Summary: Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in landscaping maintenance activities. Activities include maintaining the entire 26 acres of grounds maintenance including trees, shrubs, groundcover, vines, herbaceous plants, turf, ponds, fountains and the irrigation system by performing the following duties:
Responsibilities:
1. Works along with and provides professional supervision of the gardeners in the care and culture of all plant material and turf which includes watering, fertilizing, weeding, mulching, pruning and regular inspection for disease and insects and their treatment and control.
2. Organizes the gardening work schedule.
3. Coordinates and directs the duties of the gardeners, including all gardening work and related tasks such as pick up and delivery of supplies, cataloging of plants, maintaining and repairing equipment, pathways, fountains and ponds.
4. Maintains accurate records of all supplies and equipment.
5. Provides the Board of Directors, General Manager and the gardeners with respect to implementation of the Landscape Master Plan. Creates new landscape procedures as necessary.
6. Provides expertise and guidance to the gardeners in maintaining and extending the irrigation system.
7. Inspects property on a regular basis to ensure high quality appearance at all times. Keeps written records of inspections.
8. Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirement for completion of job assignment.
9. Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations. Oversees the Watergate Injury and Illness Prevention Program for all departments.
10. Interprets specifications and work orders to workers and assigns duties.
11. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
12. Recommends measures to improve operational methods, equipment performance and quality of staff performance.
13. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department or work crew.
14. Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
15. Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
16. Maintains time and production records.
17. Estimates, requisitions and inspects equipment, materials and supplies. Continually maintains accurate and updated inventory of all equipment and supplies.
18. Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
19. Performs activities of workers supervised.
20. Recommends and manages expenditures with regard to the annual budget. Maintains strict fiscal and inventory controls.
21. Assists General Manager in obtaining and evaluating bids from outside contractors and maintenance service companies. Coordinates work with contractors as directed.
22. Maintains accurate records of work history, work orders, equipment maintenance logs and other records to ensure efficient operations and eliminate loss and duplication.
23. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
24. Responds to emergency calls as necessary and carries an emergency cell phone at all times.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 6 employees in the grounds
department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s
policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training
employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and
disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and Experience Requirements: A fifth year college or university program certificate; or four to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Thorough knowledge of plant materials and their care and culture and the proper aesthetic pruning techniques used on these materials. Knowledge of the soils and microclimates required by these plants due to the complexity of the area. Computer experience is desirable.
Language Skills Requirements: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the Board of Directors and managers. Ability to communicate effectively with staff being supervised.
Mathematical Skills Requirements: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measurement; using whole numbers, common fractions. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry; decimals.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction in written or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
