Free Knitting Class (berkeley)

Free beginning knitting class at Nabolom Bakery located at 2708 Russell St. in Berkeley.

This is a class geared for beginners, but we will also discuss starting a regular knitting group. You will learn how to knit, purl, cast on, and cast off, and will make yourself a "gauge swatch".

We have a limited supply of knitting needles to use during the class, but bring your own if you can. Same with yarn. Don't have any money? Chop sticks work just as well. And you can get creative with the yarn--ribbon, fabric scraps sewn together, or thin wire could all be used.

Hope to see you there!

You know you’re living in the moment when: 1) You feel joy 2) Time disappears 3) Your intuition is strong 4) You’re centered in your body, not stuck in your head. If you haven’t experienced that in a while, this fun, interactive workshop is for you. I’ll teach techniques that land you in the sweet spot of the Now. Your own intuition, physicality, child-like curiosity and sense of play will guide you there. Stop living the past, a quality of depression, or wishing for the future, a quality of anxiety. Only in the present moment can happiness, power and peace be known, and your essential nature realized.

APPLAUSE is a unique group of talented young musicians who not only play their instruments, but also sing and dance at the same time. Currently Applause is comprised of four violins, one viola, one cello, one string bass, one trombone, one saxophone, one flute, and a smattering of percussion, yet there are only seven musicians! Our Applausicians currently range in age from 12 to 16-years old (not counting the directors!). They sing, dance, wear costumes, and utilize a variety of props, all while playing their instruments. The children develop most of the costumes, props, and choreography, because the directors just can't stop their abundant creativity. Each of the students takes private music lessons, and two of their teachers, Kerry Borgen and Gretchen Egen, wanted to give the kids a fun and creative way to share their music. Thus, in the Fall of 2004 the group Applause was formed. They rehearse once a week for a few hours. The group is available for private parties. Come see what the Applause is all about! You can check out our website at www.applausekids.net. There you can also fill out a student application.

Frugal Physicians-Learn to save your medical practice money (FREE)

IN-OFFICE TRAINING TO SAVE YOUR MEDICAL PRACTICE MONEY

FREE

We are two women who have worked locally in the medical field for years.

Over time we've become increasingly concerned about the amount of money that every other business makes off physicians' practices, and how little is left for the physicians themselves.

We have made it our goal to find ways that save medical practices substantial amounts of money.

FOR EXAMPLE: SEASONAL FLU VACCINE:

-Normally, $130 a vial (for 10 – 11) doses – and NON-returnable.

-We get it for our physician at $84 a vial (for 10 - 11 doses) – and it’s FULLY RETURNABLE

And SYRINGES:

-Usually about $1 each.

-We get them for our physicians for $4 for 100 syringes -- that's not a typo: It's $4 for ONE-HUNDRED syringes.

PLUS:
-We save our docs 50 percent on medical supplies
-We know how to bill for much healthier reimbursements
-We know how to maximize income on tests
-AND MANY MORE

With all of the trouble medical practices are having, we know other doctors can use this information.

We come to your office. The training lasts about one-half hour.

Right now we have openings to do trainings November 13, November 20, and December 4. Time slots fill fast. Soon we'll be booking for January.

-Cost: No cost now. None. The training is free. We'll check back with you in a month and if these tips do save you money, we will send you a bill for $200. It’s nothing right now and if anything it will be billed later.

-Catch: Your staff has to use the methods we've learned over time working in three Walnut Creek physicians' offices.

-Above board? It's all perfectly legal, board certified, practicing physicians have been using them successfully for some time.

We haven’t yet had a single practice report that these did NOT save them substantial money. For the most part, everyone -- from office managers to physicians -- think we're miracle workers. And if you don't, we won't even bill you if you're not saving money after one month.

