In a sinking economy, become a part of a growing community that plays free games around the East Bay. Inspired by the Society for Creative Anachronism, Bike Polo and Oakland Capture the Flag, 4 Square of the East Bay is a loosely organized group of individuals who like to gather and have some old fashion, good, clean, FREE fun! All ages are welcome, all styles are encouraged...

4 Square is a game played with a bouncy rubber playground ball where one big square (16ft x 16 ft) is divided equally in to four sections (8ft x 8ft) and labeled A, B, C & D. The ball is served from the player in A square and when it bounces in a players square, they must physically return it to another player's square. Balls hit out of the big square or back into one's own square result in that player being out. Players enter in through D square and must work their way up to A square. Once in A square, the player serves the ball to any other square and can make up rules that suit them (ie. everyone must play with one hand OR you must spin after each hit OR as you hit the ball you must yell out a country of the world etc). Rules are meant to be fun and challenging, not to give anyone a particular advantage. That being said, there are some standing basic rules to our game...

Basic rules for 4 Square of the East Bay:
1) You can't get out on a serve (AKA no aces). It sucks to get out when you first get in.
2) If you hit the ball out, but two people play on the ball then the game keeps going like you were never out. If you hit the ball out and two people DON'T play on it (ie the person to hit it after you hits it out OR the second person stops play) YOU are the one who is out.
3) If a ball hits an outer line, the hit is IN and should be played on.
4) A Square has the final say in all rulings. They can call do-overs or duels and are generally right in all things. Unless the crowd boos them thus pressuring to change their ruling ;-)
5) If a ball bounces into someone's square, let them return it. Don't get in the way of a ball someone can hit or they'll call 'interference' on you either resulting in a do-over or a duel.
6) If you intercept the ball in the air before it hits the pavement in your square, that counts as hitting the ground. Put that ball directly in to someone else's square because if you hit it into your square, YOU'RE OUT.
7) If there is a conflict or dispute, this is usually solved by a DUEL which is a 2 Square battle between the arguing parties, set off by three good and fair hits before trying to get each other out.
8) DON'T BE A JERK! Instead, seek to be excellent. A certain level of competition is to be expected but you're not gonna make any friends by proving to everyone that you can slam a ball over their heads. Remember, it's a kid's game, so don't get bent out of shape. It's not a good look.
9) HAVE FUN! Be flexible and allow people to be themselves. Not everyone's style of play is going to look the same, so come through with an open mind and open heart and let the game flow...

If you haven't thought about what to this weekend, I still have a few
sailing excursions available. This is a great way to spend the day with
your friends and family. It'll be a great memory that you'll talk about for
a long time.

Sail on Temptation, a beautiful new modern 37 foot sailing yacht, in San
Francisco Bay, one of the most prestigious sailing venues in the world. A
picture's worth a thousand words. So take a look at the photos on this
flicker account. If you've previously been sailing on the boat, I have
updated all the pictures. So feel free to download them and distribute

Try a morning sail if you like nice calm water. You'll get to enjoy the
nature, see lots of birds, sea lions, maybe even dolphins. Bring your
breakfast and have brunch on the boat.

Afternoon sails are great if you want to experience the boat under the
full effect of the wind. It could be blowing up to 25 knots in the Bay.
When we approach the lee side of Angel Island, the wind is minimal and the
temperature is 20 degrees warmer. This is great for cocktail parties or
relaxing in the sun while your lunching.

In late afternoon and evening sailing, the wind diminishes. We'll sail
under the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy a spectacular sunset.

At nighttime,you'll get the gorgeous scenery of the city lights.

You can reserve the boat "Temptation" with the captain with your own
group up to six people for $125 per hour.
Two hours is great for sunset sailing ($250).
Four hours is perfect for a half-day sail all around the Bay ($500).

One Day Sailing Class Sunday August 2nd 9am to 4pm

I'm putting together a one day sailing class for Sunday, August 2nd
It'll start at 9am until 4pm. This one day sailing course is an
introduction to sailing. The course is designed to give you hands-on
experience. The class is conducted on a new modern 37 foot sailing yacht.

In the morning, you'll learn the parts of the boat, sailing theory, and
how everything works. Next, we'll rig the boat and sail to Angel Island
and lunch there.
Then, you'll get to drive the boat, tack and jibe, and practice sailing.
It's a lot of fun!

The cost is only $185 per person. The class size is limited to six
people. If you have your own group, call me and we'll set up a private
lesson.

As individuals or families enter Playland, you will spin the wheel of fortune and be assigned a set of adventures. Some areas are designed for young explorers who will be crawling through hidden fortresses, other puzzles will require deductive reasoning. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $10 for kids and seniors (55 and over), and general admission is $15. Admission includes free use of our 25+ pinball machines, penny arcades, historic movies (of Whitney's Playland and the Sutro Baths), live magic shows, carnival games where you can win teddy bears and other great prizes, all the dioramas and all exhibits. I would like to find someone to occasionally hit a tennis ball around with, preferably early on Saturday or Sunday mornings (from 8 or 9 AM). I have not played much recently but appear to be about a 3.0-level player (I can volley pretty easily and get some strength and spin into the ball). I would like someone of a similar level who may wish to play for a couple hours and even play some competitive games and sets.

