Often, when we think of relationships we think in terms of our relationships to, or with others. But what about our relationships to ourselves? Are we in rapport with ourselves? What does that mean? Are we authentic, genuine, careful, compassionate even with those dark hidden parts within us?

It's amazing the kinds of positive results you can begin to experience in relationships with others, even those you have had difficulty in relationship with, when you have taken time to reflect and resolve something that has more to do with your relationship with yourself. It's the dilemma of the elusive obvious and feels counter intuitive. In this society, we are bombarded with messages of self consideration in terms of "getting ahead" in life; a "one-up" kind of stance in relationship to others. At the same time there is the extreme opposite message of "Do unto others as you would have them to unto you" the good ole Golden Rule that has a "one-down" connotation. It seems most of us have difficulty striking and maintaining a balance between these two extremes.

Transforming Father Wounds Group Starting Next Week (oakland lake merritt / grand)

Next week I�m starting a weekly group for men recovering from deep wounding from their father or stepfather. I'm also organizing a separate group for men and women.

The group starting next week will help each man find a better relationship with his father or stepfather. For a man whose father has passed, he will shift his relationship with his memories of wounds from his father.

We�ll do some skill-building involving boundaries, triggering, coping, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills. We�ll also do some organic transformational work together with core beliefs involving shame, strength, trust and loss of self-esteem. That means making changes at your core and working with the potential of your power to choose.

Space is limited. The group will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. Cost is $30 per session. I will need to interview the prospective group members to assess the level of complexity of their abuse history.

This evening event at Back In Action will offer the chance to explore our inherent vitality as human beings as well as the experience of being humans in community with one another. Using mindfulness and other experiential activities (play!), Alissa will introduce activities that enhance vitality, spark creativity, and foster an exploration of relationship with self and community.

In life, we may experience a reduction of vitality for many reasons, including difficulties with our communities (families, friends, etc), current life stressors (isolation, illness, pain, overwork, financial difficulties, loss), and many other causes. Creativity in all its forms and positive connectedness with others can be a wonderful resource for opening us to ourselves and our essential vitality.

AUTISM Want to start a teen group! (richmond / point / annex)

I want to connect with others who have teens with high functioning Autism ( HFA) for get togethers - movies and other social events. My son is 15. He goes to JSHS and is an average student! There are groups for lower and for higher functioning students but he falls in the middle and could sure use some socialization with peers on the same level!!!!!I encourage girls and boys to be involved~! It doesn't have to be autism of course just young people like him who have no social outlet and are aware of it !!!

*****ADDED 11-10-09 I have been to several PARENT support groups in past years through the school district, none of which are still meeting. IMO the younger kid's parents are more inclined to participate in a parent group.
Anyway, I want to find a specific group, Young people who are higher functioning : Mild Autism, Mild Developmental Delay and Asperger's , those who can do things together that they may all like. movies, meals, parks, swimming dates and who knows!!! also a "rant" group where, with a facilitator such as a respite mentor or perhaps a parent once in a while, with whom they can have their own support group and talk freely about issues they all have in common - teen issues. Bullying, girls/boys dating, college, jobs the future, other common interests and so on. A place where they can be themselves and be independent, say what they want, how they feel and so on, with no judgement or fear of rejection - only acceptance and confidentiality. Maybe this group could be sometimes integrated by siblings?
So this is my idea... to get similarly abled youth together and see if they like the interactions together. As for my son , having true friends, friends who understand, is next to impossible. What if they could talk to one another about how it is to have social problems, be bullied and so on., with someone who is living the same situation !!! Who really gets it.
We parents could keep in touch and meet at times but mostly take turns hosting events for out kids - boys and girls... We could chaperone at dances, take them out to dinner and sit on the other side of the room all kinds of things. Our children are becoming adults and have to deal with the real world and this would be a catalyst for them to branch out.

For those who live with BDD or any body image-related issues, we have a group for you. Our next meeting is this Sunday, November 15 from 6 pm - 7:30 pm. The BIS group meets in Pleasanton at the Valley Care Health System - Pleasanton campus (address and info below). Myself and Lon are very excited about this group and look forward to it developing into something special. As those who may live with BDD or other body image-related issues know, it is very difficult to find a support group out there. We're here for you.

If you are wondering if you should come to our meetings, here are a few questions that may answer that.
1. Do you spend too much time worrying about what you look like?
2. Do you worry about what others think of your physical appearance?
3. Are you negatively preoccupied or obsessed with a perceived or minimal physical flaw or an imagined defect in your appearance?
2. Do you spend too much time looking in mirrors, or do you avoid them entirely because you don't like the way you look?
3. Do you often compare yourself to others and think they always look better than you?
4. Does your body image problem contribute to depression, social anxiety or other obsessive compulsions?

If you have answered yes to any or all of the above questions, please consider attending the BIS (Body Image Support) group this Sunday, November 15 in Pleasanton. We generally meet the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month; however, we're only meeting on the 3rd Sunday in November.

The BIS group is for those living with body image issues/preoccupations/obsessions that interfere with your daily life. Women Veterans:

Have you served in any branch of the military, including Reserves, Guard, Inactive Reserve, or Women's Military Auxilary (pre-1970's)? I am organizing a Veterans Group devoted to the advancement of the social, political, & professional status of Women Veterans and Women in Military Service.