Call DeAnne if you have any questions -- I'll speak to you in person. (925) 680-2587

Or send us an email: frugalphysicians@aol.com

Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to more than 1500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities.
Recently, our employment and training department partnered with local community colleges to develop an entry level Solar Panel Installation Training Program. In addition, we are working with local "green" employers to place our Veterans, after they complete the training, into a position where they can use their skills in the green workforce.
DELTA BLUES Slide Guitar & Acoustic Blues Lessons, Modern/Classic (All Levels/East Bay & SF)

I am a seasoned acoustic blues player and experienced guitar teacher, currently taking on more private students.

About Lessons
Learn to play classic tunes by the likes of Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Tampa Red, and Son House, and/or the modern riffs of players like Ben Harper, Kelly Joe Phelps, Keb Mo, the Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt. We can work on songs by your favorite artist from square one, or work from my backlog of teaching materials/tunes/riffs...

Since this is the Blues we're talking about, my lessons are entirely riff and feel based. No knowledge of theory required.

About Slide Guitar
Teaching yourself to play slide is a little like teaching yourself to be an ultimate fighter or skier... It gets a lot less painful, if you have somebody to show you a few basic things. Playing "simple" slide licks and chords, with out all the nasty sounds coming out of the instrument can be very difficult, even for very experienced, advanced guitarists. It's really a new brand new skill-set we're building, and a lot of the technique has no correlate in fretted playing. I will teach you the fundamentals you need ti get you through beginning slide stage. Unfortunately, "wood-shedding," on its own, often isn't good enough, when trying to learn slide. You can save a ton of time, with just a couple lessons.

From there, we can get as deep into the technique as desired, or you can try to go it on your own. You'll have all the building blocks to learn your favorite slide tunes and come up with your own licks. If you are an experienced guitarist, slide is a great thing to work in to your "bag of tricks." You might reconnect with the instrument with a freshness that you haven't experienced, since you first "got good" at playing. (when we all played for 5-hours at a time, just because we could, and it was fun!) Slide guitar is really fun, once you get the hang of it, people love the sound of it, and very simple phrases can sound very cool. A little slide knowledge might be just the thing that steps your game up to the level you want to be at.

About Fingerstyle Blues
Fingerstyle Blues (John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins, Skip James, John Fahey etc) is similar, in that many self-taught players develop a lot of "bad habits," especially, in my experience, inefficient use of their picking hand. Either way, we'll get you started on a linear plan to build your skill set. If your current technique is working for you, we'll just work on your chops. However, if your picking or fretting technique is getting in the way of your advancement as a guitarist, we might need to rethink the whole thing, from the ground up. I don't mess with an experienced player's technique, unless it is decidedly, certainly getting in the way of them playing to their fullest capabilities. Again, this is the blues, not metal or jazz, so "bad" technique can work-out, in the long-run. We'll just take it from wherever you're at today.

Total beginners and old pros fine... I have experience teaching both and everything in between. Let's play the blues!

About Me
I started playing slide and acoustic blues, when I was just a kid, in my native Florida. I'm a full-time teacher and working/touring musician. I typically have between 20-40 active students at a given time, and I have been teaching for over 10 years. I've taught private lessons, group classes, and workshops at several Bay Area music scools, including Blue Bear School of American Music (SF), Gryphon Instruments (Belmont/Palo-Alto), Alameda School of Music, Daly City School of Music, and MADD Music Studio (Mountain View). I mostly teach from my home-studio, these days, but house calls are negotiable. I offer senior and student discounts as well as great deals on pre-paid packages of lessons.

Please call or write for details and/or to schedule a lesson... Email may ensure the most prompt and thorough response. Thanks for your time!

s practically always a project worth investing in (assuming that a person doesn't live in a 'perfect home,' something few if any home owners actually can claim). Nonetheless, the urge to delve into such projects can sometimes be proportionally unbalanced with a home owner's capacity to actually see things through without any (or at least major) mistakes; therefore, it's important that people know at least a few of the secrets to a perfect home renovation project, a topic which we intend to explore in this article.

First and foremost, a home owner will have to determine their level of personal involvement with the project at hand: it's a crucial topic that will entirely determine which of several paths to follow in carrying out the project. For home owners that for one reason or another have a sufficient amount of time on their hands to be able to tackle the project more or less on their own, there are plenty of resources out there to help them along the way; for those home owners that are too busy to personally take on the project, it's important to know which kinds of professionals (and how many) to recur to.

Learn the Japanese Language and Japanese Cooking (concord / pleasant hill / martinez)

Greetings Everyone,

I am offering classes in Pleasant Hill for both the language and cooking style of Japan. I am a native of Japan and received my M.A. in linguistics at San Francisco State University. I have taught Japanese at UC Berkeley, Cal State East Bay, and other smaller colleges. This would be extremely useful for business purposes, if you are planning to travel there, or just want to learn a new language. Please read below for further details and hopefully we can meet soon. My availability is opening up in about 2 weeks, when I will be available in the evenings with the exception of Wednesday and Thursday. Saturday evening will be fine and all day Sunday as well.

Language Tutoring:

It is possible to hold up to 6 people for group tutoring. This is a good way to practice real life situations with other people, and I would like to see what type of interest this generates. Private one-on-one tutoring is also available. Please respond with your experience level, best available times, and whether you prefer group or private sessions.

Private: $30/hour
2-4 People: $20/hour
5-6 People: $15/hour

Japanese Cooking:

The cuisine of my home country is not only delicious but fun to create also. Due to the size of my kitchen, cooking lessons will be limited to 2 people at a time. For a 4 week program that meets once per week, the cost will be $100-$125 which includes the price of ingredients. It depends on how specific you want the food to be and how available the components are. My recommended dishes would be temaki (conical hand rolls), sushi, okonomiyaki (grilled savory pancake), tempura, miso soup, tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), and some smaller dishes also.

Email me with all your questions and availability so we can work something out. I look forward to meeting you! Arigatoo Gozaimasu!

Existential Expedition: Spirituality, Death and Dying! + CEU's (berkeley)

You and your guests/colleagues are cordially invited...
The Existential Expedition

Ideal topic and tools to support and empower everyone!

Besides finding a worm in your salad, the quickest way to stop any conversation is to ask people about their beliefs regarding death and spirituality. Many people face these issues every day but often feel uncomfortable and stressed by it.

Imagine finding yourself in a room with Debra Jarvis, where people feel encouraged to share about how their lives have brought them to this moment and everyone is describing their choice to live a more fully engaged life, including examining their beliefs and decisions about spirituality, opening to the divinity within, and allowing death and dying to live and breathe openly in their awareness and feelings.

Exploring questions about our own underlying beliefs and assumptions around spirituality, death and dying will help us clarify our own beliefs and empower us to be more comfortable talking with patients, clients, friends and family members about these issues.

This evocative, interactive workshop will provide a safe forum for discussion and exploration of:

• life’s meaning
• spirituality
• death and grief
• integration of beliefs

Using a combination of brief lectures, small group sharing, poetry and journaling, music and guided imagery, and gentle movement, we will discuss in a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, discovery and collaboration.

Debra and Lloyd will create a space where it is safe to unwind, explore and discover new aspects about ourselves and each other – and journey deeply into our hearts and feelings. Aspects of childhood beliefs, patterned behavior, and cultural norms will provide a few of the guideposts for our sharing.

Participants can expect to: gain new perspectives, increase their comfort level when discussing these issues, and gain a deeper understanding of their beliefs.

This workshop is designed for all audiences and levels:
medical/healing arts * clergy * hospice/respite * counselors *
social workers * emergency/rescue/fire/law enforcement personnel *
anyone dealing with grief, loss, death and/or spirituality * and everyone who desires to explore these essential, practical issues more deeply.

<< IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT >>
CEU’s available: RNs * Marriage/Family Therapists (MFT) * Licensed Social Workers (LCW)
(NOTE: partial scholarships and payment options also available ... call Lloyd to discuss!)

Body Empathy: body mindfulness and writing for queer survivors (oakland hills / mills)

Body Empathy:
A day of body mindfulness, gentle movement and writing
for queer, genderqueer and trans survivors of sexual trauma

facilitated by Alex Cafarelli and Jen Cross
10am-4pm, Nov 21, 2009
At The Space, 4148 Mac Arthur Blvd., Oakland
(The Space is wheelchair accessible)

To register, please contact Jen at jennifer@writingourselveswhole.org

Fee: $50-100, sliding scale
(Please check in with us if funds are an issue -- payment plans are always possible, and we may be able to work out trades or other arrangements as well!)

What if we could truly experience empathy for our bodies as they are – and then, by extension, for ourselves, as we are?

As queer, genderqueer & trans survivors with a wide array of backgrounds and identities in a sexuality-/gender-restrictive culture, our self-protective tendency can be to “check out” by detaching mind from body to such great degrees that it can be dangerous.

Physical activity and writing are two ways to check back in with your embodied self: With deep respect for the privacy and variety in our personal experience of gender expression and our individual histories, this workshop will create safe space for participants to embrace our bodies as they are, and to write the stories our bodies have been wishing to speak, while allowing possibility for the integration of identity and physical presence.

Using brief writing exercises and low impact body mindfulness exercises derived from improvisational theater, Zen meditation practice, and the internal Chinese martial arts, participants will have the opportunity to fully embody our gender complexity in a healing and playful environment.

The exercises we practice can be easily incorporated into our daily lives and can enhance our ability to reflect mindfully on our experiences, while interacting with others from a place of self-acceptance, internal power, and confidence, as we continue to move through the world as the fabulously feisty queer & gender warriors that we are….

Your facilitators:

Alex Cafarelli is a Jewish genderqueer femme trauma survivor with a background in 17 years of martial arts training. Her current focal points are Hsing Yi and Bagua, which are both internal Chinese martial arts. Alex’s teaching also incorporates improvisational theater, voice/song work, Northern European/Celtic based elemental Magick, and body mindfulness practices influenced by Vietnamese Zen and Vipassana traditions by way of Manzanita Village. Currently teaching body mindfulness classes in Oakland, Alex also works as a gardener specializing in drought-tolerant and edible landscapes, does Reiki/massage bodywork, and develops and leads element-based rituals to support women, queers, transfolk, and genderqueers in moving through transitions and healing from trauma. As a performer, Alex’s solo and collaborative work encompasses crafty queer wordsmithing, drag, sexual healing, martial arts based movement, song, and ritual performance art. You can contact Alex at petals_and_thorns@yahoo.com

Jen Cross is an extensively-anthologized writer who has facilitated survivors and sexuality writing workshops since 2002. She’s led or co-led writing workshops with activists, adult students, survivors, folks living with a cancer diagnosis, and many other folks. She currently offers two regular weekly workshops (Write Whole: Survivors Write and Declaring Our Erotic) in downtown San Francisco. Jen's a queer incest survivor who used erotic writing to transform her sense of her erotic self. She spent several years working with survivors of domestic violence and other traumas, individually and in groups, before beginning to host writing workshops through which trauma survivors and others could initiate deep and abiding change for ourselves and our communities. She’s a certified Amherst Writers and Artists workshop facilitator. You can find out more about Jen at www.writingourselveswhole.org or write her at jennifer@writingourselveswhole.org
And because a Health Savings Account is tied to an insurance policy, more expensive treatments are covered, usually 100%, after you've met your deductible. When you turn 65, any savings remaining in the account can be withdrawn tax-free to be used for medical expenses you incur in your senior years. In addition, the savings you accumulate in a HSA work like a retirement fund. The money grows tax-deferred like an IRA, and you can withdraw the money after age 65 to pay for non-medical expenses without penalty, although you will be required to pay taxes. It is important to note, however, that amounts withdrawn prior to age 65 are subject to penalties and taxes.

Giving the individual more consumer power when making healthcare decisions not only helps you and your family save money, but also creates an environment in which healthcare costs in general become more reasonably priced. Essentially, the price of healthcare is so high because free market forces have little sway in the realm of healthcare products and services. Insurance coverage causes a disconnection between the consumer and the item purchased. When you visit the doctor or purchase a prescription from the pharmacist, you don't know the real price tag. All you see is your insurance payment and the price you pay at the cash register, after your insurance company pays the balance.

This lack of price transparency has led to less competition within the marketplace. P

The Esmonde Technique (also known as Essentrics and Classical Stretch as seen on PBS) is a fitness method that combines eccentric stretching and strengthening, physiotherapy techniques, ballet, tai chi and many more forms of fitness to help individuals achieve the goal of a toned flexible and balanced body. This unique approach consists of a balanced fitness program that has helped people achieve overall body flexibility, healing, health and anti-aging, with a side-bonus of creating long lean muscles. In a nutshell the Essentrics™ workout is based on eccentric strengthening which stretches the muscles then strengthens them in the elongated position creating a lean toned body. Using movements based on ballet, tai qui, yoga and pilates, Essentrics™ is intended to make the waist thinner, the stomach flatter, the legs leaner and the butt toned, leaving the entire body more flexible and agile. Vanessa is currently the only teacher certified to teach Essentrics on the west coast.

Tai Chi Chuan is known for its many health benefits for both body
and mind and promotes an overall sense of well-being, vitality
and inner calm.

Classes are ongoing and taught in an open, friendly and supportive
atmosphere with special attention given to learning the underlying
principles of Tai Chi Chuan through a systematic approach to stance,
posture and forms training while also giving insights into martial
arts applications.

The integration of Tai Chi forms and Chi Kung (Qigong) exercises
into the class schedule helps students appreciate and experience
the meditative aspects of Tai Chi Chuan very early in their
practice.

The curriculum starts with learning the basic Tai Chi moves and
gradually progresses to more advanced hand and weapon forms. Each
student is encouraged to learn at his or her own comfortable pace,
fitness level or ability to further the benefits and enjoyment of
this powerful and beautiful centuries-old martial art.

Fundamentals of Yoga with Greg Riley

The intention of this Saturday morning class is to build the strong foundation of a lifelong yoga practice based upon the sequential principles of raising consciousness found in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. At the physical level, emphasis will be on awakening joint mobility and function through strong and flowing movements. At the energetic level, the work will be to access the vitality of the breath and mobilize the energetic channels. Healthy physical function and energetic capacity will then be utilized to establish the deeper practices of pranayama, concentration, and meditation.

All this esoteric stuff will be taught in the spirit of the heart, with joy for living always the overriding theme. With compassion, “progress, not perfection”, will be our guiding principle. The movements in this class will be vigorous and challenging, however all movements will be demonstrated in mild, medium, and intense variations so all students can progress at their own intelligent pace. Thus, all levels of students are welcome.

Classes are on-going. Join at any time.
Suitable for Beginners through Intermediate students.

I am a pro DJ. I do not hire in a rank beginner to sustitute. You hire me and you get me. I can work a crowd from 25 to 25,000... but you have to bring me the people who want to have fun! I have Karaoke as well. I can cater to ages from 8 to eighty. I can play Dance music to people older than that too... just, most that age no longer dance or can hear it. (I have an eleven year old daughter and have been a DJ most of the 53 years of my very young life so i have a broad spectrum to choose from.) If I don't have it... nobody needs to hear it! I never show up and play a pre-set playlist. I work on the fly from a 17,000 song library. I play to the audience and the customer. I can provide you with satisfied refferals. I am not cheap. I am easy though... and I am worth it! I prefer to play from my Vintage 1958 Austin Healey Race Car which takes 5 foot by 11 foot of area but I can play in a closet if I have to! Prices are dictated by the event. All I can say is I am the first to the party and the last to leave- AND, If I can't find a party... I'll start one!