I prefer to play at a park (the name escapes me) on Potrero and 25th Streets. The courts there are not great but, as a result, they're not used that often. This complex is the one connected to a large ball field, basketball court, and a small playground. (I don't really want to play where many others seem to--GG Park or Dolores Park--due to crowds and transportation issues.)

I'm male and 37 years old, and am open to anyone who's interested in the situation described. Thanks.

Ever wish you could perform magic? People love to see a great magician perform, and after a show they often wonder where they can learn how to become a magician. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach Museum of Fun is pleased to announce its very first Magic Workshop.
On Thursday, July 16th Playland-Not-at-the-Beach presents "Magic with Ordinary Objects" taught by master magician Heather Rogers. Rather than start with expensive apparatus, we think it is better to teach a new magician how to produce magical effects right at the dinner table or at a desk just by picking up common, ordinary objects. The emphasis then is on the magician not on the fancy equipment. The effects taught include linking and unlinking rubber bands, making coins appear out of mid-air, repidting which colors people will choose from a box of crayons, and many other easy to learn but astounding effects. This workshop is designed for anyone from 7 to 107 years old.

Heather Rogers is an award winning magician and motivator who has presented magical programs at over 3,500 public and private events ranging in all sizes and venues, including the Wonder Dome and House of Mirth in Las Vegas. As a trained actor, circus performer and trainer, and solo performing artist, Heather has also written and produced 7 one-woman shows that ran in many theaters in San Francisco including Venue 9�s Women�s Work Theatre Festival, The Shelton Theatre, The Marsh Theatre and many others. She has coached groups and individuals in sleight of hand magic and presented several trainings on �Magic for Marketers.�

The workshop begins at 6:00 PM and goes until 8:00 PM on July 16th. Students will be provided with all the necessary equipment to perform the magical effects. The cost is only $ 20 per student. After the workshop, guests are welcome to enjoy Playland-Not-at-the-Beach's attractions for an extra hour. Playland is located at 10979 San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito, CA. The Del Norte BART station is just 5 blocks away, and the ACTransit bus stops right across the street.

I've had a great six year run poker, we play one evening during the week and SATURDAY NIGHTS (cash game never a rake) at my place and we're always looking for more players. The game is no limit Texas hold �em, with one and two dollar blinds, most folks buy in for around $80.00 to $100.00 dollars. If you're looking for nice group of non-smoking, non-drinking,(at least not during the game) friendly poker playing folks, then send me a reply. Our player�s age range from the upper twenties to mid fifties and everywhere in-between. Now, a couple of things here, if you are the type of person that says things like hella and hecka, or what�s up dawg, then this might not be the right game for you. If you are also the type of person that screams and high fives everyone in the room and spills your beer when the raiders score, then please stay away. I should also mention that we are looking for people that can play on a regular basis hopefully NO LESS than a couple times a month and I would prefer people over the age of 23 (young kids tend to go all in constantly) and if you are coming over strictly to play cards and have no intentions of speaking to anyone please don't reply, you must have some kind of a personality, some people that show up are about as exciting as a parking meter. Great game for married couples and ladies, games begin between seven and seven thirty. We are located in the Emerald Hills, which is a little community located in the upper Redwood City hills, snacks and drinks are provided however you are welcome to bring whatever you like. The stick is used to pass a weighted puck from player to player across the bottom of the pool to score into the opposing team�s goal.

Because it�s non-contact and underwater, people of different sizes, ages and genders play on an equal field - it�s not about strength, it�s about teamwork and skill. It�s great cross-training for runners, swimmers and bikers, and because it�s a low-impact, �non-gravity� sport, it's a fun way to exercise that�s easy on your body. And, no matter what your skill level, Underwater Hockey is a great way to have lots of fun, get fit, and make new friends!

Yes, it really exists! Underwater Hockey is an organized sport with clubs playing in over 50 cities across the U.S. and in nearly 30 countries worldwide. There are local and national tournaments each year and even a world level competition � many Bay Area players have been part of gold-medal winning U.S. National teams in various World Championships. We�ve been playing here in the Bay Area for over 25 years and would love to introduce the sport to new players.

WHEN & WHERE: San Jose State University Aquatic Center, 8th Street just north of San Salvador, Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Sunday New Players League at 3:30 - see below).

Women Soccer Players Wanted for New Team (San Francisco)

We are looking for players for a new team we are forming in the Golden Gate Women�s Soccer League, 6th division http://www.ggwsl.org/ We want to create a team where people are committed to coming to each game, getting a good workout, and most importantly having fun. We welcome all ages and skill levels. Age range for members on our team range from mid 20�s to late 40�s. Some of us play on an indoor team while some of us are totally new to soccer and have never played on a team. With many beginner players we expect that we may not always win, if we have any wins at all this season. The only guarantee is that we will have fun and get a great workout.

We need seven to eight more players on the roster to make this team complete. Games are on Saturdays and are scheduled as early as 9 am or as late as 4 pm. Most games will be in San Francisco but depending on field availability, a few games may take place in the East Bay or North Bay. The season starts September 12th. Fees are $121 per season.

My objective is to build lifelong friendships through discussion of modern and classical literature. I would like to establish a book club with women of similar interests for several reasons:

1) read and discuss really great books with others
2) meet women of similar interests
3) have regular contact with them to support growth of close, lasting relationships

Book club details:
