Group Counselor
Lincoln Child Center prepares children with severe
emotional disturbances to lead a healthy and normal life by providing
them and their families with education and therapy in a healing
environment. Established in 1881, Lincoln has served thousands of
children. It is renowned for mental health, residential treatment and
education programs.
The center’s services are located on a campus site in the Oakland
Hills and in elementary and middle schools in Oakland and Pittsburg.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Group Counselor provides supervision of the children in his/her care by providing a healthy and therapeutic environment and assisting in the implementation of psychiatric treatment plans for the children. This is a 24 hour facility. INTERVIEWS ARE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH AT 10AM.. The recruiter will review submitted resumes and call to invite applicants to the interview. On-call counselors work on an as needed basis. This is great for someone with the desire to get the experience in this career field or looking for extra money with a flexible schedule! On-call counselors may be asked to work days, nights or weekends. Some On-call counselors work on a regular basis.

An addition to the schedules there is a MANDATORY paid staff training once a month from 11am-2pm. If employment is offered and accepted, there is also a paid MANDATORY training that is 2 weeks, you MUST be available for the training for the full duration, from DECEMBER 7TH-18TH. 9am-5pm. IF YOU CANNOT COMPLETE THIS TRAINING DURING THESE HOURS, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY. After completion of the training you will begin your regular assigned schedule or will be placed on the On-call list.
Salary: Counselor I, $12.48(must have a Associates degree), Counselor II $13.45 (must have a Bachelors degree), Counselor III $14.74 (must have a Bachelors degree plus 4 years experience OR a Masters in this field), On-Call Counselors $12.00,(no degree necessary, some experience with children is highly desired).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Supervise, protect and care for children individually and in groups at all times, assisting each child in working with a group and in handling individual problems
- Administer discipline appropriately and set limits for child’s behavior
- Help establish effective group management and carryout group treatment goals of children in his/her charge
- Alert unit supervisor and\or after-hours supervisor of any major incidents
- Support and actively work to implement the therapeutic plans for each child in the daily living process as prescribed and developed by the clinical treatment plan, provide written notations of the child’s progress, as required, identify the need for professional services and communicate such findings to the professional staff
- Help establish effective group management and carryout group treatment goals of children in his/her charge
- Carry out all medical instructions, provide first aid, and exercise judgment in calling for medical help
- Supervise and carry out recreational activities both on and off grounds
- Be cognizant of children’s food needs, prepare and serve meals in the unit when designated and prepare refreshments
- Share household duties with other child care staff in a fair and equitable manner
- Participate as required in psychiatric staff meetings, unit meetings and other scheduled meetings
- Develop and implement recreational or educational packages including activities, resource materials, field trips or visits designed to achieve specific milieu goals
- Help children and their peer group in the complicated and stressful process of intake and discharge
- Co-lead time-limited therapy groups relating to milieu
- Assist children in the performance of school homework, and help motivate each child
- Be responsible for the clothing needs of the children in the counselor’s charge
- Deal with parents with warmth and sensitivity
- Demonstrate commitment to professional growth and increasing clinical skills by participating in on-the-job training opportunities
- Attend field-based training programs and present material at agency in-service trainings
- Research and liaison with community resources to achieve specific mainstream or transitional goals for clients; provide support for client; be physically present for transition
- Participate in cross-agency special projects under the guidance of program director, i.e. data collection for service analysis, material inventories, task committees
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Attend required meetings as assigned
- Follow Lincoln Child Center policies and procedure
- Participate in Lincoln Child Center in-service training programs
- Understand and follow all Lincoln Child Center safety policies, procedures and rules
- Perform all job duties safely
- Attend all required safety training sessions
- Identify and immediately report all workplace hazards, safety rule violations, near misses, and work-related injuries
- Perform other duties as assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
On-Call Counselors: On-Call Counselors are scheduled on an as-needed basis to replace regular part- and full-time staff or to fill position vacancies. Experience working with children is strongly preferred.
Counselor I: AA degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral science subject. One (1) year of mental health experience with experience in a recognized childcare facility with SED children preferred. Currently full-time and part-time positions are only available to be filled by applicants with at least a Associates degree.
Counselor II: BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral science subject. One (1) year of mental health experience with experience in a recognized childcare facility with SED children preferred.
Counselor III: MA/MS degree in a Behavioral Science (child development, psychology, counseling and guidance, early childhood education, human services, nursing, social science, social welfare, social work, sociology) or a BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university, preferably with a major in a behavioral science and four (4) years mental health experience. Experience in a recognized childcare facility with SED children preferred.
- Demonstrated awareness of, sensitivity to and competence in dealing with the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of client population
- The ability to relate effectively and professionally with children, supervisor, co- workers and staff
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Must clear a Livescan fingerprinting/background check and TB test. Valid California driver’s license, a clear driving record and personal vehicle insurance coverage.
- Availability of a personal vehicle in good working condition to be used on Lincoln Child Center business
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The willingness and the ability to be first aid and CPR trained
- The willingness and the ability to be PRO-Act trained
- Physical fitness with the ability to bend, stoop, kneel, drop to one knee and get back up and safely contain a child in a restraint
- Must be able to physically manage acting out behavior of children ages 6-15 years
