm a car nut that owns a couple of classic cars, and there are even more(2 at present) in my family that I am responsible for maintaining and repairing as needed. I am a mobile auto mechanic by trade, so much of my time is spent working on other's cars or my own or those of my family/friends. My needs for space go well beyond that of needing space to work on my cars, but also to store tools, parts and such.
I have always enjoyed renting from wonderful people who own their own homes, and I have lived where I am now for over 5 1/2 years. I love it, and would stay here indefinitely, were it not for my need for more space than I have available to me here. I can provide great detail about my requirement for space if you are so interested, but in the interest of brevity I will provide a few more details about myself.
I am a completely clean, drug and alcohol free, non-smoking, very easy going and quiet 26 year old male with a passion for cars and photography. It's very rare that I meet someone that I don't get along with, and I'm the complete opposite of a troublemaker. I'm not a partier, nor the kind of person who invites anyone but my closest trusted friends and family over to my house, and even then, you'll hardly know I'm there. Basically, I'm not like most 26 year olds that you meet - I'm very motivated, full of ambition and the desire to make the most of my time and talent, and that's my main goal in looking for the space to expand.
I have a small cat that has been declawed and is flawlessly litterbox trained, and she's the most loving and friendly kitty you'll ever meet. She's a strictly indoor cat, so there is zero chance of her tracking things in from outside or otherwise making a mess. Please take note: My cat is extremely important to me, and it will go wherever I go, so please don't waste either of our time if you don't like cats or aren't receptive to having one in your house, as I will not move somewhere that my cat isn't welcome. My wording may sound a little harsh there, but I have gotten a couple of responses that basically said "get rid of the cat and we can talk", and that simply isn't going to happen. I'm not interested in renting from someone who doesn't understand the bond between a pet and its owner. The cat goes wherever I go, because I love my cat :)
I work for myself, so my schedule is open to adjustment as needed, and one of the nice things about this is that it allows me to get things done around the house and help out as needed. I'm quite the handyman in many ways, and when things need to be fixed or otherwise taken care of around the house, I'm always delighted to help. I've done quite a bit of painting and all manner of handyman stuff where I live now, and I enjoy it. And of course, it goes without saying, all of your automotive maintenance and repair needs will be completely taken care of ;)
I have two bedrooms where I live now, and while that is very nice, it's not strictly necessary, though very much preferred. However, if only one room is available, it would need to be fairly large(minimum of about 15'x20'), as a single small bedroom isn't going to fit my needs. That said, I do very much desire to have my own bathroom(it's not a deal breaker, but it's very important to me).
Here's a basic breakdown of the space that I need, and what would be very helpful:
I need a space off the street where I can leave at least one car for long periods, where I can work on it at length and have some space around it to work. I want this space to be completely out of sight. I have a car in my family now that is in the midst of restoration, and will not be finished for a couple of months yet, and it's this kind of thing that is quite difficult to accomplish where I live now. I need the space to store a car like this where I can work on it as I have time, where it will not be in anyone's way. This is the most important.
I also need space for a storage shed, where I can store parts and such - If I can find something like this inside, that would be absolutely fantastic, but I can keep it in a shed outside, that's no problem.
I would also like a secure place, off the street and out of sight, where I can leave my work vehicle with all of my tools in it. It's a station wagon, not a huge truck or anything, but it would be very nice to be able to leave my tools in it without having to worry about it being out on the street, visible and open for all to see. It would be nice to come home at the end of a long day and feel secure about leaving my tools in it, somewhere safe and out of sight.
I also have a another classic car that is very dear to me, that I would love to be able to park it somewhere other than the street. A garage would be nice, but I'm not expecting that. A side yard, or even a driveway would be better than the street, but it sure would be nice to keep it off the street, where it will be secure and protected(and maybe even protected from the elements!).
I know I'm asking a lot, but I know there are people out there who have a lot of space, and if I can find someone that has some extra space that they aren't using, I'd love to make use of it. I'm a very respectful tenant, and I've rented from the same wonderful couple for over five years now in San Ramon, it's just time for me to expand.
I left the rent field open, as that's very open, based on what I can find and where. The more ideal the situation is for my needs, the more I am willing to pay, obviously, and I do understand that I am asking a lot, and I certainly do not expect it free. I don't expect to get the same deal as I have now, I know that. As far as location, I'm in San Ramon now, and wouldn't mind staying here, but the space that I may need might not be available here - I'm not sure. I wouldn't mind living anywhere in this area, be it San Ramon, Pleasanton, Dublin, Danville, Alamo, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, or in generally the same area, but somewhere along 680 between Walnut Creek and Sunol would be my preference. My GF lives in Walnut Creek, and the auto parts store that I frequent is in San Ramon, so the best balance of those two would be ideal. That said, if I can find a great situation elsewhere, I'm open to check it out, so long as the neighborhood is safe and secure.

Some cons: He is allergic to cats. While he wishes he lived in your mansion, he can only afford up to $750 with utilities. He has this bulky "car" which he has to put somewhere without it getting ticketed. And, as he is an artiste, he needs space in his room for a drawing table and desk.