If like many parents you decry the canceling of manual arts classes in the schools, we sympathize. We believe that teaching kids how to use their hands, how to see what they are working on, teaches them more than which end of a hammer to hold. It teaches industriousness, creativity, eye-hand coordination, and problem solving,

Our small class specializes in teaching kids how to use the knife. We teach knife cutting, knife whittling, knife sharpening, knife safety, and simple wood carving.

At the end of the class your kids will not view a knife as a dangerous weapon to be afraid of, but a very useful (some say the most useful) single tool.

The teaching philosophy that most closely approximates ours is Educational Sloyd. For a brief introduction search those terms in Wikipedia.

Social Media is a valuable tool for all businesses, small and large! It can help shape your brand, allow you to speak directly to your consumer base and provide a valuable connection to your community!

The time is now for your business to recognize that a lack of understanding of how to work within this increasingly influential channel can no longer serve as an excuse not to.
This is especially true in this economy, when it is more critical than ever to reach consumers where they live, which is -- and there is no doubt about it -- in the blogosphere.
Social Media is inexpensive and has been found to create a meaningful impact. This impact is an enduring one that can be measured in a variety of metrics, all of which point to a dramatically increased ROI.

The Cost is low and the Benefits are high, are you ready for Social Media?

JKM Marketing Solutions is sponsoring an intimate setting, presentation followed by an open Q&A in Walnut Creek, CA on Tuesday, December 1, 2009.

Speaker: Justin Noland, MBA, CEO and Founder of JKM Marketing Solutions
Following the success of building "new media" concepts for international brands like Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream and Red Bull Energy Drink, Justin Noland jumped into the world he was helping to create by starting JKM Marketing Solutions. JKM Marketing Solutions is the name behind the social media strategies for a vast number of Bay Area local businesses, restaurants, and retail stores. JKM has developed brand strategies for national and international consumer goods brands. JKM leads the way in building workable social media communities for a wide array of businesses. The planning and concepts behind their work is based on one single principle: "Your consumer does not want to be sold. They want to entertained, engaged, rewarded and, seriously, they want to like you. That last part warrants repeating; they want to like you. Once people like you, patronizing your business becomes an act of self-expression."

Get an opportunity to listen to a local Social Media visionary explain how your business could benefit from Social Media Marketing platforms. Learn what, why and how with an opportunity to ask questions and get real, business focused answers. Forget the hype and learn what Social Media can actually do for you and your business!

It is our intention to support you in building your foundation for strong and vibrant relationships. We are excited to see where this will lead you and to discover how this will be a catalyst to go deeper in the future.

Teleseries Details
December 2, 9, 16
*You must be able to attend all three to participate.

Delve into the three levels of relationship: your intimate relationship with yourself, others (partner, family and friends) and the global community. Learn how each relationship is generative; the building blocks that depend on the strength of each level to thrive.

1.	Week one: Begin to journey into your relationship to yourself. How do you nourish yourself emotionally, physically, and spiritually?
2.	Week two: Begin to discover your Relationship to others (partners, family, friends). How do you relate to others in your life? How do you expand and sustain your relationships and their growth?
3.	Week three: Begin to explore your relationship to your larger community and the world around you. How do you engage? How will a deeper connection here affect life in a positive and meaningful way?

This FREE 3-week course is being held on the phone via conference call. (This will be a US number and regular long distance charges may apply.) To register, email shekinah@namastecoaching.net and include in the subject line, "Yes, I want to register for relationship dynamics." Notification of attendance and instructions will be emailed back to you. *This series is open to the first 30 people to send an emailed request to register. Once it fills, a wait list will be created.

Gift and Sharing
Offering this course for free is our way of being part of the gift economy, of "paying-it-forward." We hope that you will enjoy our gift. Consider the value you receive at the conclusion of the course and pay it forward in some way. That's one way we impact our larger community!