Women have come a long way, but there is work left to do, and Women Veterans still experience disparities in comparison to their male counterparts. I served two decades in Military Service. I was dedicated to my military career and excelled in many areas, but my military tenure was not always an easy path to forge. I want to bring Women Veterans together who are serious about addressing the diverse issues still facting many women serving in the military.

My insights into Women in Military Service drove me to spearhead the first ever "Salute to Women Veterans" in March 2009, for Women's History Month in Santa Clara County. The event was a touching tribute to the contributions of Women who have served their country in Peacetime and War, and was successful behind expectations. This event drove home the point that Women Veterans and Women in Military Service need champions within their own ranks to herald their causes.

The current economy is not easy on any of us, and I have noticed way too many people holding off their very, very basic dental care.

Redwood Regional Park -Trail Run

Redwood Regional Park is located in the hills east of Oakland. The park contains the largest remaining natural stand of coast redwood found in the East Bay. Redwood forests are more commonly found closer to the coast where the air is cool and humid year-round. In the Bay Area, such forests are found in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Marin Hills. The unique geographical circumstances of the redwood forest in Redwood Regional Park create coastal conditions. Winds funneled through the Golden Gate flow directly across the Bay and are channeled into the linear valley in which the Montclair District of Oakland is situated. This valley is also well-watered all year round and is protected from extremes of temperature and high winds.

Up to the middle of the 19th century, the bulk of the redwood forest lay in the linear valley, with extensions to the surrounding ridges. Early mariners used two particularly tall redwood trees along the ridges to help them navigate into San Francisco Bay. However, logging in the latter half of the 1800s wiped out the original trees, leaving only their stumps. The redwoods contained in today's regional park are the second-growth trees which sprouted from many of these stumps, which are registered as a California Historical Landmark (#962).

have an idea. Many people are struggling. I mean, not kinda struggling but really struggling. Now this looks different for each person. Some people have money and no resources. Some have resources but no money. Some can do but may have a little limitation some maybe cannot do but have much to give. What if a group of women came together, honestly, openly and pooled all of their resources such that individual needs could be met cooperatively. Not forever but until such time each person met a said goal. Then what if, we moved on into back into our individual lives we kept the community going. New people come in, help each other and the graduates also help--a way of giving back. I am a very smart, capable, resourceful caring woman. I have a lot of spunk but right now times are really hard. I believe there is power in numbers. I be live we could effectively help each other really do well. I know that we live in a world that is judging and distrusting. I know there is shame in "not being able to do" etc but I think this thinking is what keeps us all divided in our little cells, separate and feeling that way. I am proposing that if you are down and out, down to your last, don't know how the hell it happed to you but some how it did. Have known better days, wanna know better days, willing to work hard, willing to share, willing to trust and willing to be kind, then send me a very private email letting me know I am in. If you are judging or the kind of person that thinks you have it all figured out and only care to write me your commentary, I will tell you now, save your time. I am happy you are well but really I am focusing on becoming and bringing a few sisters along with me so I would not want to hear any negative commentary. I am serious, you only respond if you are serious. This takes trust so leave the skeptics behind. let's build together. singles, couples all are welcome The caveat: I am really looking for certain kinds of folk. The JFK Center for Holistic Counseling has a few openings in the Expressive Arts Therapy Group. The expressive arts process utilizes art, movement, music, guided imagery, clay, collage, and mindfulness meditation. By fusing group therapy with expressive arts in this particular group we intend to bring awareness and attention to one's own innate wisdom; one's process in relating to others; and the opportunity to choose more creative ways of relating, understanding, and being.

We meet Thursday evenings 7pm-9pm. At this point it is an all women's group but all genders are welcome to apply. Those looking to do meaningful self-work within the context of a group therapy setting welcome. This is not a support group, but an opportunity to explore more deeply what keeps one from more satisfying relationships wtih oneself and others, in a supportive environment. Topics may include but are not limited to: life transitions, authenticity, self expression, connection/isolation, and creativity.

The group is led by two MFT Therapy Trainees supervised by a licensed clinician. Enrollment is open and ongoing. An initial 10-week commitment is required. $150/ 10 weeks (That's only $15/session). A desire for those looking to do long-term work (past the ten week commitment) are preferred.

---There are presently two opening in the Wednesday evening (7-9 PM) therapy- support group for gay men over 40 years of age.

---This is a very stable long-term confidential group (presently made of six members) meeting weekly in Oakland with a month-to-month commitment. Within a matter of a few weeks deep feelings of trust, understanding and caring develop if the new member has been carefully selected.

---Some of the issues we work on include finding intimacy, maintaining a long-term primary relationship, aging, friendships, improving self image, communication and social skills, dealing with depression and isolation, building a support network and developing a sense of belonging to the outside community.

---This is an interactional group where each member can be himself without fears of group pressure or advice giving. We talk to each other in a safe and supportive environment to reach deeper levels of honesty and meaningful contact so that each member feels involved, respected and understood. It is really not a coming-out group because each person is fairly settled on his sexual orientation as a gay man.
